If you wanna see a guy that drives you crazy with his Denglish, it is Papaplatte. He is one of the biggest German Twitch streamers (and KZbinr) and every seconnd of his words is basically Denglish.

As a German who studies English, reads most books in English and watches most videos in English, I can confirm that it's actually not that hard to slip into the Denglish head space. You don't even have to try hard or talk like that on purpose to sound cool. One day you just realize that you think in English, talk to yourself in English, and can't find the German words anymore because everything in your head IS ENGLISH. On the bright side, my English has greatly improved over the last. years

Same, I've been consuming media almost exclusively in English for 25 years. I definitely have english thoughts and curse in English. But the best thing is that I don't have to translate into German to understand because I already know two words for the same thing. But yeah, sometimes it's hard to remember the german word.

Being proud of "de-learning" your mother tongue. THAT is the point of the critique. Nobody has a problem with multilingual people, but with people so ignorant of their surrounding, ignorant of the people they are around, that they just don't realize how they talk. If it were plain English. But it is a mixture to the worse of both languages. And this people are really proud of their "transformation" into a language raping monster?

You have to know that 'FUNK' is not a random little youtube chanel. It's a youth format from the public service TV Stations of ARD and ZDF where everyone has to pay TV fees monthly for. Just keep that in mind. ;)

I think Denglisch is terrible. I have the feeling that we Germans in particular overdo it. It doesn't feel as extreme in other European languages. I try to be careful not to use English words, but sometimes it happens to me as well. You're bombarded with it from all sides, especially from advertising. English is a nice language, relatively easy to learn, but you should speak either German or English but not both at the same time.
@HalfEye794 ай бұрын
True. Nobody says "Rechner" or "runterladen". It is just "Computer" or "downloaden". Especially it is terrible, when somebody wants to use an english word with german grammar. I.E. "Ich habe da mal etwas designt."
@Blaise22114 ай бұрын
I think that Denglisch isn't a problem in itself. You only have to adapt your language to the situation you are in. When I'm with my friends who understand English pretty well, I use more English words. When I'm with my nearly 70-year-old mother, I don't use many. But I think it's a lost cause to try to "defend" a language, because languages are always changing. In German, we have many words that were first borrowed from Latin or Greek, then from French, and now it's English. And there are more than you think: "Vater" is German, "Papa" is French. "Oheim" is German and "Onkel" is also French. There are words from India, Hungary, Arabic, and so on. Of course, it's now happening faster because of globalization, and older generations that didn't learn English in school might feel left behind. But in the end, you are never too old to learn a new language, and even if you can't speak it, learning to understand it is much easier.

I really really dislike the denglish, but even I slip into it when the topic is gaming or pc, since some words are so integrated into this specific culture. and the worst thing is, since I start to consume more english content, I sometimes forget the damn german word. but I can't stand streamer or yt'ber with an exessive use of denglish (because most of them do not even know what these words even mean)

It is one thing to use an English word now and then. especially with technical topics. But when you call your Kaffee coffee and Hausaufgaben Homework. Especially as a grown up, it is embarrassing. The most comical is when people try to compensate their German accent with a fake American accent.

I feel like using English words can be very beneficial. Especially if they convey some meaning that the German equivalent doesn’t. For example the word “cringe”. I think the nearest translation would be “unangenehm” (uncomfortable) or something like that but there is no German adjective that encompasses the exact same feeling or meaning. Therefore, I will always use that word instead of a German one! BUT on the other hand I get very annoyed with Denglish as soon as it is basically unnecessary. The word I hear most often at the moment is “literally” and I don’t understand why. We have several German words and even phrases that can be used instead of “literally” - buchstäblich, förmlich, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. In my opinion we should use foreign words to expand our language but we should also cherish the German language. I feel like especially younger people aren’t even aware anymore of how „rich“ the German language can be.

@red_dolphin4684 ай бұрын
yes please !!!!!!! that will "portray" you the fact why we German people see us as subcultural and dialectic variety is gigantic, there are more than 400 dialecs registered, each use different pronunciation, words, and way of saying things. varies so much often, to give you a Idea for me its easier to understand so called Middle English from medival ages than todays normal or modern english because pronunciationwise my dialect and Middle English are closer together.

I speak like that sometimes with friends who are also bilingual, makes is far easier to communicate since you never have to search for missing words, just say them in the language you remember them in. Pretty sure all bilinguals of the same "type" tend to do that
@hw25084 ай бұрын
Wait, "search for missing words"? Have you not learned the vocabulary of your mother tongue or do you start to forget the vocabulary? Do you think it is positive to forget knowledge you already had, especially such basic knowledge like a language? With the use of Denglish it won't get better and at some point you might not be able to express yourself correctly in any language.
@fenrisulfr84 ай бұрын
It's not that you completely forget the vocabulary, it's just that some words in a specific language come to mind quicker and translating them would also get rid of some of the connotations you might want to express. That doesn't mean we are incapable of strictly using only one language (except if the topic is IT lol)

Leider ist das keine Satire mehr. Die deutsche Sprache wird mehr und mehr durch denglisch ersetzt.😥 Junge Leute finden es kind a cool so zu talken. Ist halt kürzer und teilweise einfacher als es in deutsch zu sagen oder es wird in Abkürzungen gesprochen. In Betrieben die etwas größer sind hält diese Meetingskultursprache, genau wie im Video zu sehen, immer mehr einzug. 🙄 Funny couse it's true 😂 and so sad!
