I back packed through Portugal when I was 19 in 1996. I even stayed in Lagos for a month because it was just so perfect! I came back and told everyone I knew that it was the most overlooked country in Europe. I’ve always planned to retire there on the coast. For instance, in other parts of Europe like Bulgaria, it’s mentioned that you need 5000 euros to start a small business. Also, I’m curious about another aspect. Our best kept secret is out! For generations Portuguese have been a land of emigrants now with the hype we can’t return because everything became so expensive. My sister pays the same rent in Lisbon as I pay in the states! Yikes! Thank you all for loving Portugal! Just don’t change it too much. You are allowed to change it for the better though! We need american window screens, German windows, Austrian classical music concerts and american sales and deals and customer service.

If you have a 9-5 along with a online business you can use the income you generate from your business to invest into stocks, index funds & real estate. Use your W2 to get the loan from the bank and the revenue from your biz to secure the down payment. It’s the ultimate play.

Did you need to set up sole proprietorship or a corporation to get your AL license and take in the income from your rental property? I love Portugal, and only visited once. We would love to move there in a few more years. My only concern about americans moving to Portugal is that prices increases when too many americans move to other countries, and I am saying this because I am originally from Panama and after 2005 many retired americans moved to Panama and all properties started to get expensive, because americans can pay more , the same happened in Costa Rica, now the cost of living in at least those 2 countries is crazy high. I have an american nationality, but as I mention, I was born in Panama. It worries me that the same happen in Portugal.

I am an American and completely agree with you. The short time rental issues also make it hard to find affordable rents for living and smaller home reasonably priced homes are hard to find. In the states my 20 something kids can’t afford to live solo.

Im portuguese. And there is a huge demand in that area. But is very hard with degrees of other countries outside of EU, but not impossible. Probably you hould have to make some degree credits here in a portuguese university

What do you think about the Castelo Branco region? I have a different path, I want to have space to run my 6 dogs and move more towards self sufficiently and the land seems to be cheaper in that area.
