You've absolutely made my day. I was hoping to see a Wheatfield video for the 159th, but especially excited to see you followed in the footsteps of the 9th Georgia. My ggg-grandfather was in Company G. He was wounded, captured, and sent to Fort Delaware. His service record says he was captured on the 3rd (not the 2nd). I'm wondering if maybe he went down in the Valley of Death, since the brigade fell back to The Wheatfield after their repulse and he ended up between the lines that night.

Idea for a future battlefield video, if you have never tried it. In this "Rose Woods and The Wheatfiel"' video, the camera operator walked (silently) through the tree's in a point-of-view (POV) shot. How about doing POV videos at the speed of a real soldier, with narration about what that soldier might have been experiencing in the real battle? The camera becomes the eyes of a soldier, hiding behind obstacles, stopping to "fire" a volley, etc., so we get a realistic sense of how quickly, or slowly, soldiers moved around during that specific battle. Other guides can be in the POV shot, adding their on-camera perspectives (or talking to the "soldier) as the camera moves. Feature "battles" that were fought in an hour or less, or an important part of a battle, for interesting videos.

I think this is an excellent idea. Trust me when I say I am a complete novice on this battle (or any civil war battles), but the last couple of years I've been drilling in to Gettysburg after discovering at least one of my relatives had participated. I tried to understand the broad brushes of the battle, but was difficult with so many moving parts and names and times and etc. It did start to sink in a little, but still was a challenge. This year I started drilling down to this one specific relative and his time in the battle... where was he at, when was he there, who did he fight, who was commanding (at Co, Reg, Brigade, etc), how did battle progress, where he moved, etc etc. It all started making sense, and the larger strokes of the battle started falling in place as I had a bit more perspective. Just my experience in trying to learn and understand all of this. After I get comfortable with his experience, I intend to locate other relatives that were in this battle and do the same, and then branch out to other battles and do those as well. Get a better understanding of their real soldier experience and roll that up to the broader strokes of the battle.

I thought things were finished for this year as well so this was a pleasant surprise... especially for the area covered as I had a relative in this mix as well on the Union side. Naum Apgar, 110th PA CoB under Jones & Rogers / de Trobriand / Birney / Sickles. He very well could have fought on that exact ground that you walked in this video.... he sure was right in that area on July 2.

I reenact with the 4th US Infantry out in Washington State. Our unit was part of the Regulars Division at Plum Run, in the Valley of Death between Devil's Den and the Round Tops. We delayed Hood's advance to the extent that the rest of 5th Corps could occupy LRT and link with the Center on Cemetery Ridge. One of the State volunteers in 5th Corps is alleged to have said, "The Regulars have spent two years teaching us how to be soldiers, but today they taught us to die like men." I REALLY wish I could find out who said that. I spent a week at the 150th trying to find the author of the quote, but no luck.

I was just there last week. Check yourself for ticks. I was only at the edge of the wheatfield at the wayside marker and within the next few days, I pulled 5 ticks off of me. I don't know how they hid on my body each time I had my husband search for them.

Did I see a U.S. 5th Corp monument to the right of, and behind, Mr. Ullman as he reads from the book? At 4:19 of the video there's a good shot of what I refer to. My guess is that the monument is for either Col. Jacob Schweitzer or Col. William Tilton, who must have been split off of the 5th Corps while its remaining portion went to Little Round Top. ???
