American Wonders: The "Field of Light"

"CBS This Morning" is launching a new series called “American Wonders.” From majestic natural landscapes to spectacular creations, we’ll explore places that make America wonderful. Set in a hillside in the central California city of Paso Robles is the “Field of Light.” The field is 15 acres, filled with tiny light bulbs of vibrant colors. The art installation comes alive for visitors only when it’s dark outside. Jamie Yuccas reports.

The fields of lights are beautiful and soothes to the chill out music. I am a big music fan from living in California with a lot of the new wave / synthpop music music for the fields of lights by Bruce Munro and I loved the shoegaze music from the U.K. . I was growing up in Agoura Hills in outside of L.A. and I am a big music fan. I grew up KROQ music back in the 1980’s to 1990’s. I don’t like really old rock and roll. I loved the new wave artist from the U.K. and also the shoegaze music while I grew up with the radio stations in L. A. .

Very, very beautiful. But, do we need to lose any more of the night? Light pollution has taken away the view of the night sky, which is truly spectacular.

This area of Paso Robles and the Central California Coast is quite rural and the sky is literally pitch black except for stars. My sense is the lights are not ultra twinkling Christmas lights bright because they are not individual LED lights - they are ends of fiber optic glass light pipes from a number of central light sources. The lights have a small globe at the end which helps diffuse and spread the light over the surface of the bulb, making the light softer, subtle, and more diffuse. Because they are placed along the soft rolling hills, the lights accent and follow the texture and topography of the land in a different way then when you see it during the day, or with just grass, trees and dirt. IMO, it invites us to see our world from a different perspective, something that we all can use to expand our thinking and appreciation of beauty, art, and the world around us. I’m planning to see this next time I’m in that area, hopefully sometime in 2021. Hope you will too.
