I used to listen to Ricky, Steve and Karl on xfm religiously years back. Never laughed so hard. Over the moon they're being enjoyed all over again.

It makes sense they'd get weary of eating tomatoes due to that. But you'd also assume they wouldn't always eat tomatoes off lead plates. Which of course makes sense how they'd eventually realize the plates are the issue.

This is related to the accidental invention of the worlds first artificial sweetener by the Romans: There is an apocryphal myth of the downfall of the Roman empire being at least partially due to lead poisoning, which they allegedly got from their use of lead pipes for transporting drinking water. This is however only partially true - many Romans did suffer from lead poisoning, but it wasn't from their pipes - it couldn't have been, since water alone is nowhere near acidic enough to dissolve significant amounts of lead. The Romans liked their wine, and liked it sweetened - the wealthier among them used honey for this. Those who couldn't afford honey used a substitute sweetener they called "sapa", which they made by boiling old wine (which had partially turned to vinegar) in lead pots until it was concentrated down into a syrup. In this process, the acetic acid in the vinegar would react with the lead to produce lead acetate, which is a soluble lead compound with a sweet taste. Sometimes it would also crystallise out, producing white granules which would have appeared very much like sugar - and since it tasted sweet, they wouldn't have known that it wasn't really sugar. They did however know that using lead pots produced a superior sapa with a sweeter taste, so they kept doing it. Lead acetate was hence the first ever artificial sweetener, and by far the most toxic one, since lead is a potent cumulative poison.

This is all from when they had a spot on a radio station called XFM years ago. Every week Carl would try to teach Ricky something he might not know, which is usually just funny coming out of carls mouth, so everytime carl teaches him 3 things its essentially taken from each weeks episode, and stitched together so just bear in mind that it might seem to cut off from what your listening to and straight into into the next one from the next week.

any culinary chief knows that fresh tomatoes react to any metal utensil full marks to Karl he' totally right it's not just lead its why professional chiefs prefer wooden utensils over metal ones where certain ingredients with high acidity levels it affects, the final dishes taste

Here's a little-known fact, about cutting worms in half. If you cut a worm in half, you can tie both ends together. Of course, people don't tell you, you can tie them in a knot without cutting them in half. That is something you discover much later, after many years of using the other method. Not cutting them in half is a lot less messy.
