So helpful! Doctors estimate I'll go fully deaf by the time I'm 26 but until then I'm just very hard of hearing and there is nothing they can do. I can't afford local asl classes so you doing this is amazing and I learned so much from your videos and feel like going deaf might not be the worst thing for me if I already know how to communicate

I had my first conversation in ASL with a stranger! I opened the door for someone and he said thank you in ASL! I signed 'hi' before I knew it :) I told him I've been learning a little bit of sign and he said that was great of me to learn! He had a very big smile on his face as well as I :) Thank you very much for these lessons. If lessons 01-08 let me have a quick, hallway conversation with someone new, I can't wait for more!!

I've had a chance to talk with a few deaf people, it is one of my favorite things to do and I wish I had more chances to do it! It's such a blessing to them when us who can hear and speak take time to learn their language. Such an amazing way to reach out to them!
@sign-language5 жыл бұрын
Bronwyn, Tip: Please analyze your statement: "It's such a blessing to them" ...and consider how such a statement might be viewed from the eyes of Deaf people. You may get better long-term results if you approach your learning and use of sign language not as an act of condescension but as a bridge between equals who happen to use different languages. Please don't misunderstand my reaching out here. I have a thousand other things I could do. I get the feeling your heart is in the right place -- I'm just encouraging you to make sure to not dysconsciously imply that your "place" is above that of someone else's place.

Hello :) The sign for "kitchen" has two popular variations. The first one is an initialized version of the sign for COOK. What you do is you sign COOK but use a "K" handshape on your dominant hand. The other common version of KITCHEN is to hold up a "K" in the regular fingerspelling position and shake it side to side (about an inch) a couple times. For an example of these signs go over to my website (Lifeprint) and look up the "kitchen" page. - Dr. Bill p.s. Your "COOK-ROOM" idea is fine too.

I find it a tragedy that our govt & most insurances will cover an infinite amount of abortions for myself, but not hearing aids. I did work as a nurse. Your videos are so helpful in assiting me to communicate with others. I was in hospital A & E waiting to be seen and was able to communicate with another deaf person with a life threatening condition. i was able to let the triage nurse know that his condition was more serious than he let on. thank you for your education. it made a huge difference.

Dr. Bill, at 33:25 did you say you use a tree in your backyard for the bathroom? Also, for most signs that you use two hands for (pants, put, have, etc), could you use just one hand to do those signs most of the time?
@sign-language8 жыл бұрын
Many (but certainly not all) signs that are done with two hands can be done with one hand -- especially if we are signing informally or casually. The signs for HAVE and PUT are often done with one hand. The sign for PANTS however would generally only be done with one hand if you were holding in your other hand.

hi Dr. Bill, I've been slowly working thru your videos which have been very good. I was good til i hit lesson 8, at which point it seems the student's ASL knowledge has taken a quantum leap and i have to stop the recording because the student seem to know words i haven't seen before. Same thing happens on lesson 9. There is a slower version for lesson 8 (introductory paced) but i dont see if for lesson 9. Is there a remedial video progression schedule that allows those of us learning at a slower pace (like the first few videos) to keep up without having to stop the video so often during the presentation? It's all good stuff but it's a struggle to keep up in real time. thank you

Try pre-studying the lesson over at Lifeprint.com (click on the individual vocabulary links, review the sentences, etc.) and then watch the video after you have studied each vocabulary item in the lesson. Also, don't worry if you miss a sign here or there. Just press on and watch a few more videos then come back to the one that gave you trouble and often, almost seemingly by magic, you will understand the video that earlier gave you trouble. See below for more tips: How to use ASL University to learn sign language for free: 1. Visit Lifeprint.com and become familiar with the ASL University website. 2. Bookmark the official ASLU KZbin master playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PL6akqFwEeSpiLwRFA3ZvuOWMwPXwI7NqA 3. For quick reviews (to prevent memory extinction) bookmark the "Signs" channel playlist page: kzbin.infoplaylists or more specifically: kzbin.infoplaylists?view=50&sort=dd&shelf_id=1 4. If you use a desktop or laptop computer you can look up signs using this page: www.lifeprint.com/search.htm 5. If you use a mobile device you can look up signs using this page: www.lifeprint.com/search/index.htm 6. If you can’t find a sign after using the search options at Lifeprint.com then consider applying to join the Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group and asking your question there. See: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/ 7. Go through the ASLU Lessons for free: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lessons.htm Your comments, questions, or suggestions are always welcome. @sign-language8 жыл бұрын
Just as there are many types of doors, there are many different signs for doors. Your observation that, "It looked like it could mean door..." is EXACTLY how it happens. We consider the nature of the door and then we demonstrate that shape, location, size, and movement with one or both hands.

the sign for dryer is that referring to a clothes dryer or a hair dryer? Or can it be used for both?
@sign-language3 жыл бұрын
The general sign for DRY can be combined with a sign meaning "spin" to create the meaning of "a clothes dryer." DRY-SPIN = a clothes dryer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqSmeHyobrl3mKc If you do the DRY sign twice, rapidly as in: DRY-DRY -- it can (in context) mean a clothes dryer or (again, depending on context) it can mean something like a fruit dryer. DRY-DRY: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXeWfJSqg5iHnbc For hair dryer see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpunY5h6f8h6mtk Note: It has been a very, very long time since I've used a hairdryer -- but I'm pretty sure I can still do the sign fairly well. Also see: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/d/dryer.htm For the hairdryer sign see Lesson 28: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lesson28.htm

the sign hang up is that the same for hanging up a phone?
@sign-language3 жыл бұрын
The X hand & Index finger version of "hang up" means to hang up a clothes hanger or to put something onto a peg. For example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2KupnqXhtCCfNU To hang up a phone you mime the action. Traditionally it was: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmibYXp5mKqnjZI These days with a smart phone if you have a lot of context you can depict clicking the hang up button: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m57KfmiejJpjopY and maybe mime putting it in your pocket or purse or wherever you keep it. Those of us who use a remote controller and a video phone sometimes hang up like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqCWqauEmKlno9E Or to make the hang up concept very clear you can sign "click on, disconnect": kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHW8ZYZ5ls2of9U Another sign that works quite well is the one-handed "OFF, shut down, power off, closed out" sign. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ-kaKZ6qZx-Y9k Warm regards, + Dr. Bill

There is no lack of Facebook groups for learning sign. The challenge is to find a "friendly" group that is well-moderated and stays on topic. Here is a group to which you have to apply, read the rules, answer some question -- and be accepted into: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/ The benefit? A relatively safe, supportive environment to supplement your online learning of ASL.
@xxshevilxx6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to guess another reason Deaf people hang out in kitchens is they don't hear all the echos that the hard kitchen surfaces can produce. A crowd din can build up fast in a kitchen, compared to a living room with all carpet and soft furniture to absorb the sound. Usually art on the walls to, rather than flat cabinets.
@sign-language6 жыл бұрын
The reason why "kitchens" are a popular hang out area for us Deaf folks is because the lighting is generally better. The point here is that "good lighting" is valued in the Deaf Community.
@xxshevilxx6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you're right, I was just pointing out something that you might not have considered. If you heard the din, you'd avoid using it as a conversation place. Perhaps it's more why hearing people don't congregate there? :)
@sign-language6 жыл бұрын
Ah, got it. I see your point. Indeed, "cafeterias" are one of the "worst" places for a "hard of hearing" person to try to hold a conversation with a Hearing (speaking) person. The poor acoustics render hearing-aids useless or worse -- painful. Very unpleasant.

what does that mean? "deaf prefer kitchen, why?" i don't understand
@sign-language8 жыл бұрын
To understand some of the topics in the video it helps to do the lesson over at Lifeprint.com first. The question regarding, "Why is it that Deaf people prefer (to hang out in) the kitchen?" has to do with the fact that there is generally better lighting in the kitchen. Good lighting is important in the Deaf world. Thus this is an example of "Deaf Culture."
@thegifted_10157 жыл бұрын
depends on the type of lights i'm half deaf and one ear is completely gone.been this way all my life lost my hearing twice. ive grown to understand a great balance in and between both worlds. light settings are important cause our eyes play a big role in understanding the difference in certain sounds compared with an object for those who have little to some hearing through out life. so im in a battle between both worlds the deaf and the hearing. spinning lights a quick tip to vertigo island unless your inner ear balance is on key. thats where light settings are important to deaf people. darkness theres so little balance.light settings also helps deaf to under stand what they see it helps the brain communicate with the inner ear balance. shaded areas can be a bit tripy/sudden eye movements when the head move too fast some deaf people get dizzy thats why our eyes and light also helps the deaf inner balance it has to fight constantly to stay on point to understand nothing is spinning some much more lol etc

It is implied. Similar to English. If you say, "Have you ever had to call and ambulance?" The assumption is that it came and picked someone up and took them to the hospital. Or have you ever had ice cream? The assumption is that you ate it rather than just possessed it for a while.
