I assume airplane mode is fine, as long as you're an Android, preferably on debug mode, because you can directly tell what the radios are doing. IIRC iOS used to only temporarily disable radios. Bluetooth can also be used to do rudimentary location tracking. I know this because when I was in college a year ago I would use an app to contribute to open cell and wifi coverage maps because well I myself wanted a good coverage map. EDIT: never used the bluetooth scanning functions, as I was only worried about mapping wifi on my uni's campus, and cell tower coverage.

@alext3811 airplane mode should disable the surveillance from Google's apps, but still not safe, the airplane mode doesn't affect all functions on the kernel level of the operating system, and since Google turned most of the android's Linux into proprietary software we would need to do a jailbreaking into the cellphone first before entering a debug mode because you would need root privileges to use it, unless you bought a open framework cellphone with Android or Linux phone, or bought a phone brand that allows you to do it, which are pretty rare these days, idk about iphones tho

... welp that explains a lot. Hi, I'm autistic, with extreme auditory sensitivity. Those ring tones that came out in the early aughts that kids could hear but adults couldn't? Stabbed my brain like a hot needle. I've always felt uncomfy in cities around the world. Part of it is overstim and crowd crush, but it got worse in 2010. Driving through NYC to see my sister caused such intense distress I had to rely on my partner for such trips. If cities are using infrasound to get more clever about location tracking, it would explain why I cannot stand to be anywhere near a major population center.

One thing that bothers me is why the internet is barely usable nowadays? Is it like the thing with AI when it's database becomes to wide and it just homogenizes everything into slop? I don't think it's working how they intended and the more data they add the more useless it becomes. Like with that thing with the creditability and last names. Still people are taking the decisions and the decisions they are considering worth making are stupid to begin with because rich people are too alienated from what really matters.

Even worse now that so many devices are smart and services cloud connected. Data that was never collected or doesnt exist on a server somewhere doesnt need to be secured and is what every person who cares about cybersecurity should strive for.

As a young man and someone who escaped the 1ncel rabbithole, I'm not upset that Kamala lost to Trump. I'm upset that more Americans would rather have some ultra-wealthy billionaire who has absolutely no respect for the law or his opponents and his surrounding environment as a president, than one of the most qualified w̶o̶m̶e̶n̶ people in the current US government cabinet. I'm upset that Americans don't understand the economics and how the reason why we're paying more for groceries is because of the tariffs Trump implemented in his first term. I'm upset that more Americans would rather drive their gas guzzling Ford F-250s and spend a fortune on gas anyway, than care about their community and putting effort into sustainable practices such as more jobs based off renewable energy and infrastructure. I'm upset that more Americans only care about themselves and look for the shortest and easiest answers, rather than think about the big picture and long-term implications a second Trump presidency will cause. I'm upset that more Americans would rather have a person who has inherited his father's fortune and has always lived a carefree life as a president, than a highly experienced politician who has experience in all three branches of government. I'm upset that people automatically think conservatives will automatically lower the prices of food, when many conservative politicians want to completely get rid of food stamps. I'm upset that people automatically think conservatives will automatically lower the prices of college and housing, when conservative politicians want to get rid of student loan forgiveness and make it harder for people to get a down payment. I'm upset that people in my country are against paid parental leave and universal healthcare because they think that is "punishing hard work and rewarding laziness", and therefore socialism. I'm upset that more Americans saw a guy who normalized vilifying the other political party as a batter candidate than a candidate who did her best to gain lots of momentum. I'm upset because if all of this is not indicative of the downfall of American society, I don't know what is. As Republicans now have the presidency, the supreme court, the house and the senate, project 2025 is a reality. The downfall of the USA is 100% on the American people!

The best way to escape the digital surveillance other than throwing all tech in trash is to use linux and private android roms without sim cards and with strict firewalls installed, like portmaster for desktops and rethinkdns for android or constant tor connection. Ah and drop google. Proton is pretty good for an average person

Linux is great, but open source Android ROMs are almost always very device specific, especially the ones with privacy focused features like GrapheneOS. For my phone, the best I can do is uninstall all Google and Samsung software with Universal Android Debloater. Any spyware in the kernel is inaccessible though.

@quentagonthornton49 yeah, that's why I prefer to buy phones from phone makers that let users flash whatever they want to, unlike Samsung, LG, now Asus, the whole bbk holding and now Chinese Xiaomi. It's kinda weird that only google lets users install private roms and custom firmware. But I want to get a Fairphone one day

Thanks for the deep dive. As a Canadian, whose country completely cooperates with the US surveillance, it's even worse for me because the few safeguards that are there for Americans don't apply to me. The governments are telling us to be afraid of the info that Tiktok gets from us but I'm far more worried about the Canadian and American governments getting every single thing I do with the complete consent of the companies that were once in place to at least pretend to stand up for our privacy rights.

The day will soon come when we are required to have a phone on us in public. No need for papers please. The cops will have devices that can detect whether you have a trackable device on and it will be a crime to be out in public without one. Great times ahead. For some.

At that point, they may as well chip people compulsorily, but then that wouldn't allow for such a mass of arrest possibilities, so you could be right.

How long until driver's licences and public transport cards/tickets are only available in a digital form on your device? That could happen almost overnight, especially in countries which have already started rolling them out as an option.

What’s becoming so obvious to people now is that colonialism has never ended just rebranded with different terms. From Natives indigenous people being called “savages” in the old days to now being called “terrorist” by neocolonialists who are neoliberals, neoconservatives, and zionist. 1) Savages is now “terrorist” 2) Civilizing them is now “bringing them democracy” 3) Colonies is now “territories” We can all see Israel is a colonial project being supported by former and current colonials such as U.S, UK, and others who also control territories of indigenous natives in Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, and many more. The liberation of Palestine will definitely give RISE to many indigenous natives around the world to free themselves from western domination. This is the underlying ripple effect that the U.S government and its puppet allies don’t want to happen

No matter how bad you think it is, it's much worse. I spent most of my career doing and developing tools in data analysis. We all tried to warn of how dangerous this tech was. We also told anyone who would listen what must be done to prevent the worst abuse.

Universal Panopticon, the Internet is as big if not a bigger revolution then the printing press, we still have no training wheels or railings on it. As a Communist one must be very careful and vigilant when reading any Post Modern thought, but in saying so, Foucault's essays on Disapline societies, Deleuze's on Control societies, and honestly all of Baudrillard's work, I think are essential to understanding the modern Internets effect on human subjects, society and economy.

As someone who watched a ton of videos man made here in the U.S criticizing china for doing this exact same thing. I’m starting to wonder if the US was just pointing fingers as they were trying to replicate the same thing.

it sucks that all these technologies that have legitimate uses are used in horrible ways. thinking about it, i suppose that's why they work. for all the bad stuff governments and corporations can do with ring doorbell cameras, i bought one because of the severe (and admittedly extremely stupid) amount of anxiety i get from leaving takeout guys waiting at my door in the cold or missing packages and stuff. it's a really weird and personal example i know, but i hope it at least demonstrates my point. richard feynman (scientist who helped make the atomic bomb, make of that what you will) met a buddhist monk who said "to every man is given the key to the gates of heaven. the same key opens the gates of hell." kinda hope we learn to use our keys better in the future.
