No matter your nationality (I’m English), for me there is no better sound than bagpipes, there’s just nothing else that rouses the same emotions as they do. The Highland Games never been but would love to. For me it’s sticky toffee pudding with custard. I do love catching up with your beautiful family and the way you are both so happy and full of enthusiasm for all you do. Finigan is adorable. We are a dog loving family and firmly believe children should grow up in a pet friendly environment, I believe it teaches them so much. Looking forward to catching up with your next release.

I loved your video! Our American family visited the games that day as well. It was wonderful. Surprisingly, we didn’t experience the crowds (or rain) because we arrived first thing in the morning. We had registered our teen girls to compete in a few heavy events (for the cultural experience), but they were disqualified because they weren't wearing kilts. Lol. That totally makes sense now! We had such a great time with the music and dancing. The youth competitors were impressive as well. We ate lunch, shopped the booths, and continued on our wonderful Scottish vacation. This brought back some memories for me. My wife played the bagpipes and when we lived in Calgary Alberta, it was off to the Red Deer games each year for obvious reasons. as she was a MacPherson and well into the Scottish culture. We had two Border Collies with us as we didn't want to leave them on their own all day. So on to the games area for the first year we did this with doggies happily keeping us company trotting along at our side but then the pipers struck up with a jolly reel - followed by two dogs joining in with very loud howls, snouts high in the air, lips nicely rounded. At least they seemed to be in tune. Many heads turned to stare at us - Oops - so back away from the grounds and leave doggies in the car! We enjoyed the day despite the rather embarrassing start. Doggies probably not quite so much!

Just wondering about the drone footage I've seen in a number of your videos. Do you have to have a Flyer and / or Operator License (as defined by the UK CAA), and, if so, did you have them before arriving in the UK or did you obtain them subsequent to your arrival? Didn't know whether any work you might have previously done with the CHP might have included drone operation, which could have transferred over to the UK for licensing. Just love this whole series of the record of your family's move to Edinburgh, a city I have visited twice and to which I would choose to move if I had to leave the US (as one of my high school class mates has)..

Hi! Yes, I have both the flyer and operator license. I didn't need both as my drone is under the 250g limit (249g), but it is a simple test and small fee, so I figured it was better safe than sorry. I got these when we got over here and didn't have them in the US. The use of drones was just starting to take off (sorry 😜) before I left, and it was only for a specialist unit. Thank you for your kind words and for following our adventure! All the best.

In Sydney, there are also suburbs called Haymarket and Waverley. Sticky toffee pudding is a staple in restaurants in Oz. Having Scottish heritage i would love to attend a Scottish games.

I am quite jealous and I tell you that beer is cheap! The south is very expensive for beer. My ancestors were the lairds of Stirling. I can’t wait to visit that area and come to a games

FYI. Cumbria used to be part of Strathclyde and so therefore part of Scotland years ago

Zach had the same face on the train that I have when I get on and there are no seats 😅 platform 17 is cursed, that’s where I always get the train and there is always an issue! PS I’m with Annie on the sticky toffee pudding. Personally I love to surround mine in a moat of cream. So good 😋

Great day out, even the train journey gave something to talk about. But then we have to talk about the elephant in the room, sticky toffee pudding without custard. I need to sit down before I do some damage.

Thank you! I thought custard would be the cherry on top!

Americans always comment on how good British public transport is. Well welcome to the real world 😂. What a beautiful place you visited for the Games. Im from Durham in North East England so our weather is somewhat the same. Good to see Annie getting the clothing correct now and Zach is bomming the rugged look. Great vid again you guys ❤❤

Haha now that Zach doesn’t work in law enforcement, he gets to try out the rugged look for the first time in 7 years. Think it suits him!

guys just a little question on your baking, this is more for annie, how is she getting on with imperial weights, and metric, as we use both, useing wiegh scales, and a kettle lol, compared to the US where its a standard to use cups a measure tool for baking
@SimpleScottishLiving4 ай бұрын
I actually enjoy how my recipes turn out more similarly each time I make them! I absolutely love baking, and weighing out the ingredients just makes so much more sense. Using a cup measure is slightly different every time.

The Highland Games looked great fun but that weekend train lottery isn’t fun is it. Totally understand about bus diversions they are a nightmare and guaranteed to make me feel🤢! I never knew about the bike races, that was random, wonder how many points you get for hitting them with the hammers 😂!! Great choice for sticky toffee pudding, yum and yes definitely originates in England in a place called Cartmell in the Lake District I believe. You can buy their puddings and sauce but so much better to make your own 😋. Xx
@SimpleScottishLiving4 ай бұрын
It made a big difference being homemade! Next time we’ll do the custard as well! Haha let’s go with 10 points for the hammer into bikes toss.

We’re a British husband/American wife currently considering a move to the UK after nearly 12 years in Sonoma County (maybe our paths crossed at some point!). Would love to hear more about the practicalities of planning your move and making it happen, and any tips you have. Looks like you guys are settling in nicely 🙂 glad to have stumbled across your vids, keep up the great work, you’re doing a great job.

What a small world! Perfect timing! Our video for this Sunday is about much of that as we’ve been requested by viewers in similar situations. It’s the “true cost” of moving to the UK and some of the logistics involved.

Should book The Enchanted Forest near Pitlochry for a really good evening. Best go late afternoon and spend time in the town with the Halloween goings on then you get the coach from the Fishers Hotel to the Forest and the walk. Good for buggies and awesome for adults and wee kids.
