I personally was the subject of a totally unrehearsed chant some years ago at Newcastle. As a photographer I was taking some shots of the newly installed pitch lighting for Phillips using my large plate camera on a sturdy tripod. Just before the match started I had positioned myself on the touchline beside the goal netting with red and black cape over my head in order to compose my image. I looked different from all the other press photographers with their Nikon and Canon cameras. Someone suddenly in the crowd a meters away shouted "Who do you think you are, David Bailey?". David Bailey was a very famous photographer and the subject of an Ad campaign. I emerged from under the cape and looked behind me and there was a small group pointing at me and chanting "David Bailey...David Bailey... David Bailey...". Within 20 secs virtually the entire stadium was pointing at me continuing the chant "David Bailey". Spontaneously I took of my cape and waved it around in a salute and took a deep bow at which point the stadium burst into applause. That was FUN.

You've chosen one of the cleaner chant videos there, Tyler - if you think there's a lot of cursing in those, you should listen to one about a player they don't like...! Some of the chants will have been made up by just one or two friends with loud voices - by using familiar tunes and making the lyrics funny or sweary, people remember them more easily and will likely join in on the way to the match. There is one video when one guy makes up verses as they go along! Many teams and supporters travel quite long distances by bus too - usually with copious amounts of beer - that's another place they are learned; and/or in the supporters' pubs. How well they sing depends largely upon how sober or otherwise they are - many people lose their inhibitions and so sing better and louder after they've had a few...

If you want to know how everyone knows the chants try listening again to one of the simpler ones and seeing if you can join in by the second or third repetition. Even the more complex ones are generally NOT that hard to learn - especially since they're often tied in to a famous song or tune - so you can easily pick them up hearing them in the stadium.

The problem is, that these are all based on British songs and you won't really understand them, because they're about players that have played in the English football leagues. Emiliano Sala was only 28, when he died in a plane crash over the English Channel. You really need to read about it, to understand that kettle of fish! Also you said about the swearing, but as the person above said, these chants are very mild!

Being a football fan in the Uk, or anywhere in Europe for that matter, is tribal.......being a football fan isnt what you DO, it's what you ARE, and for the genuine fans, you dont choose your football team, it chooses you, and once you're a fan, you're a fan for life........as the late great Bill Shankly once said, "football isnt a matter of life and death, it's far more important than that!" I've followed my team (Portsmouth) since 1958(a mere 65 years now) and my dad followed them from 1926 up until he passed away in 1992, and I had his ashes scattered on the pitch at Portsmouth's stadium........believe me, the chants at English football grounds can be brutal, they are always clever, or witty, they're always original, and they are passionate and LOUD! Oh, and they are often offensive, homophobic, sexist, cruel, vicious, and unrelenting........and funny, too!

Though the 'passion' does seem a bit more intense than in sports across the pond, I think the biggest reason our chants are so much better is that we have pissed up blokes with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport leading them, whereas you guys have high school girls trying to impress their boyfriends/parents leading yours...

Great Reaction Tyler. Even more impressive was that many of those chants were AWAY from Home like the more complicated one and The (Crystal) Palace ones,for example. The Sala chant was very poignant as he never got to play for Cardiff City but his plane crashed on his journey from France. The Number 1 chant is much longer and there are many solo clips of that one in honour of Dutch defender:Virgil Van Dyck. Fans sing on the way to and from the game.All thru' the game and stay behind to celebrate with the team who, often, do a celebratory lap of honour.

My brother-in-law used to start chants. He just used to repeat himself a couple of times then the people around him picked it up, then those around them and that's how it spreads. It helped that he had the loudest voice on the bloody planet😂 He was so good at it all the players, manager, etc at the club knew him. Sadly we lost him when he was 23 and the football club put up a plaque in his honour because of his bellowing chants.❤️

its repetition, 1 guy will start it, if its any good the duys around him will join in. keep repeating and eventually you have thousands joining in. then once it gets known just need someone to start it at future games and everyone will join in straight away. The chants are usually based on some well known melody that everyone will know and the words are usually pretty simple.

Football teams aren't usually something you just decide to follow one day. People grow up with a team. Often it is because you live in a family or a community where most people follow a particular team. You go to a local pub and it is full of supporters on match days. You have local rivals and sometimes cities are divided by the team you support which can also still, even now, be decided by your religion (though thankfully this is less relevant than it was). The best way to think about football supporters is that it is like belonging to a tribe.

At every football ground in the Uk there is one section of the stadium which is where the hard-core, most dedicated fans always gather, the home "end", where none but the brave will venture and it's the one part of the stadium that you will NEVER see a visiting fan........it's there where the majority of chants begin, it's there the chants and the noise are the loudest and the fiercest, and its there where the passion is at its highest.........

You should react to ultras our way of life 10,000 special it’s about all European football fans, all American reactions has been impressed but shocked. There are a lot of chants which are not PC in England and the fans will chant bad things at their own club and players and against the opposing fans. But there are also many chants which is like a song and everyone is in sync. Most chants are made on the spot it’s really clever and creative. Also there is so much rivalry between clubs and local derbies which can get really violent. There is the worst 17 English derbies video you could react to and it’s old and new footage as this goes back so many years. There is a top 10 most vile chants if you want to see what really gets said. The chants is part of the game and the fans are really passionate about their club it’s more of a religion. Over here we can say anything to the players except be racist. There is also a video USA v EUROPEAN Basketball fans there isn’t any swearing or fighting but you will see the huge difference. We are allowed to express ourselves at sporting events across Europe but in America it’s seems a bit stale and wooden and more about commercials but I have come to understand your not allowed to do what we can. These videos I’ve recommended will get you a lot of likes and followers as us Brits and Europeans appreciate other countries reacting to this. I am in my 7th decade of following and attending Millwall games and Millwall often used to have helpful advice to the visiting fans, so not all bad. There would be "It's A Long Way To The Station" to the tune of "It's A Long Way To Tipperary" which, thoughtfully advised opposing fans that they had better be fast on their feet in order to catch the trains going back home.. Obviously, there were more poignant, personal songs directed at the Officials like "Who's Your Father, Referee?" and, kindly, informing him that he might be unaware that he was born out of wedlock and he might want to make suitable inquiries....

I live about a mile or two away from my local team and you can hear them from my bedroom window. And the stadium can only hold about 6 or 7 thousand fans in it but you can hear most of the match. All football fans are that loud and passionate. It must be even louder at the top clubs. Plus it brings everyone together as a community there local football team. Especially if there on the TV and your watching in the pub. People bond over football it's a beautiful game. But the fans of football are more beautiful than the game. itself

Although Anfield is always THE place imo to hear YNWA on a regular basis, especially at north-west derby games and European nights, (although always sung well at Celtic and BvB Dortmund as well), the best I ever heard, at least out of 'live' Anfield, was the one at Australia's Melbourne Victory ground in July 3013 pre-season, that was just amazing - available on youtube. My personal general favourites are Fields of Anfield Road and Poor Scouser Tommy. Favourite's about (more recent) players are the ones for Bobby Firmino, Virg, Torres, Suarez and Gini Wijnaldum. 'So many to choose from, so little time to hear them' 😄

Being British hardly means you're going to automatically support LFC though. Whoever they were, it was a great crowd enjoying the marvellous atmosphere there.

Never found anywhere as good as the atmosphere in an English footy stadium or the pubs on matchday. I was walking home one night when England were playing, annoyed I was late home to watch the game. As I walked along the streets, could hear pubs in the distance, during my journey I heard 2 cheers and 1 bout of shouting..... I knew what the score was!

In Newcastle where I'm from the stadium (St James Park, Newcastle United) is in the City Centre practically and you can hear the chants and the roar when the wind is in the right direction. No1 is at the stadium, underneath the stands are bars, food outlets, toilets etc. Supporters gather before, during half time and after the game in the stadium bars. Yes, you can hear the chants throughout the stadium and during the game, rival supporters try to drown each other out.

I live maybe a 1/4 mile from the local football stadium. When the chanting gets going it's enough to give you goosebumps - something very powerful about thousands of people shouting the same somg like that, and when someone scores a goal... dang! Without wanting to venture too far out onto the limb... it's more or less the same feeling people must get when singing hymns in church, but magnified a hundred times. It's enough to bring you to tears... and I HATE football...

1:24 well, we usually save them for match day. But they aren't always in the ground, if there's enough people gathered on the way to or from the game they might start something up then. At the ground itself, chanting can happen at any point from when the ground starts to fill up until a bit after the final whistle. This particular one is set to The Lion Sleeps Tonight which was a pop song from the early 80's. It's in praise of one of their players.

The second one is newcastle utd fans, sunderland fc is there main rivals because they are pretty much neighbours when the tyne derby is on match day is insane you can here the chants all over newcastle city center the fans can get quite hostile with eachother but if there is a wider issue or cause they will absolutely come together as one

The Lion Sleeps tonight is an old pop song from the 60s. Not a song from a bloody Disney movie but okay. I heard in the radio in the 70's a lot in Denmark. A lot of artists has covered it by now. But Netflix has a film about the family who wrote the song trying to get the rights back ad they never got payed. Looks interesting.

On the number 6 chant/ It's about Crystal Palace . We normally sing it after we score and the chant is shortened to "The Palace" Great support like other Premier league teams.

British football chants take well known melodies (The Sunderland one was to the tune of 'He's Got the Whole World in His Hands') and get creative either singing the praises of their own team's players, or criticising the opposition players. The taunts are not always football related - if there's been some story in the news about a player's private life, that becomes a chant by next Saturday! The one about a stolen taxi is obviously exactly what I mean- they've heard about something that is alleged to have happened, and turned it into a chant! "The Palace" is a London team called 'Crystal Palace', which is an area of South London, named after the Great Exhibition of 1851, which was held in a huge glass house in that area.

Regarding number 4, there were four players from a club called West Bromwich (pronounced Brom-itch) Albion who stole a taxi whilst in Barcelona, could be something to do with that. Regarding song number 2, there was a 28 year old Argentinian footballer called Emiliano Sala, who was on a small plane flying from Nice in France to Cardiff in Wales to complete transfer paperwork. Unfortunately, there was a faulty exhaust on the plane, which caused carbon monoxide to leak into the cabin; the plane crashed in the English Channel, near the Island of Guernsey. Both the pilot and passenger died.

You should check out the English vs American chants it is pretty funny. A lot of chants are based in rivalry taking the mick out of your opponents etc. Also not sure I would call these the top 10 defo more family friendly than some you may hear though lol

Every club has one or two main chants. For my club we sing about a night out in the town and how the football club is brilliant. There are more generic chants which fans know. People come up with new chants it gets spread around the fans on social media

While "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was in The Lion King movie, it was a popular song years before that and wasn't written for the film... But yeah, it was featured in that film though. Many sports chants are often slightly altered popular songs.

You can not only hear it all over the stadium; you can hear it all through a town. I'm ten minutes' walk away from a football ground, and it can be noisy enough to hinder conversation when there's a big match. I lived more than a mile and a half away from one stadium in a larger city, and the noise could still be heard quite clearly. Grandma would never have approved of the words being used.

At The Arsenal there is an old cinema o the Holloway road( old times the gunners). You stand up, on the 🎤. The crowd makes it clear if they chant it or not at the game. When they chant your tune there's no better feeling. 65000 people singing your song

You can hear the noise the fans produce miles and miles outisde the stadium at times. So yea it's loud. That's why home games the fans can act as a 12th man in a sense. Also the English chants can be hard to grasp alot of inside jokes and so on. Great cintent keep it up.

Just to add, some chants are spontaneous that happen in the middle of a match. Whether it's picking on a person that resembles a famous or infamous person like the former PM Boris Johnson Some chants are picked up from recent events about the opposition team. For instance, I have no doubt from now till the end of the season opposition fans will be making fun of Manchester United's loss to rival Liverpool 7-0. It was an utter shambolic performance... and I can guarantee that there will be a song about it 😆 To answer your question. Often a new song is introduced by a few ppl in the pub prior or traveling down in a bus or train. IF it's catchy enough it gets picked up organically as the singing it just gets bigger and bigger so by the time you get to the ground it's ready to be rolled out 😆
