The word "hysterical" derives from the Greek word "hystera" meaning "womb" and the condition of "hysteria" was thought to emanate from the womb and this term was coined for that reason. Therefore, by definition, it originally only applied to women as males do not have wombs.

Here in Britain, we did (seriously) used to have these sort of films back in the day. I have a DVD of old Public Information Films, where one is from the 1950s, regarding safety on the road. It features a dapper chap (as in this clip,) who says: "There, that's better - that woman isn't a bad driver after all...quite attractive too." But the whole thread is about her being a ditzy driver - she's putting her lipstick on in the mirror, etc.

I once taught a class about problems in diagnosis using Hysteria as an example. My students were 20 young women. When they started getting outraged I reminded them not to get hysterical! I finished with something along the lines of, "so in summary, men are the worst... we're just bad people".

They all derive from the (ancient) Greek word for womb. ὑστέρα (hustéra, “womb”). In a world that required men to die in battle or slaving in a field, emotions were only tolerated in women, but not indulged. It wasn't so much misogyny, as it was a reflection on how harsh the world was on the 99% of men that were not in the elite.

The ancient Greek word 'hysteria' means 'wandering uterus', the original idea being that a woman's uterus wanders around her body causing massive emotional mayhem and means that they can't do basic things like study very much. It was first noted down in Egypt 4,000 years ago, but it was the Victorian British who somehow decided that they'd found a way to diagnose hysteria, so they concocted various truly alarming forms of medication and 're-education' to subjugate woman. If the women complained or had a mental breakdown from the torture they'd be locked up for good somewhere like the hellish sanatorium of Bethlehem (Bedlam). In the early years of diagnosis women asking for equal rights was seen as a sign of hysterical madness.
