I am a member of the Clan Colquhoun society and as well as website designer attended the clan games at Luss each year. So watched many of the highland games in the field. Best was in the procession from car park to games field vis Luss pier on west shore of Loch Lomond. All behind a couple of pipers. No matter how maybe i have heard. The sound of the pipes brings out the proudness of being Scottish.

I remember 56lb (pound) weights (an approx 20 X 12 X 15 cm cube of iron with the cylindrical handle and semi circular cylindrical cut-out forming a hand grip in the top surface) being used with a rope tied to the handle to hold thick plastic sheeting over market stalls in Swaffham market - they were a very common sight in rural communities in the 1980's

@ruthaisling Yes, I've been to Highland Games in Washington and British Columbia and a "fiddler's convention" in North Carolina. Wonderful days out (sun screen a must!), but none had the intensity of the Cowal games. Maybe it was the inclusion of the world Scottish dance championships. Also fun is the Celtic Colours festival in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a smaller version of Glasgow's Celtic Connections. 🙂

But now I hope that you try to get to one or two a year to hang out with the friendly and motivated folk -- do some dancing and have some great food!

The thing which makes the Scotish Highland Games so good is how raw and honest and under produced or stage managed it is. That's so refreshing .No stupidly overblow million billion dollar stadia or stadiums . It's more like a music festival with a big focus on kaber tossing , highland dancing , tugs of war, and all the other brilliant stuff like hammer throwing and shot putting.

A no No in the Kingdom.

I grew up in Queensland, Australia, where Highland games were part of our annual fairs, along with the local agricultural shows etc. We went every single year. After Uni in the 1980s I lived in Tokyo for 2 years and in that time made a trip to Scotland where I went to the highland games in Drumnadrochit. It was so odd to be in Scotland hearing bagpipes making me homesick for Queensland! Later I moved to the USA and fairly recently, around 2015, I went to a massed clan gathering outside Seattle. The clans paraded together playing the same song on the bagpipes and it brought years to my eyes. You either love the bagpipes or you hate them and I love them!

Beautiful views of the Highlands. The sound made by bagpipes is one of my favorite sounds because it gives me a sense of nostalgia, similar to the oboe. The plaid pattern of the traditional costume kilt is now a familiar sight as the uniform of Japanese school girls, but this is where the origins lie, and you will be surprised by the beautiful variations of the plaid pattern. This festival looks like it will be lively and fun, like a Japanese sports day.

I`m Aussie of mainly Irish descent but i like Scottish dancing better. Turncoat

Ceilidhs are great fun, but a Strip The Willow in a confined space can be lethal! 😂 Glen Coe's a fantastic drive, isn't it?

Glen Coe was 😍 Haha yes, I remember when I was younger sometimes having bruises on my arms the next day

Excellent video, there are many similarities between this and Irish culture. Hardly surprising when you think how close we are.

So similar, my mum is Irish and I spend a lot of time in Ireland. I visited a Scottish island yesterday and it was so similar to some of the Irish islands in the west in Connemara that I really thought I could have been in Ireland.

Generally yes not sure how you can see it from the highland games

A lot of those events were let die away in ireland for the simple reason 82000 won't pay to see them ,Even though the GAA are supposedly an amateur association.I love Hurling and Gaelic football but they could have hung on to these events or the organisation that took over athletics could have kept them but they concentrated on olympic events and there is nothing with that either irish athletes have brought great honour to the country but they could have hung on to more of the heavy events
@tramptruck4859 Жыл бұрын
@@gallowglass2630 I agree the heavy events are not in Ireland but I can assure you that GAA is alive and well 🙂 There's a couple of thriving clubs near us. It was mainly the piping and dancing I was thinking about, along with the many other family and cultural ties and similarities.

Yes of course the GAA is thriving.The music part reminds me of a fleadh or feis here in ireland

You'll probably not find it in literature, but the games were the only way to train for war. Everything thing was ban from the sword to the spear. By entering for the games it means the men could train and keep fit if evern needed for battle.

It's a good old Scottish festival. I want to experience it once. Is there food like ramen in Scotland?
@ruthaisling Жыл бұрын
Please visit Scotland sometimes to experience a Highland Games for yourself. Noodles like ramen is not a traditional dish in Scotland but you can find Japanese and Chinese restaurants in major cities and towns like Glasgow and Edinburgh. Be prepared to pay much higher prices for ramen than you would in Japan!
