Jack Daniels is a "sour mash" whisky; filtered through maple wood charcoal and aged in charred oak barrels.That is why is has a slightly sweeter after taste. Scotch is amazing in its own right,but not made with a mash and I believe the fermentation process is longer and the aging process is in a different wood. Anyone care to let us know about that?

Matt H Black Label is single malt, which is usually more strongly flavored than Red Label, which is a blended Scotch, but, if like me, you like the peaty flavour of Scotch more flavour is better. Blue Label, if I am not mistaken, is blended, but from very specially selected casks, it is a lot more expensive, but if you can afford it, it is definitely worth a try. Black Label is only a little more expensive, so it's a good compromise, and, I think, a better expression of real Scottish whiskey. I find Jim too sweet, but Bulleit is good stuff, and they also make a very nice Rye.

not really, it all depends on the person drinking. Typically a proper vodka should be smooth but we all know Russians and Polish don't care about smooth they just want to get drunk so of course you'll shiver after a real russian vodka or polish one. Same for everclear or moonshine in the US

Well good scotch will be 43-46% ABV and a legal minimum of 40%, rather than the 37% ABV typical of American bourbon. It's also typically aged longer at 10-12 years as opposed to the 4-5 years normally seen for bourbon. It's not so much the "well distilled" thing either, it's more that scotch has a higher percentage of malt and doesn't use corn mash which imparts more sweetness and less flavour, so there's a bunch of things, really. Personally I find American whiskey to be much harsher when drinking because of the semi-combusted compounds from the fresh charred barrels. Scotch uses second hand casks so you get more influence from the wood itself rather than just the char. For me the harshness is not really about the alcohol percentage, although a higher percentage will tend to indicate a stronger flavour, whatever flavour that may be, since it shows there has been less dilution going from cask to bottle.

The types of barrels the whiskey is aged in, and the aging length, determines the strength of the whiskey. Jack Daniels is pretty strong, but Jim Beam goes down smoother. Bullett, would like to try that one.

I thought the same thing. But the water is pretty muddy when it comes to bourbon (differentiating it from whiskey). Some people say it shouldn’t even be called whisky if it’s real bourbon, because it’s so different. But then again, some brands are just normal whiskey and call it bourbon because it’s from Kentucky. 🤷‍♂️

This really comes down to personal taste. I grew up in America with jack daniels being the go to when someone mentions whiskey but i prefer scotch and Irish whiskeys over bourbon or rye whiskies.
