I remember Brenda Lee on the radio when i was very young. Losing You is the song i remember best. Beautifully sung by her.

I got to sing with Brenda in December 1959 in Los Angeles at the private school we attended. I was in the 1st Grade and she in the 10th. The school put on an annual Christmas program and it featured Brenda singing her new hit Rockin Around the Christmas Tree. My class was asked to sing parts of the song and dance with her. What an amazing memory sixty-five years later! I think Brenda only was a student at the school a short time.

Walk into any store this time of year and you are likely to hear this holiday classic playing. Now, 67 years after its release, the song has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time (2022). That makes the song’s original performer, Brenda Lee one of the oldest artists ever to top the chart. Brenda Lee celebrated her 80th birthsay on December 11, 2024. The first woman to be inducted into both the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame, Brenda Lee was only 13 when she recorded her signature Christmas ditty, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Many hits would follow, including “I’m Sorry,” propelling her into global stardom. (The Beatles were her opening act in Hamburg, Germany, in 1962.)

I saw her perform in my hometown of Hagerstown, MD at the Maryland Theater in 1986. Brenda is really a small lady, but can belt out a song with the best of them.

"No one says, country artist Brenda Lee, or rock-n-roll star. She's just Brenda" - this seemed like an odd comment, then I realized how many artists are locked into a particular genre. Where I came from, the same artist would often do opera and twist, although not anymore I guess.
