Cool questions and answers. Yes, prog rock and other genres can get a bit confusing and even silly... In the long run it's all just music. Yes, that Eddie Vedder album is amazing!

Excited for this one! A genre I know so little about, but can certainly appreciate hearing the perspective from fans of what I might want to check out. You're right about the term - sort of like Canadiana could be put on The Guess Who, Tragically Hip, even Barenaked Ladies or Rush

That Bela Fleck album is perfect for the banjo cover. The Seldom Scene record you showed is the only one I have but I do enjoy it and need to check out their other recordings. Lucinda Williams is my favorite Americana artist and Car Wheels is my favorite by her. I picked "I Will" as well but forgot to give Tony Furtado any credit. It's always good to see Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. Great duet pick although Alison Moorer is now Mrs. Carll. I have albums by three of your lesser known Americana artists. Great tag response.

Hi Glen. Americana to me was always Bob Dylan number one. Hank Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills, they all come to mind. A lot of people thought the Band was Americana when they came out even if they were Canadian.... Cheers.

You gave me a ton of recommendations here. I guess I'm not done buying music yet! Have you heard the South Memphis String Band? It's Alvin Youngblood Hart, Luther Dickinson and Jimbo Mathus. They've done two records, I think, and Home Sweet Home is my favourite. It's mostly guitar, banjo and mandolin, and very old-timey, blues focused. One of my relatively recent favourites is someone I never hear spoken about by anyone in the VC - Jake Xerxes Fussell. He's from Georgia, and plays a lot of traditional Southern folk songs, mostly finger-picking on a Telecaster in the Piedmont style. He's made four albums since 2015, and they're all great, especially the first three. Great video, and a great ending to a video about Americana - with a record with four Canadians on it!

We had the same choice for acoustic Beatles cover, it's just a beautiful song. I LOVE David Bromberg's music, IMO his version of Mr. Bojangles is definitive.

Some good stuff to plough through. I think the band ‘America’ would fit in there. Still love their first self titled album; ‘Never found the time’ especially, but loaded with other goodies. Not connected to the ‘Americana’ strand but you mentioned ‘Julia’; Ramsey Lewis does a really nice instrumental version on his album ‘’Plays The Beatles Songbook’. Worth checking out if you find the time.

@@GlenKellawayfromthebasement Hi Glen, is ‘has gotta be good’ an expression in Canada? Does it mean you have listened to it and liked it, or, taking its literal meaning, are you saying if it isn’t any good there may be serious repercussions for me wasting your time?

In my humble opinion the Americana genre started with the first album of The Band Ironic because four of the five members were your countrymen.

Hi Glen, very interesting what you said about prog rock, well which bands could be ranked in that ''category'', which not, etc...This is a genre i'm very into at the moment. Last summer i read that incredible book written by French author Aymeric Leroy which doesn't rightly begins in 1969 with the release of King Crimson's 1st album, but provides a thorough overview of who were already ''prog before the prog'' (prog-esque or prog-ish as Scot TheProgCorner always says), which mid-/late-60s bands paved the way for the next generation of bands who were going to popularize progressive rock from the early-70s on. As you said, Procol Harum and The Moody Blues have certainly played an important part in the emergence of the genre. I often mention in my videos other bands such as e.g., Family, The Strawbs et Fairport Convention who were IMHO massive sources of inspiration for all that generation to come (Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant,etc..) That being said, today's topic was Americana😊 when it comes to that genre, the one album that springs to my mind is ''The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark'', great entries, always interested to learn more about it, and i know you're a good banjo player, Julia is a beautiful Lennon song, cheers from Montréal

Since you love Ry Cooder, then I have to ask if you seen the 1986 movie 'CROSSROADS'? (Not the 2002 stupid one with Brittney Spears). The one staring Ralph Macchio and Joe Seneca. It's about a wannabe blues-guitar virtuoso finds an old blues player and hopes he can teach him a long-lost song by legendary musician Robert Johnson. I'm sure you'd love it. Ry Cooder wrote a lot of the music for it!
