Fun fact for all the Americans out there: New York used to be called New Amsterdam, but after the English took over, they named it after the Duke of York (and York is also a city in the UK). You can still see some remnants of the Dutch in New York: Harlem is named after the Dutch city of Haarlem, and Wall Street was originally "Waal straat", the name the Dutch gave it when they were there...

Fun fact for all the Americans out there: The Netherlands was the first nation to salute the the US flag and technically the first to recognize it in doing so (done by a captain without official government backing to do so) and the second the officially recognize the country. @@exploringtheforeign I sometimes see videos with street interviews in the USA and find that the people answering questions are kinda.. well, not very smart. Then I think: maybe they were nervous, because of the microphone under their nose, the camera, the questions they have to answer, all of a sudden. Who knows. Could be. I'd be, maybe. But sometimes I also, cynically, think those videos are rigged, like as if they only show the wrong answers, because that generates more buzz and thus more view(er)s. Question: Name a country that starts with the letter 'U'. Answer: U.. rope? That kind of things. Cutting out all the people who know how to say USA. Refreshing to see for once smart(er) Americans. Fun to see that woman joyfully playing with her ball every time she gets one right and even if she gets one wrong. Oh yes, and the gentlemen from the galaxy far far away. Darth Vader as prime minister of the Netherlands? Haha, they joke in character, but in the end they at least chose a (ex) prime minister, if only from the wrong country :) Would I have given the right answers? Hmm.. I'd earn the ten dollars. But not all Dutch people would!! There once was a program on Dutch TV called 'De Vakantieman'. In it Dutch people on holiday in Spain were asked to show on a map where they were. And where they came from. But I think it also was rigged in favor of the wrong answers. Great video. Not rigged, I believe sincerely. Enjoyed it very much. Maybe a bit of a long comment. But sometimes, when I get going, it's hard to stop. This here could have been waaaay longer :) Stop.

For example, Van Wyck (Wijk) expressway, New Utrecht and Spuiten Duyvil (Duivel) neighborhoods and of course Brooklyn and Harlem itself. California, Texas, Florida and NewYork (the last has only slightly more inhabitants ) All other 46 states have approx only one third of the inhabitants compared to The Netherlands The Netherlands export yearly for 840 billion US$ , Texas only exported 315 Billion US$ , All the US 50 states together exported only twice as much as The Netherlands alone . The area of The Netherlands is indeed small, but regarded population/area, productivity and economy Its larger than any state of the US. Amazing that most big states of the US have only a few million inhabitants, and the US acts as if it has no place for immigrants. LOL compare that to The Netherlands
@Arjay4042 жыл бұрын
This is a fun one and there really shouldn't be any shame by any of the participants here. Many of these are things you wouldn't know unless you know and the Netherlands isn't exactly a place that deals a lot with the US so there is no shame in not knowing what they speak or where it is, would be nice to at least know most of your capitols but again, Netherlands is such a small place that I don't think it's bad if you don't know. That's without even going into the oddities of some of those cities in the Netherlands. Amsterdam may be the capitol of the country, but the seat of government is in The Hague and many of the Dutch and international places of government are also in the Hague, then Rotterdam is the largest city in the country and is also where the largest port in the country is, in fact it's so large it's the largest port in Europe AND the largest port outside of East Asia and many large multinational companies have headquarters in the city. So in reality all three cities are very important and could easily be confused for being the capitol of the country if you didn't know the answer.

English is actually also a official language, so technically that isn't a wrong answer. Boston is actually a tricky one, it was actually part of the Dutch territory at the time but settled by people Aligned to the British. Participant 6 was on the money, I was rooting for her. But over all, even with a lot of guessing call me impressed. Not many Americans would even get a single one of those questions. This is the first time in a very long time I have been pleasantly surprised by Americans, happy to see that these people were so well informed!

I don't think I'd say English is an official language haha. Many people speak it decently here, but i don't think that makes it official. And interesting about Boston, I need to look into that. Yeah number 6 did great! I'm glad you enjoyed the video🙌🏾

I think it would be a great idea to make Robert ten Brink our prime minister. It’s impossible to be worse than Mark Rutte.

i'd have expected more peopel to guess new yorrk because i've heard plenty of americans tell the story on how manhattan was traded for like 40 bucks with indians by the dutch. then again, this is in california, i guess people in new york, or well, particularly pennsylvania, and although pennsylvania dutch is german, mennonites do have strong dutch roots, their anabaptist religious ways ways were western-german in origin, not all that far from dutch lands, and its following was revitatlized by a Dutch (frisian) priest named "Menno Simons", so he was proclaimed the prophet of the religious movement almost considered dead by its followers and the movement was named after him after that, before eventually blowing over to the USA with emigration protestantism was kind of a big thing when the spaniards came with their crazy hardcore catholicism and inquisitions and shit, it became a counter-culture thing and eventually the norm because of tensions, and well, anyone who knew the history on how the romans would do similar things when they eventually did adopt organized religion fun fact: the orange in the Irish/ulster/orange order flag represents protestantism, and it is orange because of the Dutch house of Orange, particularly william of orange, who was once king of scotland and england, what the English refer to as "william of orange" is another person than Dutch would call "willem van oranje", they mean willem III, we mean willem I the dutch never really had much of a dog in the race concerning irish territory, the irish protestants themselves recognized from history that the Dutch royal family played an instrumental role in upholding their ideas and values, and chose orange by their own volition dutch heritage almost exclusively was in what americans would call "yank" territory, the northeast.

I think if you did not offer them a multiple choice question none of the would've guessed a single answer correctly but i could be wrong. Good video though!

@@exploringtheforeign Haha.... I did wonder who Robert ten Brink was, never heard of him, but I guess his name looks the most Dutch. But Boris Johnson? Unbelievable faux pas. 🤣
