Americans Blood Pressure on the RISE!
More Americans are experiencing hypertension, meaning higher blood pressure, due to the covid pandemic. This is based on a pretty impressive study published in the journal Circulation.
Why would a pandemic cause people's blood pressure to run higher?
By the end of this video, you'll have a good understanding of WHY.
But if I had to pick one word as the reason, that would be.
Stress Or Anxiety.
And this isn't just an assumption or a theory. Take a look at some of the most searched health topics of 2021, like "why do I feel anxious for no reason" It's also no wonder why the US surgeon general just warned about the devastating mental health effects that young people are facing, which have been amplified by the covid pandemic. The 53-page report shows the significant increases in self-reports of depression, anxiety, and mental-health-related ER visits.
One significant stat is that ER visits for suicide attempts rose 51% for adolescent girls in early 2021 compared to the same period in 2019, while "the figure rose 4% for boys.
So yeah, stress, anxiety, and depression for several reasons. Loss of loved ones. So far, COVID has taken over 785,000 American lives. Stress from lockdowns that cut social events and strained relationships, Politics, Unemployment.

--------------------------
What happens when people are stressed?
More and more stress hormones, especially cortisol, are released from your adrenal glands, and those higher levels circulating in your blood affect the entire body. Too much cortisol raises blood sugar levels, weakens the immune system, and raises blood pressure.
Not only that, but the covid pandemic meant that
1) people weren't exercising as much
2) people were eating less healthy
3) drinking more alcohol
4) getting less quality sleep
5) weren't getting as much regular health care, including fewer doctor visits and less adherence to medication regimen
In fact, these very observations led the lead author to conduct this study in the first place. Based on this new study, Almost a half million Americans have a higher blood pressure than the year before. To be more specific, the researchers at Cleveland Clinic found that the blood pressure reading, for the most part, stayed the same from 2019 thru March of 2020 but had a big jump from April 2020 to the end of the study in December 2020.
It's really two measurements rolled into one when looking at blood pressure; it's really 2 measurements rolled into one. The top number is the systolic blood pressure, related to the heart squeezing. The bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure, related to heart relaxation. Anyone with a reading of 130/80 mm Hg or higher is considered to have high blood pressure.
The average monthly change from April 2020 to December 2020, compared to 1 year before that, was a 1.10 to 2.50 mm Hg increase in systolic pressure. It was an average increase of 0.14 to 0.53 mm Hg for diastolic pressure. These numbers may not seem like a big deal, but it's actually a significant jump when you have this jump in half a million people. The increases occurred in all of the subgroups. It happened in all ages, in both men and women, although there was a bigger increase in women. Over time, having high blood pressure, even if it's just a little high, can damage blood vessels, your heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes, as well as sexual function.
Almost half of all American adults have high blood pressure, which is often called a "silent killer" because it can have life-threatening consequences, despite it causing little to no symptoms. With more and more people having higher blood pressure, more and more people will have strokes, heart attacks, heart failure, kidney impairment, visual impairment, and erectile dysfunction. So you're going to have more hospital admissions for these conditions, but guess what disease is still filling up some hospitals to the brink, COVID.
Fortunately, high blood pressure is relatively easy to diagnose and treat. In many cases, blood pressure can be adequately lowered without medication simply by eating healthier, exercising more, and practicing stress reduction techniques. This would include things like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. One of the main dietary changes you can make to lower blood pressure would entail eating more potassium and less salt. Take a look at this study published in the NEJM, which had about 400 people. Half of them followed a typical American diet, and the other half followed the DASH diet for three months.
The conclusion?
Those who eat a low-sodium DASH diet can prevent or even reverse the typical rise in blood pressure that occurs as people get older.

I was doagnosed with MS, 13 months ago. It took 8 trips to the hospital in 2 weeks for a doctor to clue into the costillation of symptoms and do an MRI, I kept being told to meditate, walk my dog more (I was already doing it once a day), workout more (I was already doing it once a day). This is just an example how habituated doctors must be to the increased stress and anxiety of the pandemic, because the symptoms of optic neuritis and decreased balance, which usually trigger red flags for MS, did not trigger anything in 7/8 of the doctors I saw.

This underscores the importance of taking our own doctor's advice. for geezers like me the desired range is 91-119/61-79 with a particular care about pressures lower than that; they can increase risk of falling with attendant Bad Things in seniors. There is a reputable line of thinking that systolic below 70 increases the risk of falls more rapidly than it decreases the risks of high blood pressure. My doc wants me to shoot for 110/70 anyway... I have had no ill effects from it.

@@Mary-io1mb it’s not because of god. It’s because you are supposed to be able to exert it. It’s the flight and fight syndrome. You are stressed so the primitive body releases cortisol. Which is a steroid so you can run and flee. But if you don’t run the body stores it. And it causes inflammation on the body. That is why they tell you that if you are stressed out; you need to exercise. That way you build up the dopamine levels and counter balance the inflammation. They also tell you that if you have too much stress you need to take care of yourself. In other words it’s all a balance. If you don’t exert, the inflammation damages the heart and other organs. Of course there are levels of stress that can’t be countered

Anyway, I agree to your analysis, but would you consider this increase is also partly attributable to population growth? I don’t have 2021 stats handy, but I suspect it would register a similar growth trend.

I'm here in the hospital emergency waiting room while a family member with high blood pressure and arrhythmia is being seen. It's been a long time; I had to find food, and all there is here in the hospital is unhealthy snacks. So I sit here listening to the good doctor's cautions about salt, and I look at the label and learn I'm about to take in 490mg of sodium with only 49g of "food." -- Well, at least I'm already here..... :-(

My blood pressure is always high at the doctor office. It goes back to normal as soon as I leave. You can’t base blood pressure off of 1 reading in the doctors office. My doctor put me in a beta blocker for a month due to 1 reading and when I tested my BP at home on the beta blocker it was too low. I drink beet juice daily so that does help by adding nitric oxide which relaxes the blood vessels.

How about a huge push for lower sodium levels in ALL foods. Doctors across the board could fight for regulations for what goes into our food. People are going to eat what they want to eat when they want to eat it. Fast foods, canned foods, even other types of foods they are considered technically healthy can have such a high sodium load it blows all the benefits out of the water. It is time to lower the sodium.

Sodium modification diets will only help if you are genetically predisosed to salt-based hypertension. Only about 30% of the population. Does the Dash diet have other methods of attenuating bloodpressure than ust sodium reduction because that may not help everyone.

They should do research on vaccinated vs non-vaccinated people. I went to the Dr before my shot and my BP was the same it always is and after my shot I noticed it was elevated. Which is NOT normal for me. I thought it would go down but about a month later I went back to the dr it was still reading the same. I told the Dr that's not a normal reading for me and asked if it was related but she said the vaccines are too new to tell. So that's the study I wanna see.

Does a sodium restricted diet help lower chronic high blood pressure? Researched in May 2017 In summary, early studies finding benefits with salt restriction in those with hypertension were based on uncontrolled case reports. When better-controlled studies tested the low-salt diets results were unimpressive, being effective in only approximately 25% of those with hypertension. By 1944 the evidence for low-salt diets was so weak that it had fallen out of favor as a treatment for hypertension. Thus, the overall evidence in the first half of the 1900s suggests that low-salt diets were not a reasonable strategy for treating hypertension. Indeed, low-salt diets were considered unpalatable by most clinicians during the time and were found to lead to serious adverse consequences.

"the silent killer" is not an effective tactic, in my opinion, because it creates in inaccurate impression that if you don't take care of it it will kill you. For a variety of reasons, some people are willing to accept that singular consequence, to continue unhealthy life habits. Calling it "the silent crippler" would put people in mind of a lingering, debilitating set of consequences, which provides more enduring motivation for modification of life habits. I really appreciate your posts. Thanks for helping us understand.

It causes all sorts of ailments, including HBP, Heart Attack, Diabetes, Strokes and feeds Cancer cells and causes inflammation....which is the main cause of all of the issues. I suggest you watch Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Rob Ceyres. Sugar and processed foods are the enemy. NOT FAT and SALT
