We rebelled against the British, in large part due to taxes. So we take taxes very seriously. We want to know exactly how much we are being taxed. If you just include it in the final price, we would never know how much the government taxes us. As for the vendor it's not that hard, taxes change once a year at most, usually longer. They just input the new percentage into a computer program and it does all the calculations.

Haha the alcohol thing... here in Sweden we have only one specific store that sells alcohol, and they're not open for very long (I think until 6 or 7 in the evening) and not on Sundays. You literally can't find alcohol in any other store. It always surprises me when I see proper alcohol like wine and spirits in grocery stores abroad. It feels so wrong because I'm used to it only being in one store.

Really? That's exactly how it used to be in the US Southern states! But now we can buy alcohol like beer & wine at the grocery store, but you still have to purchase liquor at a different store, and there aren't many liquor stores around. Same in the state where I live in the U.S. You have to go to a liquor store to buy beer or wine. But our liquor stores are generally open until fairly late (9 or 10 p.m.). The county where I live now has no restrictions about selling alcohol on Sundays, but I used to live in a county where the liquor stores were closed on Sunday. If you wanted beer that day (and I sometimes did) you could only buy it as a "package" sale (i.e. take-out) over the counter at a bar.

@@bodyofhope Yep, it's basically a remnant from our prohibition period. We were all drunkards 100 years ago or so, so the government put a stop to it by making a monopoly on it. So all alcohol is still sold only by the government and it's pretty strict to this day, which is both good and bad according to different people.

To be clear, in the U.S. there are outdoor cafes and beer gardens where you can drink alcohol. As long as you are on the property of the restaurant serving it, that's fine. What you cannot usually do is to walk around in public with an open container (bottle or glass) of beer or wine, etc. The open-container laws are pretty common, but all alcoholic beverage laws vary by state or even by county within each state. In some places, you can buy beer and wine in grocery stores, and other places you can't. Some states only allow hard liquor to be sold in state-operated stores. Some states don't allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays. Some counties are completely "dry" -- alcohol cannot be sold at all. But even in dry counties you can often bring your own bottle to drink at a restaurant.

@@yasminesteinbauer8565 Yes, you can drink outside at your house and anywhere on your own property. And because a lot of houses in the U.S. (although not all by any means) have a little bit of yard (what the Brits call a "garden"), this is commonly done. It's pretty common to have a fire pit for campfires in your back yard. Some people also have a pool (less common). You have friends and neighbors over for a cook-out, and you can then sit around the fire with some beers or a couple of bottles of wine to share. We do that as long as the weather allows.

To clarify, pain medication like Vicoden or Percocet, has to be prescribed by a doctor in the US. These days, physicians don't prescribe it too willingly. Even after surgery or a broken bone, you may not receive pain medication while you heal. They used to prescribe it too often, and now they've gone way too far in the opposite direction so that pain isn't being controlled humanely in the US. It has been an issue of concern the last 5-7 yrs. We have mild medications like Aspirin, Tylenol and Advil (acetaminophen and ibuprofen) to purchase without a prescription, but most medicines require a visit to the doctor and a prescription.

Tips and wages for servers aren't well understood if you've never done it. In the US, states set different minimum wage levels, but they all must pay their employees that wage. However, if their workers get tips for service, then part of that wage can be tips, that is, the employer gets a credit. Example, in my state, the minimum wage is 7.25, but the minimum cash wage is 2.13. So the restaurant must pay 2.13, and then tips make up the rest of the wage. If the amount of tips is small, like an average of 5.25 for that shift, then the restaurant has to make up the difference. If the average hourly wage with the tips is more, like say 10.25, then the server gets to keep that extra. So it's not true that servers get less than minimum wage. But they can make more if they do a good job, which is why servers in the US are usually very motivated to be helpful and nice. People from Europe I've worked with are initially overwhelmed about how they constantly keep coming to your table!

The U.S. has a huge separate state mentality. There is federal law enforcement, state has their own, county/parish have their own, then city/township have their own. Marijuana is illegal in some states, and legal in others. There is a federal tax % for the country, a different state tax % for each, a different county/parish tax for each, then cities and townships have their tax %. So, the same $10,000 car in one city could cost $10,500 there, and $11,000 in the next city nearby.

The reason tax is not included in the price of items is because tax and whether or not an item is even taxed to begin with changes based on the state, locality, and item… sometimes even based off the price of an item. It would be impossible for companies to price items with tax included because every single state and even different cities within a state would have different prices. It would make labeling and marketing a nightmare. Taxes can also be state or town/county specific. For instance, here in NYC clothing & shoes are not taxed unless a single article of clothing or pair of shoes is $110 or greater. So a $60 sweater will be $60 but a $110 sweater will be $110 plus 8.5% (state and local tax). PS: Christina is right, generally speaking in the US necessity items like basic grocery items, clothes, etc. are not taxed. These vary by state and some states have no sales tax at all!

Okay, okay Let’s clear up a possibility of confusion here! In some states, drinking in public may be illegal but it doesn’t have to be covered. Example, in Wyoming it doesn’t have to be covered, mostly since all the kids have already seen alcohol and it hasn’t proven to harm anyone if they *see* it. Also, taxes on groceries can vary. Some states do have a tax on things like food, whereas Wyoming doesn’t. Other groceries have a tax.

Then paying for insurance for the baby is outrageous. I live in Texas so we aren't able to buy beer or wine from the store until 7 AM then a certain time at night (can't remember) Monday-Saturday. Then 10 AM on Sundays. We don't have liquor in the grocery store. There is a totally separate store just for alcohol that is open 10 AM-9 PM. You can be standing in line at 8:59 to pay but once it hits 9 you can't purchase it even if you're next in line. Or atleast that's what has happened to me and others before. Healthcare in the US is a meme, but it is so complex that it can't be boiled down to a video. Insurance is a big reason for this - different coverage choices change what you pay when. Most health care providers also charge more because most people will just pay anything through their insurance and never know how much it actually costs, but those same providers will almost always reduce your bill by 1/2 or more if they know you'll be paying out of pocket. Another thing not mentioned here but often forgotten is that you can't be turned away from emergency care (or reduced in priority) regardless of your ability to pay.

the reason taxes aren't included in the sticker price is because sales taxes and, if applicable, excise taxes vary by state, and sometimes also county and municipality. and, yes, because these taxes are assessed based on where the purchase happens, you can reduce or eliminate the tax you pay by traveling to a different jurisdiction. Delaware famously doesn't have sales tax, so people from southeastern PA and south Jersey and eastern Maryland will go there for big ticket items, such as appliances.

It's exactly the same in Europe actually. Most of the products are made in the same factories for several countries BUT the taxes are included in the price. Moreover In don't understand the issue with sticker price as I think every store is free to choose it's own price on every item so then the price doesn't only vary from state to state but from store to store. The last thing you mentioned.os also very common in Europe, I know at least French people crossing the border to fill up their gas tank in Spain or to buy cigarettes in Andorra as both of them are very expensive because of being highly taxed here.

A Walmart in one location is required to sell the product for the same price as the Walmart ten miles down the road, but the taxes can be vastly different. Many products have prices printed on the packaging that retailers are required to sell it for. Trying to account for literally thousands of different tax rates within a single state would be insane, not to mention for interstate and national items. Combine this with the fact that some tax laws require the consumer specifically to pay an amount based on the sticker price - the retailer cannot pay it, and it cannot, by law, be included in the sticker price. Don't mess with governments' money, and when governments overlap it's best to keep things basic and add it on.

 @Noé Fillon Also, the price stickers on the shelves also tend to be regulated by various consumer protection laws. Do you include taxes in the price per ounce calculations required for comparing items in some places? This goes down a major rabbit hole network made by thousands of rabbits who don't acknowledge any other rabbits exist.

Non Americans, Christina is from Massachusetts. Our country is the United STATES of America and sales tax laws and percentages vary by state. I grew up in a state that didn’t tax grocery store food but then I moved to a state that does. So not all the same. And sometimes a city will ask the state for permission to add it’s own sales tax on top of the state sales tax. So if you buy a Burger king Whooper in city A it might be taxed at 9% per $1 but city B same burger is 7% per $1. 99 percent of the time I couldn’t care less about sales taxes because I rarely use cash. However I got screwed into having to pay sales tax twice on the same purchase because I live in one state and purchased a vehicle in another state. I paid tax when I bought it then when I went to register my vehicle my home state made me pay taxes again to them. I think the car dealerships lobbied for this law to dissuade people from buying out of state.

Texas does not have state tax on vehicle purchases, but Louisiana does. I know what you mean with FL taxes on a new motorcycle, then LA had their hand out for their registration taxes on a depreciated value of the same motorcycle. Don't get me started with paying state sales tax on a $10,000 piece of equipment for a business, then paying state property tax yearly on that same piece of equipment.

One guy in McDonald’s in the US gets maybe 15-20$ per day when the same job in Germany or anywhere else in Europe gets your at least the 750-800€ per month. In Europe it’s not mandatory to tip because they employ gets his money from his salary. His wage doesn’t depend on our tips… But, most of the times we tip them the change. If we have to pay 27.70€ we will give 30€ for example. And he’s gonna keep the change. At least, that’s what we are doing in Hellas🇬🇷 It’s not mandatory to tip him but 99/100 times we tip. That thing in America it’s like a blackmail to the customer! If you don’t tip he’s not gonna have money… But, wait, you hired him so it’s your job to pay him enough to make it! And if for some reason I don’t make enough money that day (don’t meet the hourly minimum wage made in tips) then my job just pays me the minimum wage that day. I love it bc it gives me an opportunity to make more money with the tips.

@@LCdic09 in Europe there is not this paid per hour (in some jobs there is!) If you are hired you must be paid at least with the minimum wage which provides you quite enough money! Even in Hellas that our economy is pretty f** up the minimum wage is 650-700€ Getting paid 15$ per hour and demand from someone to tip you… makes no sense since you are already paid to do this job. But of course, as I’ve said we give the change to the waiter or the employee. Because we kinda want to show him that we are thankful for the service not because we feel sorry about him and if we don’t tip him he’s gonna have less money. This is like blackmailing the customers! Things are weird in America…

That happens in my country which has not the best economy in Europe… I reckon things could be much better in countries like Norway, Switzerland, Germany, UK… etc Yes, I’m Hellene (Greek is not correct btw). Things are getting worst and worst here because the Government supposed to help the people, sometimes they give us more money and then we have to pay more and more taxes…

@@Kolious_Thrace You shouldn’t talk about US when you do not know anything about it. In US, McDonald workers do not ask for tips nor will most of the people top them. Their pay will range from state to state and they are not paid below minimum wage. So when done calculations with $13 per hour and 40 hours a week it will be around $2000 which is very less but not what you said. The waitress or servers who work for tip will always out earn minimum wage. People do give lots of tip and those servers will make lot compared to fast food workers (From my experience of talking with those workers).

In Germany you tip as well, but there is no must. It usally applies to waiters, taxi drivers, hair dresser, ... it is more an appreciation of personal service: so if food or drinks are brought to your table you would tip. If you get street food to take away or you have to carry your drinks by your own from a bar, you wouldn't tip. The golden rule would be 10% ... with a taxi driver you would just round up ... and hair dresser gets some extra coins or bill, which she or he can keep by herself.

The reason for the tax issue is because taxes change everywhere you go. There are federal taxes, state taxes, county taxes and even city taxes. Some states have no sales tax at all, but compensate by higher property or income taxes. The point being that this way the base price will be the consistent, but the tax calculation is done at the register. Often time you can buy the same item at 2 different stores at the same base price, but being in different locations changes what the taxes are. For most places that I have lived across the US however, the sales taxes usually average to about 10%, which as far as I know is actually significantly less than the average VAT in Europe.

But you can drink or carry it in public except some places (Bus, School, etc). What strictly prohibited is Advertise or Promotion. You can put name of Beer/Whisky on the Menu with prices but not any Photos. Any photos considered advertising. So the distiller also sale Plain water or Soda using the same Brand. And then they can put Logo on the menu instead of the Beer photo. Singha/Leo/Chang Water/Soda exists for that reason.

@@HomeWorkouts_LS Yeah, but this is also why tax is not included in the price of items… because tax and whether or not an item is even taxed to begin with changes based on the state, locality, and item… sometimes even the price of an item. It would be impossible for companies to price items with tax included because every single state and even different cities within a state would have different prices. Taxes can also be state or town/county specific. For instance, here in NYC an article of clothing or shoes are not taxed unless a single article of clothing or out of shoes is $110 or greater. So a $60 sweater will be $60 but a $110 sweater will be $110 plus 8.5%.

The reason why waiters have such low wages is precisely _because_ of tipping. The employers treat the tip as part of the wage instead of correctly viewing it as extra. As such, the system is set up to where patrons, even unwittingly, are expected to be responsible for their waiter's paycheck.
@scottdean2199
@scottdean2199 2 жыл бұрын
Patrons are always responsible for the wait staff's paycheck. Some would rather have all of it included in the prices on the menu, and some prefer to subsidize it through tips. There are pros and cons to both. Most good wait staff prefer tips to a higher base wage because they can make a lot more money, especially at high-end restaurants. One of my friends was a waitress at a very nice restaurant when I worked as a senior customer service rep for a wireless company. Her wage was about 1/4 what I made (which was rather high for the industry at the time), but she brought home three times what I did. She also brought home twice what some of her coworkers made because she was really good at her job.

@scottdean2199 2 жыл бұрын
@@r0bw00d Not sure what you're getting at. Patrons are ALWAYS responsible for everyone's paycheck that works in a restaurant - they are the ones who pay for everything. You always pay most through the menu cost. In the US, tips are part of the cost of dining out. Like I said, there are pros and cons to both tipping and higher base wages, but most good wait staff prefer tipping over a higher wage. Determining employee pay is not the manager's responsibility, nor is it even within their permission in most restaurants. Pay is normally negotiated by the owner. If it is a chain, then the General Manager (who acts in lieu of the owner for that location) may have some leeway but usually still has to follow specific pay guidelines from the owners/corporate. Most people in the US are willing to pay more for better service. Higher wages will be reflected in higher menu prices. Ideally, the higher menu prices will average to what you would otherwise pay with an average tip. If the server is particularly good, they are not rewarded and will typically leave for better opportunities. If the server id bad, people stop going to the restaurant at all because they aren't willing to pay that higher price for bad service, then everyone loses. I've seen this happen in places where the restaurant decided to pool tips and divide the money between all wait staff based on hours worked. It was supposed to help those working less lucrative shifts and make it "fair". Good wait staff just left.
