I can tell this is not a dog for everyone because of their power to do good and bad things, in wrong hands this can become a huge problem for the dog because we all know how it ends. From someone that understand how to raise dog, i must say im impressed with how fast they learn and how "good boys" they are.

I think that the title could benefit from being redone. I think it should read "American Staffordshire - the Show Pit Bull". Using the term "civilized" almost makes it sound as if the American Pit Bull is a savage breed with a bad temperament when that could not be further from the truth. I know that the uploader knows the American Pit Bull is a great breed and did not mean it like that, but using the term "civilized" here could send the wrong message to viewers. The American Pit Bull is a quite noble breed which retained its status as a working dog (farming, hunting, baiting, and fighting purposes mainly which are the things they were created for) and is responsible for the American Staffordshire being all that it is as far as temperament, personality, and, to an extent, ability. Actually, most of what I am hearing (aside from some of the medical conditions) are very similar to the American Pit Bull. Also, she said "temperament first and health second." I must strongly disagree with this. I understand that the American Staffordshire is more of show/conformation breed and that health would be less of (still important but not more so) a factor as it would be for the working American Pit Bull breed, but I believe that health should come before anything else. Truthfully I don't think that anyone should try and put a number on health and temperament. They should both be extremely important and equally important (one should not be sacrificed for the other or prized over the other). However, if someone does try to put those by terms of importance, I would imagine that, for most, it would be health first and then temperament. No matter what, a dog needs to be healthy. Temperament doesn't do much good if the dog is not physically stable enough to do its job, fill its role, or live a full life. That is one reason for some of the problems that can occur in some breeds. People are not paying much attention to or putting importance in health. In many of these cases, health takes a backseat to other much less important things such as looks, size, etc.

buba2isatosa Many, including the uploader and the breeder being interviewed in this video, say they are separate breeds. But it is a debatable and controversial topic with both sides giving valid arguments. With the American Pit Bull and the American Staffordshire Terrier, it seems to be more about the point of view of the person you ask.
@buba2isatosa8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Cares The only way they are seperate is from outside breeds being introduced. If they were bred to the set standard they would be identical! 80 years is not enough time to create a new breed period! Working and show Neo's look nothing like eachother and have been bred that way 3 times as long as AST many other breeds have show and working lines but you don't see them changing names!

Hey Lydia, I know your vid is a couple of years old, but I had to send you a note in thanks for your video. Because of you, I went ahead and did a rescue on an Am Staff that was within 2 weeks of a death sentence. He is 3 y/o Blue w/hazel eyes, and he is absolutely the best!!! His temperament is everything you said this breed is. My Queensland Heeler just passed and I wanted a breed that is just as or close to as loyal as the heeler, but I wanted something a little more protective of my property, and most importantly something that doesn't shed like a heeler. I have been blessed to find a beautiful male that I named Lando, and he has already been truly amazing. Thank you again for your vid, and I look forward to learning more from you and possibly introducing you to my new kid!!!

We got ours from a "no kill" shelter. She initially would flinch when we tried to pet her on the head ( evidence of abuse) Now a year later, she has learned trust again. One thing I have noticed is how easy to train she is. SCRAT ( her name) wants to please. Once she understood what we wanted her to do ( sit, stay, come fetch etc etc) she would do it just for a " good girl" and a scratch behind the ears.

Ear cropping is cruel. I have yet to hear of a dog being euthanized because he has floppy ears. Cropping and docking are cosmetic procedures, plain and simple. Crops and docks are illegal throughout much of Europe because it is considered cruel to cut off a dogs body parts to please our idea of what is “beautiful.” Elective surgery for dogs: It may sound odd, but it’s exactly what some purebreds undergo shortly after birth. Cropping -- cutting off the floppy part of a dog’s ear -- is usually performed on anesthetized dogs between 6 and 12 weeks old. The ears are then taped to a hard surface for several weeks while they heal so they stay upright. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says the practices are “integral to defining and preserving breed character” in certain breeds. But the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) opposes docking and cropping. The most common reason for cropping and docking is to give a dog a certain look. That means it poses unnecessary risks. I am against the practice of docking tails and cropping ears, and I am not alone.

Now I have an OEB and absolutely love him but I still miss my AmStaffs, they definitely have a special place in my heart.

She talks Bollocks.. No such thing as a American staff.. It comes from england.. All you yanks have done is relabled the breed.. Staffordshire is in England.. Infact most of the u.s. dogs are from Europe.. Relabling them doesnt really make them a new breed.

The woman next door has a american staffy it has'nt been out of her yard since she got it ( over a yr ago ) I had a talk to her about it and said she need to at least take the dog for a walk , and she said she cant walk him as he pulls on her arm too much and hurts her.I said maybe she would be better off re homing the dog where he has a better quality of life ? she said no , no I love him , and I said you can't even handle a dog like that and she has 3 young kids , one of which is scared of him as he knocks him over .she said the dog actually belongs to her eldest son ( he's about 14 ) no dog knowledge what so ever , and he cant walk him either . I said the dog cries for attention when they are out the front and he is locked in the back yard I said tell your son I will report him if he does'nt start to care for the dog and she went off her nut LOL oh your going to report me for not walking my dog , blah blah , I have a bad back and walk and train with my german shepherd daily even if it is a short walk but I keep the dog busy . the next night I saw the kaos out front as she was trying to walk her dog while one of her kids was up the street chasing her other dog ( a shitzu ) that had bolted ,she had a harness on the staffy which clearly had no effect on where the dog wanted to go LOL when she returned from the walk i went to speak to her and while stood there the dog took off to her front door and burnt her hand and the lead as she was'nt expecting it to do that , if that dog had took off after a little kid witha little dog he would have knocked the kid over into the concrete. I never seems to amaze me how people get dogs they cannot handle and have no intention of learning how to , this dog is only 14 months now , give it another yr and he will be a dangerous dog as she can't even hold onto him now I just hope I'm not in the street with my dog when it happens as I've not long had a hip replacement I shudder to thnk what is going to happen in the future with this dog of hers.

I am about to rescue an American Staffordshire Terrier Mix tomorrow. She is lovely, sweet, non aggressive 1.5 year old and she got along nicely with my Basenji Terrier Mix in the play yard. After all the research however, I'm a little nervous about this dog. I do not understand the difference between a pit bull and this dog - I have read everything but still unsure of the reality. My Basenji likes to growl and play loudly with her mouth and tug of war with her toys - is this going to cause problems with the rescue Staffordshire? I just love her personality but worry that my energetic but very sweet and loving Basenji will bring out the worst? I also just learned I need to have her tested for this brain issue - what is that again and how bad is it? Does the dog need to be put down, does it go crazy? Again, not sure what my next step should be. Thanks for any help and insight.

Wtf are you talking about? Play growls do not provoke dog aggression in socialized dogs. But I see you wrote this BS a long time ago... Wonder what happened to your dog.

Should be called... American Staffordshire Terriers- NOT a Pit Bull. as they are different breeds...
@bambam234067 жыл бұрын
Bareknuckle Hog Dogs pit bull is not a breed so you are incorrect there are Apbt ,am-staffs,Staffordshire bull terrier , and American bullys which are thrown in that group name along with some bull dogs and even some mastiffs like the presa but the amstaffs is the closest relative to the Apbt out of them they just breed the size into them with less gameness
@AnakinGroundcrawler6 жыл бұрын
You should do a little research. They are, in fact, pit bulls.

Great breed. My parents had a male named Benjamin (Benson and Benny were nicknames of his) when I was a kid and he was such a great dog. Friendly yet protective over his family. Absolutely refused to sleep alone and we would often find that he'd crawl into our other dogs bed for a snuggle. He was around for a good 17/18 years and was pretty lucky with his hips and joints. Though sadly he was diagnosed with a tumor in his brain and at his old age decided it was best to have him humanely put down.

Am Staff is one of several breeds commonly known as Pit bulls, Pit bull is a category or term that describes several 'bully' dogs breeds. American pit bull terrier are also in this category of course.

pit man Dead right. American Staffordshire Terrier is absolutely part of the pit bull family classification. The head shape and muscular body is clearly in the same class. It's so easy to spot a pit bull type dog classification based on its head shape.
@pitman29117 жыл бұрын
MultiSilversalmon Bullies, Amstaff have evolved from the true AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER, but should never be called a pitbull .APBT is a different breed .The gaint pitbull they call Hulk is crossed between a French mastiff x pitbull they call it pitbull. Thats wrong .like the Master Of All Bulldogs said in his Videos you cant cross a zeedra with a horse and call it a horse

Im considering adopting a male American Staffordshire Terrier Mix at our local shelter he's a 2years old he's soooo adorable. But i do have two kids 9 and 4 so iam on here looking for some tips on these types of dogs. I have had a small Maltese but he died 10 years ago so now i would totally look into a male active dog that i can go on walks with and give him all the love he deserves.thanks for sharing this video
