I think one of the reasons why American fire appliances are so expensive is that they are custom built from scratch, European fire trucks start out as a basic stock truck chassis and have firefighting bodywork and equipment built onto it, which is likely cheaper and probably easier for maintenance as the parts for engines, brakes, suspension, etc are all standard from the manufacturer like the one in this playlist could have part ordered directly from Volvo, in fact this could be worth a reaction kzbin.info/aero/PLtatVP5K0pwoHENYFYBfn9n-x3Eamehss

If a fire department wants to get rid of a bike lane, which is for safety, because the fire trucks can’t get through, maybe the unnecessarily big fire trucks are the problem, not the bicycle lane🧐

My dad is a retired firefighter in Norway, out firetrucks are a lot smaller, but our buildings are also shorter, so the uses are different... which is why our firestation has a Unimog ready for forest fires, to go out in the terrain to fight fires. But a lot of other tasks are done by the firefighters, like.. there is a truck for salvaging things after a fire, there's smaller pick-up trucks for errands and such, like one I got to join my dad at as a kid was basically security, checking the perimeter of the local garbage dump, both for fires as gases are formed by trash, but also to make sure there aren't people with guns trying to shoot seagulls, as they're drawn to the trash as well, so I've gotten to drive smaller fire "trucks" like VW Transporter T3, Mitsubishi L200, Mitsubishi Pajero, and oddly enough a Ford Explorer, which all were used by the local fire department, actually they had two of the T3 Transporter pick-ups, both of them diesel, one NA and one Turbo, the NA one was so slow it barely got up hills... They also have duties like putting up all the city's flags for holidays and celebrations, and they have to be guards at events in case of fires, like there is a local award show for Norwegian movies and actors/actresses, dad often had overtime standing guard at those shows. Also... demolition, you could hire the fire department to tear down wood houses... as in they'd use it for training and burn it down in a controlled manner, training up putting out fires, and also to be more efficient in "smoke diving" where they basically went in blind and then had to draw a map of how they think the house layout was afterwards, there was one guy in my dad's team who basically had photographic memory and almost could draw up blueprints with measurements after going blind in a smoke filled house. They also train car mechanics, as part of the car mechanics 101 classes, it's mandatory to learn how to put out car fires, as a teenager I crashed my first car, my dad took it to work, and a friend of mine who was taking that education ended up in my dad's class, and it got a bit surreal for him as he got my dad telling him how to set my car on fire, to then put it back out. :P Sorry that got long kinda randomly... ADHD things.

T3 pickups, nice! Those are SUPER rare now, especially here in UK. The only one I "sometimes" see is army-ish green and is actually a Syncro 4x4 one as well so the rarity of that must be epic! With the engine at the back those things are already pretty damned capable of traction in bad conditions, the 4x4 version must be a seriously capable off-roader!

The T3 Diesel was probably the 1.7L 54hp version. Here in Germany we call cars this slow "Wanderdüne" = shifting dune. A friend of mine owned one - former road construction vehicle. Orange body "Doka" - Doppelkabiner = Double-Cab pick-up with a small gray tent on top. Back then, they were used all over - everybody knew them. They are fun to drive - albeit slow, of cause. The gearstick is so long it seems to reach from here to China. Luckily, it is only 4-speed. My friend had the RWD version - 4WD is even slower I presume. To this day, the T3 has many fans - and you can mount almost any big car engine in them - the stock engines are their biggest weak point. VR6,V6,V8 - you name it. Even Ford engines fit inside. Too bad my friend sold his before we could go crazy with it.

very interesting topic, but the video sparked lots of comments for being poorly made and researched. Some aspects I want to add: 1) while fire apparatus in the US are often way longer than their European counterparts, the European ones are often quite a bit taller. 2) there are a few American apparatus used across Europe: van and pickup based units were somewhat popular in the past, but aren't any more today. actual full size fire trucks exist as well, but only very few of them. Even the US Army Fire & Emergency Services at USAG bases in Germany stopped shipping American apparatus across the pond and use European ones instead 3) American apparatus manufacturers tried to enter the European market multiple times - trying so with the American layout. They never were successfull as they simply didn't adapt to the entirely different market. At the same time, e.g. the European manufacturer Rosenbauer entered the American market with an American fire apparatus layout and is successful with that approach 4) while the Aerials in the US are usually based on a way larger chassis, also due to carrying more equipment, the ladder itself usually isn't taller than on European apparatus. In fact, barely any Aerial in the US is beyond 100 ft tall, while even ones in the 150 ft to 170 ft are kind of common across Europe and the tallest ones being in service hitting 300 ft of height - based on a truck chassis which isn't much larger than a Tiller Ladder which reaches only 100 ft in the US. 5) departments are layed out VERY different. Taking Germany for example, the departments in the cities usually have few large (sometimes enormous!) stations, whereas the American departments have numerous tiny stations. The response times aren't much different, but the entire approach and department layout sure is. 6) The share of volunteer firefighters in the US is at 70%, in Germany it's at 96%. 7) There are only 110 career fire departments in Germany, compared to more than 22,000 volunteer departments; Pretty much every tiny village has its own little station of 1 to 3 apparatus, even if the next village and station is only 3 minutes down the road

As someone who works in german civil engineering I'd like to add that we try to avoid planing buildings that require the use of hydraulic ladders in case of a fire. The large DLKs are a pain when you try to layout parkingspaces, streetcurves, trees, attackroutes and so on. It's usually way easier to just go for extra staircases in order to make sure the higher floors don't get cut off, and the compact HLFs are just ridiciously undemanding when it comes to street requirements.

3:03 is a gyrocopter... The powered props is located on the front and provides forward propulsion. The bigger props that make it looks like a helicopter, is free rolling, and it moves with the power of the wind when the gyrocopter moves forward, and thanks to this rotation, it provides lifting power, and make the gyrocopter to fly. The pro is that it requires a short take-off run instead of a conventional airplane, but you don't have the VTOL properties of a conventional helicopter. P.s. I said VTOL to indicate helicopters as well, because they're technically categorized in the same group of flying vehicles like the F-35, Arier and Hospray, which are named Vertical TakeOff and Landing vehicles (V.T.O.L.)

In Sweden we often have a small vehicle that can come through traffic quicker than the trucks as first emergency responder. It's usually some type of MPV with some basic equipment. They are usually called "befälsbil" which roughly means officers car, that's were the boss goes and a paramedic I think. The idea is to come to the object faster than the fire trucks, make an assessment on what types of vehicles is further needed besides the base truck that of course already is on its way, both leave at the same time. It's a very quick and effective method, the first person on sight will make a judgement of how acute and critical the situation is. We have degrees of that here. If it's a situation that's not life threatening, no lights or sirens. If it's more severe, sirens and lights in areas with traffic and only lights where there's no traffic. If it's really severe with human lives in danger it's lights and sirens all the way. A sort of don't cry wolf method. I'm not a firefighter myself but my daughter have some experience so don't take this as 100% correct, it's as I have understood it.

Around 1673, Dutch painter, inventor, and printmaker, Jan van der Heyden and his son produced what they referred to as “ fire hose”. Interestingly, they sewed leather tubes together in 50 foot lengths, which is still considered a standard length to this day. This allowed fire fighters to get closer to the fire, which enabled them to aim and shoot the stream precisely where they wanted it. Jan van der Heyden also wrote the first firefighting manual: Brandspuiten-boek.

These Firetrucks from France ars part of a specialized unit for bush fires. They consist of 4 Trucks and one Command Car. I'm from Germany and a Volunteer Firefighter for almost 20 years, I'm also one of the Engineers for our Engine. I think one of the reasons why Fire Trucks in the US are bigger ist because they all carry water, and more compared to European Fire Trucks, because there are more fire hydrants in European Cities compared to the US. For example Most Ladders here in Europe came without a water tank and a pump, they are typical crewed by three Firfighters, but they have the same hight as American Ladders. Another point is, American Fire Trucks have their Pump almost always in the middle of the vehicle, and you can operate them from the left or right side. In Europe they are mounted for the Most time in the rear compartment of the vehicle, we also didn't attach every hose directly to the pump, we have one or two attachments for a 3" hose on both sides of our Engine, then we use a distributor to attach our other hoses. Another difference is our system to load our vehicles, in US Fire Trucks you often see these big doors for the compartments, and the manufacturer leave it to the Fire Departments to load their vehicle as they want, and you often can see there is a lot of wasted room. European manufacturer talk with their customers, and they tell them we're they want each Item in their Truck. Because we have more hydrants we also didn't need that much hoses, for example the highest distance in builded areas is 140m. If we need more hoses, we have specialized Trucks that carry 2000 metres of 3" hoses, we use them for bush fires or bigger structural fires.

Fire trucks are always evolving, changing to fit new requirements and needs. Part of the reason US fire trucks have grown to their current size is they are not just a fire truck, but they are an all around emergency responder vehicle, and they are equipped to be flexible enough to respond to any type of first responders needs. It’s one truck does all tasks as needed, so they don’t have to sort through an inventory of vehicles and try to pick the right truck for the job. Or show up at a site and find you do not have a needed piece of equipment because it’s on a different truck. I personally think that most fire truck we use are maybe a bit to large for a number of areas they operate in. And over time as equipment is rotated out of service and replaced with new equipment, the new equipment is resized for the current or predicted environment.

I'm a German firefighter. Yes, we have smaller firetrucks. But our trucks are also packed top the last bit, with all sorts of equipment. We also have a lot of engines, where the primary purpose is, to fight fires. Reason is, if you have a big fire, you need those. But as they are multipurpose, we also use them for all sorts of accidents, flooding, ... I think the size is also a matter, of how it is manufactured. for the fire trucks we use modern materials, like aluminum, carbon firbes, ... to get them smaller, lighter, and can pack a lot of material in them. I think our water tanks, are smaller (in average). We rely a lot on reinforcement from other fire departments and on hydrant water. The ladder trucks are more technically advanced, and are so smaller, but also reach approx 100 ft.

In the UK it's not just the fire service, it's known as the fire and rescue service because they don't only respond to fires. My dad was a fireman and, as well as fires, they responded to other emergencies. One time, they even had to rescue some cows that had become stuck and sinking in mud.

In 2010, firefighters from across the UK and European Union held an urban search and rescue exercise near Portsmouth. Exercise Orion simulated rescuing survivors from buildings and bridges which had collapsed during an earthquake. In the UK Volunteer firefighters are now rare, though some stations are run by volunteers in certain rural areas, such as Scotland and North Yorkshire. There are two small fire services that are run entirely by volunteers - the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade[46] and the Borth Voluntary Fire Unit (near Aberystwyth, Wales).[47] These are contracted to provide services for a regular fire service. I am a volunteer fire fighter in my home town, here in sLOVEnia, and I would like to show you a short video about the recent arrival into our truck pool. Its a first of its kind in my country, and its a TATRA FORCE T-815-7 6x6! In Europe we have a different kind of fire truck equipment, trucks have a designated role. You got your trucks to fight fire that have around 3000 liters (800 gallons) of water and all the equipment that a firefighter needs to fight a fire, you have trucks that are full of equipment for car accident rescues and so on! And then you have trucks that are basiclly used to transport water! These trucks have some basic firefighting equipment, but their soul purpose is to transport water. And these trucks get big! How big you ask? Well our TATRA can carry a bit more than 10.000 liters of water, that is around 2.700 gallons. Pump installed in this truck has a power of 3000L per minute, around 800 gallons at max rev, but we never use it at the max power. So when we have a big forest fire or lets say a big house fire, the soul purpose of TATRA is to suplly water to other trucks. Here is a short video about our TATRA! Hope you enjoy it. Best wishes from sLOVEnia and keep up the good video work kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXKblmWuj6d6aNE

Where i live in south of Europe residential fires are less than 1% of firefighters interventions. Bulk of maybe 80% of work are forest fires, that is why we invest mainly in Canadairs, Airtractors and Unimogs. Second main intervention couse is rescue of traffic casualites and third is clearing urgent situations after storms, fallen trees, pumping out flooded basements... We have fire fighting ladder that goes up 60m, but they use it only on drills.

My local department has 2 ambulances, one ladder, 2 pumpers, and a rescue truck. For a small lil' railroad town in Ohio we lack a tanker, HAZMAT, & a few other apparatus that the big cities use. They replaced one of the pumpers for a new Peirce engine a year or two ago. Within the last year the department had 3 fires within city limits (2 apartment fires, one house fire), and responded to a variety of calls for other departments ( a dozen villages and 2 other towns). In total we have a total of at least 25 pumpers, 5 or 6 ladders, 4 tankers, 4 command vehicles, one water rescue trailer (you read that right) 2 or 3 rescue trucks, and a bakers dozen ambulances (excluding regional airwing, and ambulances assigned to local hospitals). As such given how big the local agricultural, industrial operations get, and the hundreds of square miles of open farmland, or woodland, the local departments need to be large, mainly for the tools, & water needed. Even though we're farm country, we BARELY have water sources large enough to supply said water unless it's the lake, or the various water towers in the population centers. If anyone wants to guess the county, first hint is the lake in Northwest Ohio that's elongated east & west. It's freshwater & south of Lake Erie. Second hint is it's along the I-75 corridor. Third hint: Apollo 11's commander was born in largest population center in the middle of the county. For tornado siren fans, one of the towns in this county is known for it's odd sounding Thunderbolt 1003 siren.

Fellow Ohioan here, I may be able to answer why your town doesnt have a Hazmat truck. Your county may have Hazmat crews stationed all around it that respond to everywhere in your county and possibly to adjacent counties, I can speak for Akron and Summit County, we have Hazmat trucks stationed at various fire stations in cities around the county, even Akron uses the county Hazmat system and houses a truck there. I know Medina County and Portage County have their own Hazmat teams, Cleveland has its own Hazmat team but I do know of regional Hazmat teams dotted around Cuyahoga County. These hazmat teams could be either fire department controlled or controlled by county emergency management respectively, when I say controlled, I mean funded, they would most likely be controlled by fire department on scene.

European trucks are regulated to a maximum wide of 2.5m so they are all the same at the wide, I don't know if some countries has there own regulations but the manufacturers only built trucks for the public traffic with a maximum wide of those 2.5m. Length and height can change, even the maximum weight of a truck. In germany you are regulated for a semi "Sattelzug" to 4m height and 16.5m length, special versions called "Gliederzug" can be 18.75m. Germany also uses "Lang LKW", which can be translated to "long truck", they can have a maximum length in this combination of 25.25m. The maximum weight in germany for normal trucks is limited to 40t, in oversea container transport, your maximum weight can be up to 44t but you have to be in a circle of 150km around the terminal. If I'm right, in Sweden the trucks got a maximum height of 4.5m and have a maximum weight in special combinations up to 60t, correct me if I'm wrong. Have a nice day buddy 🙋🏼‍♂️

The thing I don't understand is, why hase the US fire department so many hose couplings, the standard US fire hose coupling, big traded ones for suction lines, storz for hydrants and cammlock, here in Germany we just use storz. Storz-A(round about 4 inches) for suction lines, STORZ-B(3 inch) for hydrants and the line to the distributer, and B and C(2 inch) for the nozzles and submersible pump. in bigger fire departments especially on airports they use storz-F it's just massive. We have effectively only 2 adapters on our truck(just a small volunteer fire department), storz A to B to conect the hose from the hydrant to the pump. And storz B to C to conect a C hose to the 3. Output of the distributer, and a manifold to conect 2 independent B lines to the pump In case only one hydrant couldn't keep up

In Germany we rely heavily on voluntery fire departments in rural areas which often only have a rather limited budget. So those departments often have just one or two vehicles, including a ladder engine. But larger departments in cities have a large variety. While in the US tehy deploy one engine taht has everything stacked (plus maybe an amulance), in Germany they deploy multiple vehicles where necesary. So the heavy duty ladder engine, the most expensive, slowest, worst maneuverable and least fuel efficient vehicle is not deployed for every incident. Also, often ambulances are not operated by fire depts (though this does happen), so way less medical equipment is transported around. On a side note: paramedics have way less authority here. But there are emergency doctors on duty. As not every call needs a doctor, they mainly have their own vehicles, often just normal estate cars (for storage) but fitted with the appropriate colours and blue light/sirens. That gives the doctors more flexibility to get around. It's just a different philosophy and overall a different situation here.

Btw, I think the weird airplane that looks like an helicopter is called autogiro (in Spanish, at least). But just talking out of memory.
@BrokenCurtain
@BrokenCurtain Жыл бұрын
Autogyros can't hover, but they're STOL-capable (short take-off & landing), meaning they can use basically any short patch of grass as an airfield. They're pretty popular among Australian farmers, who use them as bush planes. And the rotors aren't powered, they spin because of the vehicle's forward movement, that's why they can be landed safely even if the engine fails: you just take a dive to spin them up, thus creating enough lift to bring you down without crashing.

Thing is, not to replace all of the huge trucks with small ones. As in Singapore, of the three huge trucks two were replaced with smaller ones but the third one with one of comparable size. Most cases the two smaller fire trucks can handle the task as well as a larger one (and there will be quite a number of further cases, where two small ones do perform as good as one large one). But then, there still might be cases where you need the big one, that's why there sill is one of 'em around (and I think some more that haven't been replaced yet).

They answered their own question in the video regarding why they are bigger. She listed everything that's on them and the capacities. It is not a 1 for 1 comparison if you are comparing one of their smaller rigs to the US pumper / tanker / rescue rigs. And then you see the supposedly "too" wide ladder truck spreading its stabilizers even wider to properly support the ladder on the truck. Most US fire departments have other smaller vehicles for other purposes. Also, in my township, where there are zero fire hydrants, I want them to have the biggest, strongest, well equipped pumper and the biggest tanker on hand. We're relying on the tanks on both trucks to at least begin putting the fire out, and then be able to have enough hose and pumping power to get water from a nearby creek or the reservoir.

In my hometown, we have a volunteer fire department and certification is handled at a specialized facility at the county college. Our local departments are often called on to set up the flow of water when a city department cannot use a hydrant. We have a ladder truck, pumper trucks, and brush trucks. When you might not have a local water supply, you want as much water as your pumper truck can haul. Even then, they fit into the same dimensions as other CDL trucks from buses to RVs to 18-wheelers. The variety of trucks reflects the variety of tasks. A ladder truck will have power tools, ropes, harnesses, hand tools, hoses, a collapsible portable pool, a heavy-duty pump, and a moderate tank. Pumper trucks have multiple pumps, hoses, connection valves, chemicals for fires that cannot be quenched by water, hand tools, and more. The size of the trucks is needed for traffic control for blocking interstate on-ramps and exits.

The helicopter thing is a Gyrocopter. The engine only powers the front drive prop, the upper blades are turned by air pressure (autorotation) and generate lift. They predate helicopters by a couple decades being a much simpler design. Think of it as a plane that has rotating wings. They can fly at extremely slow speeds without stalling or falling and don't need long runways, but they aren't able to truly hover.

For me as an European visiting the US a few times, it’s always crazy when a big fire truck comes along for a small medical emergency.
@lynx9373

The reason this happens in many areas is that it allows for extra manpower or first response. It's not always economical or safe to have specialized units just for assisting ambulances on medical calls.

It’s also for if they get called to a fire after they’ve paged to a medical. That way they don’t have to drive back to the hall and change trucks.

In Germany, a distinction must be made between volunteers and professional fire brigades.While rural areas are covered by volunteer fire brigades, the more specially equipped and trained professional fire brigades can be found mainly in larger cities.Depending on the purpose, however, they complement each other or hand over the deployment to the respective other fire brigade.I am absolutely sure that German professional fire brigades can easily keep up with their American colleagues due to the technical nature of the vehicles.One of the emergency vehicles of the German fire brigades, for example, is your beloved UNIMOG.The professional fire brigades also have large mobile medical trucks, in which several seriously injured people can be medically treated and surgical procedures can be carried out.Without exaggeration one can say that German professional fire brigades have the perfect emergency vehicle for every special purpose.If necessary, units of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief with their heavy equipment are also called in.These units are so well equipped that they are used all over the world in disasters.

The difference in qualification and equipment between volunteers and professionals in Germany is smaller than you think. You have to keep in mind that there are only 112 professional fire departments in Germany - compared to 22000 volunteer fire brigades. Of course the guys in rural areas with only one Iveco Daily-based TSF-W operate on a different level than the vunteer firefighters of a 60.000 inhabitants city with some industry, a highway & railroads and a river nearby. These volunteers might have around 10-15 fire trucks, a boat & firefighters with extra qualification like diving, height-rescue, dealing with chemical threats and so on...

Can I suggest that you check out the Airlander airship. The world's biggest aircraft, being developed in Cardington Bedfordshire UK. We live close to the hangers and would often go and watch the test flights. Its an incredible aircraft.

There are modern Autogyros the most famous is James bonds little Nellie most fires I attended were small house fire mainly in a kitchen ie chip pan fires or bedroom fire coursed by inquisitive children play with matches or drunks falling asleep while smoking. Now in the UK most homes are of brick construction so the spread of fire is not as fast as the US where wood built buildings are more common. So the type of fire fighting equipment used for me was what is called a first aid hose like you would find on a buildings fire hose like in officers and hotels and schools .but longer the second most important is the water pump small but high output this make first response vehicals made smaller like a long bed pick up truck these can get to a site quicker and even with the small water tank can handle most house fires also you can hook up to the fire mains and use a standard fire hose until if needed a main fire pump shows up

In the Netherlands nowadays, most of the Ladder Trucks have been replaced by long reach ystems with a "basket" at the end, for 2 or 3 Firefighters and a Waterspoud. Also Firetrucks have standard Water on board, so upon a fire scene, they start hosing within 2 or less minutes. Later on, a Watertanker comes up, and feed the Engine with extra Water. www.youtube.com/@BrandweerLunteren Look at their Vlogs, and they are Volonteers !! Good luck, and keep up the Vlogs

So the main reason why the European and Asia firefighter have smal vehicles then the américain. first they modern their fleet with new vehicles and also they preferred specified their vehicles to responde to certain call when the usa have universal vehicles ,witch can helpful in some situations like in major disaster ,but ridiculous in some other situations. I living in France 🇫🇷 and firefighter work more in specification. We have for exemple vehicles responde for car accident other for fire or we have some unit like the video in 5:50 i think Oriented to forest emergency In the video we see 3 type of véhicule: The 4x4 is a commande car basically. The smal van is actualy a tactical véhicule ,they have diferentes tools like chainsaw or wire and other. And the last, the all terrain véhicule with the white barrier going around the vehicles , is a forest responde. vehicle is smal and get go in all terrain and we basically seeing im during the summer for fire forest. By the white bars going around the vehicle is actually a water wall to protect from the fire. So to resumat: the type of vehicles use by a country going to depend how you going to fight fire And that also doesn't mean European and Asian firefighter don't have large vehicles In France we have the mobile fire HQ use guring crisis In a lot of airport we use vehicles oriented for plane And in some country like in Switzerland you can have a firefighting train.

As a firefighter I can say that the original video is coming from someone with absolutely 0 knowledge of the fire service, so take what they said with a grain of salt. The reason for the bigger trucks is to simply carry more equipment. For example, the average American Ladder Truck carries several times the amount of equipment than it's European counterpart, for a multitude of specialized situations like technical rescue, rope rescue, high angle rescue, vehicle extrication, and more. Additionally there is a safety aspect, fire trucks are hit on highways far to frequently. So having a bigger truck helps protect the responders on a scene, some fire depts even have dedicated "blockers" that are old engines weighed down with sand in the tank and with much more emergency lighting. I can also point out the fact that the vast majority of the US has wide open roads, it is a very small minority of places with tight small roads. Finally, even though in the video they said fire calls make up around 4% of all calls, that doesn't include alarms where there is a possibility of a fire or other calls where the large amount of equipment on the truck is put to use, like a vehicle extrication or technical rescue. But it is true that the vast majority of calls are EMS related for most fire depts.

some departments in Germany make the same stupid move and use their Tower Ladder as blocker on highway scenes; Luckily some states use seperate traffic safety trailers to warn and direct traffic better than the Tower Ladders could ever do. As for the equipment: in Germany stuff for vehicle extrication, technical assistance and alike is carried by the Engines, while the Tower Ladders carry only the bare minimum of equipment to allow better maneuverability by having a more compact truck. Sweden has the very same road layout like the US, still they don't have any larger emergency vehicles in service
