This is news to me. I live in London and have always had minimum 28 paid days a year plus national holidays. I just assumed that was normal across all developed countries

Fucking JEALOUS. Here in Washington State in the US we barely get sick time... 1 hour for every 40 hours worked... it's pathetic. Then you are looked down on if you use it (regardless if you are sick or just want to use it for vacation time because if you DON'T use your accrued sick time by the end of the year it disappears).

Could you take unpaid time off and the bosses would accept it? I wouldn't mind moving to the USA to work in IT as the salaries are better, but I need 5+ weeks off a year for my personal life, ideally 10 weeks off but I know that might not be feasible in the US. If I had a higher salary I could just take a few weeks unpaid leave. But I've spoken to a few IT workers in the US and they said the bosses really frown on it and want you in the office every week all week? I couldn't work for weeks and weeks non stop without the occasional week off or it would drive me insane. (I was also concerned about the cost of healthcare, they said you have to pay $400+ every month for healthcare and you still have to pay co-pay and stuff like that, which sounds even more expensive than the NHS system we get in the UK????? I thought the point of privatized healthcare is that it is supposed to be cheaper than paying the socialist taxes if you are physically well?)

Wow, in the UK they literally MAKE you take off your paid holiday - mine is a pretty standard 34 days holidays. In addition to that, after my first year I get an extra day a year, so after five years at the company I get 39 days a year. Everyone gets holiday, even if your temporary or a contractor. Also the maximum legal working week if 40 hours and no more. You will always get no less than 20 days plus holidays (9 days). So basically 30 days. You also earn holiday from the day you start, no waiting a year. My husband, on top of his 39 days, he gets a month paid sabbatical every 4 years. So on a normal year he gets 39 days but in every fourth year he gets 60 days (12 weeks holiday). You also get by law 28 weeks sick pay from your employer - you are strictly not allowed to use your holiday allowance for when you are sick. As if you are sick for 28 weeks then you still get all your holiday on top of that. After the 28 weeks is up you can also claim other benefits if sick, like housing allowance (pays your rent or mortgage) and Universal Credit in addition to this, which can be add on money to salary per child, or just add on money to afford childcare. You also usually get compassionate leave on top of all of that, which is used for funerals or family illness. A few days is normal but should you lose a parent or child or sibling, most companies pay you for a couple of weeks, maybe more. Then Maternity and Paternity pay which for Maternity is 6 weeks paid and then another 33 weeks at a lower rate. You are fully entitled to take of 52 weeks total without your employment being at risk (this is most common). Also employers must allow paid time off for all pregnancy appointments/scans/checkups and for antenatal classes. The paternity leave is usually two weeks paid, but you and your partner can also choose to do Shared Parental Leave if having a baby, using a surrogate to have a baby, adopting a child or fostering a child. Which means you can share up to 50 weeks of leave and up to 37 weeks of pay between you. And then of course the big one, in the UK you get healthcare whether you are working or out of work or pregnant. The exact same as everyone else, it’s all the same state of art care no matter what. All prescriptions and dental treatment are free while you're pregnant and for 12 months after your baby's due date. Children also get free prescriptions until they're 16. (You also get free dental when pregnant too). A prescription of medicine in the UK is never more than £9.35, no matter the drug or how expensive it is. You also NEVER pay more than £100 in one year for prescriptions, even if you have 20 prescriptions a month for 12 months etc. You get free NHS prescriptions anyway if you: are 60 or over are under 16 are 16 to 18 and in full-time education are pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months and have a valid maternity exemption certificate (MatEx) have a specified medical condition and have a valid medical exemption certificate (MedEx) (These include: cancer, including the effects of cancer or the effects of current or previous cancer treatment a permanent fistula (for example, a laryngostomy, colostomy, ileostomy or some renal dialysis fistulas) requiring continuous surgical dressing or an appliance a form of hypoadrenalism (for example, Addison's disease) for which specific substitution therapy is essential diabetes insipidus or other forms of hypopituitarism diabetes mellitus, except where treatment is by diet alone hypoparathyroidism myasthenia gravis myxoedema (hypothyroidism requiring thyroid hormone replacement) epilepsy requiring continuous anticonvulsive therapy) hold a valid war pension exemption certificate and the prescription is for your accepted disability are a hospital inpatient You're also entitled to free prescriptions if you or your partner (including civil partner) receive, or you're under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone receiving: Income Support income-based Jobseeker's Allowance income-related Employment and Support Allowance Pension Credit Guarantee Credit Universal Credit and meet the criteria People in the UK never ever go without free medical care and we never pay for ambulances, having a baby or any operations or hospital stays, MRI’s or tests etc. If you need chemotherapy you get it, if you need dialysis you get it. No one ever gets a medical bill and nobody ever doesn’t get the best care there is. We also have a great work life balance, so mental health is well looked after. We also don’t have guns, so no personal safety worries. No school shootings in 25 years. One mass shooting (4 people) in multiple decades.

In sweden we have by law 25 days paid vacation. And by law the companies can't refuse 20 days in a row. I can take all 25 days in a row or i can spare 5 days to whenever i want. Also i can spare 5 days every year up to 5 years and use them as i want. So if i spare 5 days every year for 5 years i can take 25+25 days fully paid vacation.

@Vorchspaceman
@Vorchspaceman 4 жыл бұрын
From what I understand workers in France accumulate 2.5 days of paid vacation for each month worked. So every full time worker is guaranteed 30 working days of paid vacation each year. Workers can also negotiate how many days they get. If you have an in demand job and are a good negotiator it's entirely possible to get an extra 2 days per month for 54 days of paid vacation per year.

I live in the US, and have always received at least 2 weeks plus holiday paid vacation days. The first of every year I got a fresh 2 weeks, and what I did was schedule my paid vac time around my paid holidays, and that was plenty for me. Plus I was off on weekends, so if I wanted an extended weekend I would use a few of any vacation days I had left for Thursday and Friday. Sometimes we were asked to work weekends, and that was time and 1/2..so that was cool. I can’t speak for all Americans, but 30 days off every year would be wayyyy too much for me.
