I remember fragments of a story about a POW escaping over the Alps late in ww2. He told a story about a soldier in an unknown uniform guiding him home through a blizzard. I don't believe in ghost stories, but ... what if?

Makes sense. Since many of the bodies were never recovered, they still hold their vigil in a symbolic sense, and would see the end of WWI, and then the start and end of WWII.

The Tyrolean campaign (Italy vs. Austria-Hungary for the Tyrol area of the Alps) is one of the least talked-about parts of WWI. But leave it up to Sabaton to fins a way to salute the loyal soldiers on both sides.

On December 13th, 1916 at 5 AM, known as White Friday, a series of avalanches hit both Austro Hungarian and Italian barracks and basically buried them with everyone inside. People reported afterwards that both Austro Hungarian and Italian troops fired artillery at the loose snow on the mountains to cause avalanches on each other's side. The total death toll is unknown, but approximately 2000 soldiers died and a dozen civilians. Many of the bodies were never found. Some are being found nowadays with the ice on the mountains melting more and more due to climate change.

Its not quite the Battles of Isonzo, but close enough to my homeland of Slovenia, in the Italian Alps above it. "Fun" fact about the Isonzo front in WW1, a Slovenian poet, Simon Gregorčič, wrote a poem in 1879 called Soči (meaning "to the river Soča" or in Italian called the river Isonzo) where he first talks about how beautiful the river is, comparing it to a young girl, then he talks about how it reminds him of home, and then warns it about terrible times that are to come, where brothers will fight brothers (Slovenes under the Italian kingdom were indeed fighting against Slovenes under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as we didnt have our own country at the time), there will be lead hailstorms, bloody rain and streams of tears, clashing of blades and the river will run red with blood. Finally he calls out to the river to rise up and wash away the land hungry invaders from our lands, which, in due time, did happen evetually. Quite the accurate prediction of WW1 and the political consequences of it.

Great reaction (and timing. Wasnt expecting the actual countdown for the music video lol!) One I can recommend is Metal Machine (the lyric video, sadly no music video). One of the few Sabaton songs thats not pertained to military history, but its a dedication to metal bands and music overall (has a lot of Easter Eggs and even its own Sabaton History).

I think they used the WWII fighters to show the passage of time, that 25-30 years later he’s still there, guarding his post. They wouldn’t make a simple mistake like that. Or they thought it looked badass when the fighter pulled up behind Hannes. Either way I love it.

@@akribiiiYeah just like Gandalf is a dwarf from the old sagas, Mordor is highly possible inspired on what Carl Von Linnè wrote about Falun. It was a area where smoke from the mines and manufactures covered the land. The stone was black be sot and the hammer where never quiet. Falun is very different now obviously but it still a fun story.

Another great (and quick!) Sabaton reaction - as an army brat, historian and Sabaton fan I've enjoyed your Sabaton reactions considering your own military service. I would second the request for "Far from the Fame". The song is of particular interest for several reasons. The song is about the Czechoslovak air force officer (later general) Karel Janoušek who served in the British Royal Air Force. Because of his service his wife Anna and one of his sisters were murdered Auschwitz, one of his brothers were murdered in Buchenwald while two brothers-in-law died in jail. After the war he was persecuted by the Communist authorities because he had served during the war with the western forces. Joakim is half Swedish and half Czech (his mother), is proud of his Czech heritage and considers the Czech Republic as his second home. So if available, a live performance from the Czech Republic (Masters of Rock 2014 is a good option here, alternatively Prague 2020). Kindest regards from a half-Norwegian half-Czech military historian / army brat.

Global warming is causing glaciers to recede, exposing the WWI dead for the first time in a century. This has been going on for some time, but it's happen more and more often. The lyrics reference that, the mountains are giving up at least some of their dead. Verse 1 Here on the alpine slope, where I did my final stand I shall remain Among the ice and snow that binds me to this mountain Pre-Chorus 2 All of these years I have been frozen in time I cried for spring to come but here, winter remain

Had a chuckle about Joakim being under dressed for the weather. I suppose it all depends on what you are acclimated to. Reminded me of hiking in the Rockies with friends and the group of us deciding we were too warm so we stripped off our shirts and sat in the snow for a water break. I’ve been enjoying your Sabaton reactions enough I should probably check out some of your others.

Being warm enough to sweat while in the cold can actually be dangerous as the sweat will help the cold pull the heat from your body on top of dehydrating you, making the risk of hypothermia much higher
@Karthara2 жыл бұрын
@@Nyx_2142 Quite true, thus why if you are camping in the cold it is good practice to have a set of clothing for sweating in during the day, and a set of dry clothing to sleep in at night so you stay warmer. Also layers so you can adjust how much insulation you need at any given moment.
