The song is about absent Fathers, the "Narrator" been the CHild that ask the question or is been asked by others "Where is your Father?" ("ou est ton Papa?"). Stromae is playing the Missing Father in this clip, that is represented by a Doll/Mannequin, the Kid seeing and watching other kids been with their parents (All the dancers are an adult and a child, either they found Dancers that had kids that also danced, or they found matched pairs that looked close enough for the illusion to work) By the End you see that the Doll/manequin "dance" with his Son, it is the Kid imagining what it would be like to have his Father with him, Stromae dancing is Stiff, cause the kids is imagining it has such, never knowed his father personaly, he can only imagine him how he would do it, but with only a Stiff Father figure, thats all he can do. By the end the Kid is also becoming stiff as the Father's Mannequin, cause of the Fear of also been an absentee Father when its turn will come, the fear and anxiety to repeat what you lived through. Stromae's Father was killed in the rwanda's genocide, so he hardly knew him and grw up without a father, this song is a dedication to his father, but also to all the people who had to grew up without a father figure. Its something that tocuhes me, cause i also never knew my father, he died when i was 1yro from a work accident,a nd my Mother had to bring me up on her own with my grandparents.

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Stromae! This song is lived experience for him dealing about the absence of a father who was fickle moreover killed in the genocide in 1994 (Rwanda). He cried when he wrote these lyrics. Papaoutai is just an invented word which means "Papa Où T'Es" in French (Papa Where Are You). It's a song released on 05.13.2013 as a second single taken from "Racine Carrée" album with a "retro" choreographed music video. It has house style mixed with pop influences and African rhythms,a little variety too. It became no.1 in France and Belgium in August 2013. On YT, the M/V has exceeded 800 million views! Incredible!!! Kudos Stromae! You should react on Formidable (Ceci N'Est Pas Une Leçon), a song with subtitled lyrics shot in Brussels near a tram stop on hidden camera, another HUGE HIT the same year which did the "buzz" at the time! Thanks for your great work Dereck! 👍😉

One of my all time favorite songs. Stromae is incredible! The point of the video is that kids need their fathers in their lives, and that they become like them, even if they're not there... which the protagonist kid did in the end: mimicking the dad mannequin. The dad was actually absent from his life and the dance where the mannequin started dancing was just the kid's imagination.

Stromae is an amazing artist who is both loved by young and old people. He mix old stuff with new one. He made his own beats that appeal to young people but sings like a man in the 70's. While doing this, he also make amazing music video with original dances. The music that you called "salsa" is actually a very usual tempo from Congo. Stromae is very gifted as he associates different styles in his music. Most of all, he is like a poet. It's sad you can't understand french. But just know his lyrics are always profound and have different meaning. The title "Papaoutai" can be translated by "Where are you, dad?" but il can also mean "To be duped". You can see the boy missing his dad. His mom always lie to him saying that his father is here but he works all the time. So the kid imagine a dummy of his father. Because it's fake he can't bond with him. So the boy become more and more frustrated and envious of the kids who have parents. At the end, he misses his dad so much he duped himself thinking the dummy is real and he actually had a dad too. The clip, the music, the song, the dance and the lyrics are amazing.

Hi Dereck, Thanks for reacting on this amazing song. FYI, the guitar pattern you can hear all along the song is a 100% Congolese Rumba style.

He's my cousin's neighbor in Bruxelles,a very nice guy,who never considered himself a star(although he definitely is).Wonder where he disappeared ,because he hadn't released new songs in years. Try some live versions too,he's a great performer.

Hi Oliver, Stromae got malaria while touring in Africa a few years back and he struggled to get back to full health. The rumour in 2021 is that he is back creating music. Fingers crossed!

Fun fact: that is actually not a mannequin but Stromae himself, wearing a LOT of makeup to achieve that plastic look. Another thing I found interesting is that for the visuals of this video he apparently drew a lot of inspiration from Tintin which is both funny because Tintin and Stromae are both Belgian, but also sort of funny in a “reclaiming” way due to the, uh… questionable…. Representation of people of color usually present in Tintin albums. There's a video from some Belgian music awards show where Stromae performs this song live after being carried up to the stage by four people, all the way from the parking outside, while he's keeping perfectly still and has this terrifying mannequin-esque smile like in this video. Talk about performance artistry.

I am a father but the mother her doesn’t let me near him to the frustration of my son and me. My ex boyfriend an I decided to become fathers and the mother we chose ( simply put) decided afterwards to keep the child for herself. Women can do that so easily. Therefore the song is very important to me. It’s symbolic to a larger extent. “ Dad where are you” in more than one way...never underestimate the importance of fathers. When you become a father: be proud and fulfill your role to the fullest!
