I drive a Porsche 911 and live in Germany, and I don't pass people with a large delta speed, ever, it is just too dangerous. I have been up to 250 km/h (155 mph), but only twice in five years, and only when the conditions are warm and dry, and there is a clear, straight stretch and no visible dangers or obstructions. The unlimited Autobahn is only really possible in Germany, since German drivers are generally competent and considerate, with very few exceptions. I'm Dutch and have driven a lot on the Autobahn in my life. Never felt unsafe. The trouble with safety mostly isn't the speed, but the behavior of the drivers. It's not so hard to kill someone at lower speeds, 50km/h can be enough. With the cars becoming heavier these days (including the electric ones), safety doesn't improve, and it might very well be declining. By the way, I don't think this video had much footage of accidents on the German Autobahn, as he almost only used footage of other countries.

130km/h for the "Richtgeschwindigkeit" (recommended speed) is not random. This speed is considered near optimal for maximizing the number of cars that can pass through a section of road (measured as cars per hour). At lower speeds, cars take longer to travel the same distance, reducing the overall flow. However, if cars travel much faster than 130 km/h, they need more space between them for safety, reducing the number of cars that can safely be on the road at once. At 130 km/h, the balance between speed and distance is ideal, maximizing throughput while maintaining safety.

I don't like this video at all because, on the one hand, you see sections of highways that are not the German autobahn and, on the other, where drivers commit offenses by overtaking on the right, for example. This is illegal in Germany. In addition, although you are allowed to drive as fast as you like in some places, the "recommended speed" is still 130 kmh. If an accident happens and you were driving significantly faster, you are always partially at fault due to your own speed.
@Al69BfR3 ай бұрын
It‘s also a missconception that you can drive as fast as you can. It‘s also not as fast as you like. IIRC and AFAIK it‘s as fast as you safely can. Even on a road with speed limit going the maximum allowed speed just prevents you from getting a speeding ticket but from being held accountable in case of an accident when traffic, road- and/or weather conditions were unsafe for max speed. Just to clear things up for American viewers.

It's indeed a biased video, showing reckless driving a lot of other places than on the German autobahn. Hey, a German here who worked in the autobahn for years. I transferred cars from a to b. Sometimes just small cars like a vw golf, but also many 5series etc, some M4, C63s etc. with an average of close to 1000miles a day. So yes, often I went down the road quite fast with all the power the car had to offer (since most cars are limited to ~250kph, most times that’s the limit you’re hitting. I had around 20 cars in those years that were unlocked and went around 300kph). Driving fast doesn’t mean driving recklessly. You can drive recklessly while going 130kph and you can take care while going 250kph (which I did most of the time). You just adapt to what’s going on. If there’s a car overtaking a truck, you go off the throttle early and brake slightly to get to the car when it should be switching lanes back to the right lane (which is mandatory here in Germany), then you hit the throttle again. So nobody gets stressed and it’s fine. But it only works if everyone respects the rules and goes along. Sadly, some people don’t and that’s when it gets dangerous. When you go at 250kph and suddenly there’s an asshole on the on-ramp switching to the left most lane in an instant with 70kph or something like that. I had those situations many times, thankfully just close calls, no accidents. But there were situations, when there was no space left between my car and the one in front. Only very quick reactions can save the day in those situations. Nowadays I drive a model 3 highland and I get, why you have speed limits in the US. Sorry, but the suspension is crap, the car has NO stability AT ALL at higher speeds. I nearly shit my pants going down a curvy part of the autobahn at 150kph where I had no problems at all with a VW golf at 220kph or a Mercedes GLE at 240. Thought I got old, then I took a Porsche Taycan 4s for a drive and went down the same curves at vmax without breaking a sweat. So yes, autobahn is awesome. In my opinion we don’t need a general speed limit, it’s fine the way it is. What we need is better education. I’ll die on that hill.
@woodwind3143 ай бұрын
"Sadly, some people don’t and that’s when it gets dangerous. When you go at 250kph and suddenly there’s an asshole on the on-ramp switching to the left most lane in an instant with 70kph or something like that." Happened to me - except it was 2 cars that came onto the Autobahn almost at the same time, blocking both lanes simultaneously. I managed to avoid the first one, only to have the second one pull right in front of me. Result: One death, one severely injured. On the Autobahn, the most prevalent cause for severe accidents is under-use of rear view mirrors.

I'm German, and I usually drive slow (90 to 150 kph), never faster than 190 kph. And if I do, I'm laser focused. It's true: Almost any fast (200 kph or faster) driver drives very decent. They have a very clear idea about what is on the road around them, and they are alert. I've seen many tricky situations of fast drivers that were handled very well and without any accident. Most accidents happen due to inattentiveness.

Its also a very innacurate disription of its construction process. The Autobahn began construction long before the war. Completly normal workers constructed it. As always the viewer now leaves with the impression that prisoners/slaves were responsible for its completion. Complete bogus.
@h.16993 ай бұрын
That's only partially correct, construction began with normal labourers, later somewhat forced labour of political prisoners was used (similar work brigades are common in other countries still), then it switched again. though you are right, afaik nobody got worked to death constructing the autobahn itself, only in the production of the materials used and cars to drive on it... but yes the video starts with inaccuracies and i doubt it'll get better.
@JohnDoe-us5rq3 ай бұрын
A major factor when it comes to the speed limit or the lack thereof is the rule that one has to adapt the speed to the current flow of traffic and the general conditions at all the time. So flying down the autobahn at super high speed is technical illegal, because one is a threat to others, unsuspecting drivers. So, just because you can go 300kph, you always have to anticipate a slower car, and at that speed all cars as basically standing still, will merge in your lane. This results in everyone slowing down as soon, as there is a little traffic. At least, everyone with a brain.

I did 225 kph (140 mph) in my old man's Porsche 944 ('83) once, while driving on the A3 in the Spessart hills. It was no fun, as the wind noise drowned out everything else, even the engine's own, and the A3 back then was only dual carriageway, so you could hardly ever get to that speed with all the traffic slowing you down. A bit later, I took my parents-in-law-to-be on a dash to Rothenburg odT in his Merc 250 D, headed down the A7. The A7 back then could be an absolute racetrack in thinly populated areas. On the way back, my father-in-law suddenly said: "Nice to be sitting in the back of a car, travelling at 105 mph, without even noticing." I myself had not noticed how fast we were going. These days, after 14 years living in Britain, I tend to do 70 mph on the Autobahn, which is often a bit awkward. I really should be driving a bit faster to be able to fit into the traffic flow, but it does save petrol. As regards the footage: Rule of thumb says that if there is street lighting of any shape or form, you are not on the Autobahn, but in another country.

As a German, the fastest I ever went on the Auotbahn was about 240 km/h (about 150 mph), it was in an 5-series BMW rental with an M Sports package. It had automatic transmission which offered several driving modes. If set to "Sport" the dashboard's illumination would change to blood-red and would show your current torque instead of current fuel consumption. 🙂 When I took it to the Autobahn, It was during the week, about mid-day when there was little traffic. Also, I was way younger then and obviously more prone to risk-taking than I am now. At such a speed, your vision is entirely focused at what is happening like a quarter-mile ahead of you. Anything closer is too close for you to react to, anyway. So, while of course it is a rush and feels just awesome, it requires a lot of focus and concentration, and it does get tiring after much shorter a while than you might think. After going that fast for a while, even a normal 70 km/h (some 40 mph) feels like your standing still, which can be a challenge once you get off the Autobahn. I remember hitting the exit with a whopping 160 km/h (100 mph), which felt way slower but of course was way too fast and made for a pretty decent brake-check. The car, and by extension me, passed, fortunately.

Why Germany’s Autobahn Has No Speed Limit? Because speed limits for Autobahn have never been decided. But it is forbidden to hold car races on the Autobahn. There is a law against this and there are also penalties. Unsafe behavior on the Autobahn will be punished! And in the event of an accident, the question arises as to who is to blame. Anyone who drives faster than 130kmh will automatically be considered partly at fault. The faster you drive, the more at fault you are for an accident.

The fuel saving with a speed limit are actually negligible, because most drivers are cruising around the recommended speed already. They are basically acting as if everyone drives this fast. The argument becomes all the more untenable when you consider that only electric vehicles are to be registered in the future. Edit: A speed limit is just greenwashing and propaganda: It's easy and relatively cheap to enact a speed limit, which does nothing to help reducing climate change, but ofc. they can act that it's a big win for the climate because people can't think far enough.

The whole speed limit debate is mostly concerning "but I COULD go as fast as I want!" without really thinking about traffic, fuelcosts or their own 1997 Fiat Punto barely making it uphill in third gear...
@UVCMD3 ай бұрын
@@craddocraddoc What's wrong with being able and allowed to go as fast as you want? As I said, there is miniscule benefit from limiting this. On the other hand, having no limits is a great reason for car manufacturers to upsell a better engine, which results in greater margins, better economy and more tax income for the government.
@craddocraddoc3 ай бұрын
@@UVCMD Imho the main reason is the difference of speeds on the autobahn. Germany is a huge transit zone with traffic from ~10 countrys going through germany every day. Having trucks barely making it past 90km/h uphill, cars going 100-120km/h and "high speed drivers" with speeds obove 170km/h create huge traffic disruptions in an already overloaded and often worn out highway system used by half of europe every day. Flow on the autobahn could be much better if the speeds would match better between all the vehicles. It would help to prevent traffic jams and in general improve the autobahn network to a point were long distance travels could be faster for everyone, if some people would be forced to drive slower. As weird as this might sound.
@UVCMD3 ай бұрын
@@craddocraddoc Another misconception. For a traffic jam to occur a leading car has to slow down the cars following it. If you drive faster than anybody else, then there is no one behind you to slow down if you hit the brakes. If the traffic is already congested, then you won't be able to get up to speed in the first place. The most common reasons of traffic jams are construction sites, that tend to take much longer on Germany than necessary. Another reason for traffic jams are just too many people driving and thus overloading the capacity at a given time. This could be solved by providing good alternatives to driving, like a cheap, fast and reliable railway system. Everything what the DB is not. Like, I would rather travel by train, but 3 out of 4 trips i recently had were delayed by an hour making me lose my transfers and losing even more time. All this while being more expensive than driving and air travel. A reliable and cheap DB would actually be a good solution for reducing green house emissions and reducing congestion. But that would be expensive, unlike enacting some BS speed limit.

So most parties are afraid to touch the issue because they would lose voters.
@StewO1013 ай бұрын
The reason is quite simple. Germany's car manufacturers build a lot of very fast cars. And the automotive industry has a huge lobbying organisation that does everything it can to ensure that there will be no speed limit. Because if there would be one, what would be the point of building expensive cars that can drive 250 kilometres per hour or more.
@craddocraddoc3 ай бұрын
Well, not really. Most german cars suffer from efficiency driven manufacturers and laws concerning the emissions as well. For many years 250km/h was a strong mark, but during the last 20 years it has dropped to 210km/h, while most manufacturers do not even build engines capable of doing that. It is mostly some very specific performace cars that can drive very fast, like the porsche 911 or some AMG mercedes models. But that is not what the average german drives. Neither an Opel Corsa nor a VW Polo will make it above 200km/h. they will run out of steam somewhere beyond the 170km/h mark. And that is what most germans would consider "driving fast": Somewhere between 140 and 170km/h. It is very rare to see cars going above that even on the german autobahn.

@@StewO101 I'm not saying that you can't push your average golf above 200km/h, that is why I wrote 210km/h is basically the new max, but certainly this is neither healthy for the engine nor in any case a pleasent drive and something to consider doing for hours when trying to get from Hamburg to Munich. Talking about the Insignia you either have the 260hp Sports Tourer 2.0 4x4, which was the top-of-the-range-model with a topspeed of 245km/h, or you're making it up, since the average Insignia diesel is listed somewhere between 200 and 220km/h max. I know from personal experience with the Astra and Corsa that the neither the diesel nor the smaller petrol engines are ment to be pushed that hard. Pushing them to the limit for a longer time will make them suffer a lot with overheating problems and wear on the pistons - also the fuel consumption is ridiculous above 160km/h. 14:40 yes, more efficient the faster you go, until a certain threshold. But for most engines, that treshold is very low. Most standard cars have their gas mileage sweet spot at surprisingly low speeds, typically way below 80 km/h, 50 mph. Often even below 40 mph. "Hyper-Milers", who attempt to go as fast as possible with a single tank of gas, will typically choose speeds in that range and they know why. On the other hand, when you go pedal to the metal, your fuel consumption will shoot the roof. Even the difference between 100 km/h and 130 km/h is VERY noticeable. But if you actually go pedal to the metal in any but the very lightest of traffic, it will get even worse, because you will have to brake and re-accelerate all the time. You can, then, literally watch the fuel gauge crawl towards 0.

As with many things people attribute to the Nazies, the plans for the Autobahn had been made by the democratic goverment that was in power before. The program was already underway, when Hitler came to power. Forced labour was only used in 1940, after which it was decided that the main reason for building it, providing jobs, was pointless in a war. So they stopped building it. The whole thing was a hotbed of anti-goverment sentiment and caused more issues than it was worth. It also never played any military role, except as makeshift landing strips. Something everyone around the world took notice of. There had been speed limits in Germany since 1910. The Nazies removed all speed limits in 1934. Reintroduced them in 1939 to save fuel for the war effort, including on the Autobahn (80km/h). 1953 all speed limits got removed, once again. 1957 a speed limit of 50 km/h inside of city limits was introduced. 1972 temporary speed limits, right before the oil crisis. Also, introducing "Richtgeschwindigkeit" of 130 km/h on the Autobahn. A advisory speed limit, which makes you partialy liable, when involved in an accident, if it could be argued that you could have prevented the accident at 130 km/h. 1976 "temporary"? "We ment, on a trial basis!" General speed limits become permanent. A lot of talk since than, with small adjustments. Trying to introduce a speed limit on the Autobahn is something you do, when you want the other guys to take over the goverment. PS. Others mentioned it, a lot of the videos are not showing the Autobahn.

@14:30 It has nothing to do with engine efficiency. Efficiency of the engine is how well it converts chemical energy into mechanical energy. What's important here is 1. Higher speeds require more accelerations and deceleration 2. E = m*v*v, meaning to maintain a higher speed against resistance/drag requires a disproportionately higher, constant input of energy to maintain it, meaning more fuel use.

I once had the opportunity to drive in a car that did 310 kmh (192 mph) for a short segment. It's bonkers, the trucks and cars on the right track, which still drive about 100 kmh (60 mph) appeared to stand still, like parking.
