I think Nele meant "Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz" which was an actual law we used to have which made it the longest official word in our language (though in theory every German speaker can create infinite compound words for anything on the spot due to how our language works, though since they get hard to understand we usually stop after three or four meanings. This one translates to the law (-gesetz) of the transfer (-übertragung + -s-) of tasks (-aufgaben-) of the monitoring (-überwachung + -s-) of the labeling (-ettiketierung + -s-) of flesh (-fleisch) of cattle (Rind-).

I work in German citizenship law, and my favorite German word will always be Staatsangehörigkeitsfeststellungsverfahren because it is also ridiculously long and I use it on a daily basis 😀

Das Gesetz zum Schutz des deutschen Blutes und der Ehre, welches leider 1954 wenn ich mich recht entsinne, von den alliierten Gerichten abgesetzt wurde, sei ein viel wichtigerer Ausdruck. Das Reichsflaggengesetz ist ebenfalls mit einigen Abänderungen völlig in Ordnung, wir sollten die alten Kaiserlichen Farben zurückbringen. Nur das Reichsbürgergesetz würde ich nicht wiedereinführen. All I know is that fleische = flesh (meat), tiket = ticket, tier = animal (cognate of the English word deer, which originally meant animal). So something with labeling your animal meat?

@@lissandrafreljord7913 Yes it goes into that direction. Its basically a law from 1999 that is linked to the beef industry because they had problems with a sickness that was spreading so they needed special rules to label the meat.

Rindfleisch = beef Ekettierung = labeling Überwachung = supervision Aufgabe = duty Übertragung = transfer Gesetz = law So this word basically means "Beef Labeling Supervision Duties Transfer Act". This was a valid law for who was responsible for supervising the duty of labeling of beef. It was established on December 15th 1999 and was dismissed on May 29th 2013. It also was also an official word and existed in the official german dictionary "Duden" during this time period.

I knew Eichhörnchen was squirrel because I remember watching a video where English speakers try to understand Dutch, and the word for squirrel in Dutch was eekhoorn, which apparently is related to the English word acorn. In Old English, the word for squirrel was æcern. The current word for squirrel in English came from, no surprise, Old French esquireul, which in turn came from Latin sciurus, which in turn came from Greek skiouros.

People usually say otorrinolaringología is one of the longest... it comes from greek roots for ear/nose/throat/science But the longest in spanish is electroencefalografista (EEG operator - electroencephalographic technologist) which is even longer in English because they didn't convert "ph" into "f". The 2nd longest is esternocleidomastoideo (sternocleidomastoid): the muscle in the neck that joins breastbone, collarbone and jawbone.

A tip for the umlauts, if you're struggling with the pronounciation: pretend there is an 'e' in place of the umlaut (or 'i' in case o the ü), it'll make you sound a bit yiddish or czech but you will be understood way better.

@@Valariot I figured it had to be related when I saw it especially as it is not uncommon for animal names to be at least partially derived from some aspect of their appearance, habitat or behaviour. I hadn't realised the name for the tree was also similar unlike in English so it could be a reference to the habitat too since that would make an oak forest where one might find many squirrels an Eichenwald is that right? I'm not sure if that is the right plural form there especially as I'm guessing from Dutch here but it feels like it would be right.

About Scheiße: I don't know if it's related or not but in Portuguese we have the word "chiça", which basically means the same as Scheiße. The sources I found mention a probable but never confirmed German origin. The resemblance is very strong, though.

the word Scheiße is related with the english word shit i think in north german dialects of low german its scheet or Something like that im not sure the t changed to s or z(ts) in high german for example better=besser ,to=zu and in English exist next to shit also shite is pronounced like Scheiß but with an t. I actually have a lot of "streifenhoernchens" in my yard. I'd rather have more "eichhoernchens", but the trees are still in the process of growing big enough to accomodate them. My instinct when reading German is when two vowels are next to each other, pronounce the second vowel, although, if it's similar to English, there are probably random exceptions which a person has no way of knowing off the top of their head.
