Great work gents! These videos and explanations are top-notch and absolute steak and potatoes for those hungry for evermore civil war nourishment. These narratives given on location make a big difference. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Enjoying these videos on the less-visited Port Hudson site. I've actually visited back some twenty or so years ago when my work took me to Baton Rouge for a few weeks. It looks like the battlefield is better interpreted than it was back then.

When doing living history for Baton Rouge school children back in early 90s, the brass would let me campout at night close to Fort Desperate. Yes, strange sounds and a few cold spots as I transversed the area. Pitch black dark. .

Great pair of videos on Port Hudson. This has always been presented as more of an after thought of the Vicksburg campaign and I am pleased to see that the site has been preserved and is available to visit as a park. My top priority is to visit Vicksburg NMP soon and I will be certain to include the Port Hudson park in our itinerary.

Yes, thankfully the battlefield and cemetery are in a rural area sandwiched between a couple industrial plants. The state has done a good job of preserving the battlefield. Though the Mississippi River has moved a bit from its location in 1863. It’s a cool place to visit, about 20 minutes north of downtown Baton Rouge.

So appreciative of the attention you're giving to Port Hudson. I always felt the defense of this garrison was epic and kind of a foreshadowing of the Pacific battles in WWII, where the climate was a deadly opponent for both sides. It's a delight to see the actual battlefield and I hope to make a journey to there and Vicksburg (with Mansfield along the way) in the next couple of years.

One of the few places that I haven't been and on my bucket list. Time is starting to run out though so hopefully can get out there in a few years.

In the 1990s I was stationed in Baton Rouge and lived in Zachary. I visited Port Hudson several times, and as an Army Ranger I looked at the terrain from both sides (terrain analysis). The museum wasn't there at the time, so I need to go back.

Interesting the site of the battles of Port Hudson will later be a fort and garrison for USCT troops to train form and some will be sent to Texas where Juneteenth and the final ACW battles occur! WOW

I work with a direct descendant of Marcus A. Hanna, who won a Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4th serving in Company B of the Mass. 50th Volunteer Infantry during this battle. Would love to find a way to figure out where precisely he was that day and see what it looks like now.

I am wondering if Abbay's Battery was the element of 1sr Miss. Lt. Artillery that was at Fort Desperate? Does anybody know?
@herecomesaregular8418 Жыл бұрын
If the Confederate Order of Battle is accurate for the Port Hudson siege, the two Mississippi batteries attached to Steedman's wing of the defenses (which the 15th Ark. and 1st Al. were attached to), would indeed be the 1st Miss. Light Art., and English's Miss. Battery. So it would likely be one of those two, or a combination of the two in this sector.
