I'm Irish and I buy organic free range eggs. Our eggs are different shades of brown and speckled. I find feathers on the eggs occasionally. They come in small, medium, large and extra large sizes. The eggs are sold in 6, 12 and 24 depending on the size.I would rather buy 6 extra large eggs for breakfast and medium sized for baking. The egg cartons are not sealed because you need to check for damaged eggs. The American white eggs look unnatural.

The real reason why the US has different regulations, is just the lobbyism, because only big farms can afford the fashing process, and so small farms can't sell their eggs due to the fashing process being expensive.

The issue with washing them is that 1) is risky, you could contaminate the egg if done improperly. 2) it damages the natural protection of the egg, so you have to refrigerate them. And that also adds a risk, because if the refrigeration chain is broken in transit the moisture from condensation on the eggshell can lead to contamination. So you could do all of that, or just not wash them and trust that the eggshell will do its job. It's cheaper and safer. Most of the world doesn't wash the eggs and there's no issue.

There is also an animal welfare issue with the eggs, you cant get clean eggs from battery chicken farmed eggs, farmers needing to produce clean eggs drives better conditions for the animals. US chicken farms tend to pack chickens into large 'battery cages', layered on top of each other in the minimum of space, so the eggs (and the chickens) get covered in crap all day long hence needing the extra washing, batterys have been illegal in the EU since 99, chickens have more space and the eggs dont get a shower of crap making them much cleaner. The choice seems to be cheap eggs with an added expense of cleaning and refrigerating them (plus extra energy use), or more expensive to produce eggs with no added costs.

Hello there! Yes, that's true. In Finland cases of salmonella are practically nonexistant. U.S. agribusiness is on such a scale and the distance (geographically and timewise) between producers and consumers is much longer than in most European countries. This means that fresh produce and eggs, for example, must be treated and manipulated to ensure that they remain fit for consumption much longer than in Europe, where most foods are produced 'locally' by U.S. standards. In Finland, fresh eggs are not washed prior to being sold for the exact reason mentioned. Nature knows best how to conserve products and protect them from harmful bacteria etc. Finnish eggs are sold by the dozen or half-dozen in reclaimable cartons with lids. Just like tomatoes, cucumbers and bananas, for instance, fresh eggs should not be kept in the refrigerator. Like many food items, they should be consumed fairly fast. Dates are shown on the carton.

I encountered a rotten egg once, in the beginning of the eighties. I was about nine or ten years old, and frequently cooked fried eggs. One day, an egg that I cracked open, and splashed onto the hot frying pan, was blue inside. Immediately, a horrible stench filled the kitchen. My brave and manly reaction was to flee, and let my mother handle the mess. In the past forty years, I haven't seen anything like it, so I believe that truly rotten eggs are very rare.

Hello Ryan, since you asked for studies on the safety of eggs, here is one for Europe: Linda Chanamé Pinedo, Lapo Mughini-Gras, Eelco Franz, Tine Hald, Sara M. Pires, "Sources and trends of human salmonellosis in Europe," 2015-2019: An analysis of outbreak data, International Journal of Food Microbiology, Volume 379, 2020. The study is online available for free form sciencedirect. In 34 European countries about 300 cases with 5400 infected were reported as Salmonellosis case. About 30% were caused by infected eggs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that each year in the U.S., there are about 1.35 million cases of salmonellosis. Note: the CDC data are estimates while the European data are reported cases. The remarks of the original video on food safety is correct: Both ways (washing+cooling or not washing and good hygiene at the farms) produce save eggs. However, the US way requires that eggs are permanently cooled during transport. So if you buy a cooled egg from the supermarket, then transport it your car and it starts to get moist with condensation then the egg is not safe for consumption anymore. So when buying eggs in the USA better put them in a cooling box.

So it is 100 salmonella cases from spoiled eggs in a population larger than 400 million. That's 0,000025 %. Even if that number is per year, it is still extremely low. Listeria seem to be more dangerous.

It is very rare for any of the eggs to have poop on them. My aunt just wipes of majority of it with a dry tissue but never washes the eggs. Her eggs are good and safe for at least 4 weeks without any refrigeration. Also, once an egg has been refrigerated, it should remain refrigerated till consumption. If the refrigeration chain has been broken, there is high risk for bacteria to get into the egg due to condensation/sweating on the egg.

2/3 of eggs inthe US are produced in battery farms, which have been illegal in many parts of Europe for years, or even decades, depending on the country. You are not able to buy egs where chickens have the space of a piece of paper to "move". A well kept chicken would never poop on the egg it's layed, at least not on purpose, but in battery farms there's shit and death in every corner. If you would change the system in the US immediately, US people would either have no eggs to buy or would poop their souls out and probably die, if they'd consume such unsanitary products. I don't care about organic food stuffs, but, where I currently live, you usually choose between free-range (organic or not) and cage-free and I would never dare to get cage-free eggs, because even this conditions are horrible for the hens. @@tovarishcheleonora8542

@@Ho_Lee_Fook THAT was my biggest cultural shock when learning things, how they're done in US of A. i had heard some vague rumours about sandwiches with mayo but i kinda imagined it goeth thusly: bread, butter, something (ham or cheese or whatnot), bit of mayo as condiment, or smth similar, some seasoning. (what i have here, it is not really sandwich, bc no upper bread, how do y'all call such thing? here it is just literally 'bread-and-butter'; 'ham-bread-and-butter', 'cheese-bread-and-butter') when you put mayo on bread, doesn't it get soggy as eff in 2 seconds? i eat some crackers (or wossname, buckwheat galettes) so: putting lil bit mayo on and then biting, not losing any crispiness. also, i guess, that's why there's no need to store butter in fridge - it gets eaten on sandwiches sooner than it has chance to go bad. normal butter will appear and taste funny after 3 or more days on counter. but i keep my butter in fridge, so's safe from cats and other animals. 🧈🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐭🐭🐁🐁🐀🦎🐜🪰🪰🦠🦠 other ppl have nice butter containers with cover.

@@Ho_Lee_Fook Mayo doesn't have the same effect as butter for making a 'good sandwich'. Also American 'butter' and alternative spreads don't have to meet the same criteria as the UK or Europe to be labeled as such. European butter is HIGHER in butterfat content. Then regular bread purchased in an American store can have upto 500% MORE sugar than a standard loaf in the UK for example. One reason they just don't make sandwiches in the same way as other countries. Mayo as a 'protective barrier' on bread slices doesn't make for a LONG lasting sandwich to take on a picnic... it will become soggy over time!

In the US farmers are allowed to add to flocks, a practice that can introduce problems within those flocks. I’ve seen videos where US meat producers have said that “it doesn’t matter how the food gets on the plate as long as it gets on the plate.” I don’t buy US produced rice because of the amount of insect parts allowed in its production.

Hi Ryan here in the Netherlands we store our eggs also on a shelve that's in the store same as in people's homes. Never in fridges! I get my eggs from a farm even go early morning to get the most fresh ones! Go home and enjoy a lovely breakfast. They are very tasty and the chikens are happy because they run around free. And ...no I do not wash them before consuming!!

Butter stays edible longer when stored at room temperature than margarine, which will go rancid faster. If you like, put 1/2 of your butter in the fridge and leave the other half out for daily use.

US Food safety is that you can put anything into food products until it is proved to be unsafe. EU (and for the moment UK) Food safety is that you can't put anything into food products until it has been proved to be safe, Big difference

If you think about it USA farmers /egg producers want too battery farm eggs for maximum profit Europe farmers want too do the same but the government say you have to produce good clean ethical eggs ,so most of the USA eggs are battery and most of EU are free range . This is a wide ranging approximation but it gives you the general idea

Butter is refrigerated in the shops, but margarine (the plant oil based alternative to butter) usually isn't. Also the UK apparently sells packs of a dozen eggs. In Germany it's only 10 pieces in a pack, or 6 (sometimes 4) in the small ones.

Margarine is refrigerated in the UK, just like butter. Egg packs in the UK come in 6, 10, 12, 15, 18 and occasionally 24. I've seen a 4 pack of eggs but it was a special pack, not generally available.

I keep my eggs and butter (in a glass butter dish with a lid) in the same kitchen cupboard, apart from the extra 2/3 packs of butter in the fridge (for baking cakes, etc), and have never had any issues, although even in Summer we don't get the same temperatures as parts of the US. Eggs are generally sold in boxes of 6 or 12, although some of the cheaper 'mixed-weight' eggs (usually from other production methods) may be in 10's or 15's - the colour of the eggs shells depends on the breed of hen, most of ours are free-range, brown eggs - although you can get white ones, as well as pale blue ones, and even duck/quail eggs in large supermarkets! Even though every fridge I've had or seen has a thing for putting eggs into, most of us never use them!

UK & EU chickens are vaccinated, US chickens are not, it would cost about 15 cents per chicken, this cost is often sited as the reason. Note on refrigerating Unwashed (UK & EU) eggs, once they are refrigerated, they should continue to be refrigerated.

Yeah, like washing eggs doesn't add any additional expenses... Water and chlorine and those egg washing machines are free and machine maintenance and repair is also free (sarcasm).. Plus you vaccinate a chicken once and she is good for life. While eggs need to be washed every day as most egg laying chickens (bread to lay maximum eggs) lay an egg a day.

No, Brits don’t leave butter out at room temperature except when buttering bread and sandwiches at the dinner table ready to be eaten immediately. 95% of the world DON’T refrigerate their eggs and they are cheaper to buy because the US process of washing and refrigerating employs thousands of extra workers and their salaries are reflected by higher prices to the N. American consumers.

I worked on farms and with farmers during my studies in Biology. Eggs have pores, like our skin and it breaths through these pores. If you clean or wipe the eggs you close these pores and they go bad very quick. We have free range eggs in our stores or partly free range. And the farmers don't clean the eggs so you have really fresh eggs. And thats why we don't need to store them in a fridge.

How would a bird provide refrigeration to its eggs until the chicks are hatched? Eggs are meant to NOT spoil in high temperatures because birds nest during spring and summer. So eggs don't need to be washed. Chickens need around 20 days to brood. Therefore the shelf life of eggs is at least 20 days without cooling.

The natural 'bloom' actually protects the egg and washing it off makes it more likely to allow bacteria in. You can always wash the egg off before you use it so that any dirt on it doesn't get into your Eggs Benedict or Omelette. I keep my girls eggs on the counter until I have a dozen then put them into the fridge til I can use them or give them away to the neighbours.

Most reaction videos for immigrants into Australia from the UK and the EU always comment on when going to a supermarket, is that our eggs are kept in the fridge, which is true. Go to fruit & vegetables only store or a road side seller and they’re NOT. There is this weird thing that we have the similar practices to both USA and the EU but not necessarily the same regulation. in fact I’ve got eggs in my fridge right now that both countries might class as filthy, but they were never refrigerated until they came to our home. Truly I believe they do last longer in the fridge only because you don’t have the extremes in temperature for days on end and unbeknownst to most people. Every home in Australia does not have have fully ducted air-conditioning we do resemble European in that regard in that we open the whole house up when it’s moderately warm and air the place, that’s probably because over 50% of the people are European background here. In Germany many farmers have mobile hen trailers that allow the chickens to run around a field and are moved to a new field every month or so. The farmers usualy have small huts where they sell the eggs on a honor system, so you can buy them 24/7. No companies involved. And yes, they are sometimes dirty and with feathers. But you can choose which ones you take.

Those afraid of a little Chicken poop can just wash the egg before cracking it. But it's on the shell, so who cares? I don't know how long American eggs lasts, but shelf life here is around one month in room temp, and a little longer if stored in the fridge. And yes, butter is best stored in room temperature, it's much more workable, and it lasts way longer than most people realize.

eggs are mainly completely clean in the UK and come in organic, free range, barn or cage raised. Most people don't like using cage or barn raised for the welfare issues although they are cheaper and go for free range instead. All come in cardboard boxes which everyone opens to check for damaged eggs prior to purchase. And eggs are all stamped with a date for use by. Ideally you want free range eggs stamped with a red lion or a little red tractor on box, this shows the farm has not only adhered to government standards, but has also been independently inspected to meet animal welfare and food standards
