The NM sketch didn't get him into trouble until 2020, 12 years after it aired. He did get some flack from the Filipino Government for a sketch about a Filipina maid. And he had a big bust up with the BBC over a sketches about The Benefits Family, which they cut from a show just before it was aired because of some current news item concerning child neglect, leaving the show short by 5 mins. All ridiculous in my opinion.

Harry Enfield always did a superb Mandela accent, so it was inevitable he was going to do a goofy character of him. Those ads were hilarious and quite obviously designed to be absurd. I think I remember seeing an interview of him where he said that, because Mandela was a very respected elderly statesman and was getting on, and had a rather slow monotone voice, that it would be funny to portray him as the opposite of that

If you're portraying a bee you paint yourself yellow and black, if you're portraying an elephant you paint yourself grey, if you're portraying a black person it stands to reason that you'd paint yourself their colour (it would look pretty odd if you portrayed a black person but maintained white skin 🤔). Nothing in this sketch was mocking Nelson Mandela's pigmentation. We all know that "blackface" has historically been used in a derogatory manner, that does not mean that every person to paint their face black is using it in the same context.

The big difference between the US and UK is that a majority of black people in the UK see themselves as British and not African British. They don't separate themselves from us and we don't seperate ourselves from them. They get the humour. We do have racism in the UK but it's different. A majority of black people in the UK are descendant of the west indies which was a British colony and were therefore British citizens. So they were allowed to move to the UK and be free men/women. This was a result of the British fight against slavery in 1833 which was 32 years ahead of the US. Black people had to fight for their freedom in the US which is why the subject of slavery is still a bit of an open wound over there. Personally, I don't really care about race, I just see another inhabitant of Earth.
@Nico12233
@Nico12233 6 сағат бұрын
Yeah but the treatment and racism in the US especially from gung ho cops is on an entirely different level. Too many black people have died as a result. So I understand the sensitivity there.

It is alright - not all South Africans like Nelson Mandela, particularly the ones who got out before the institutionalised brain washing started regarding the bombings, executions, "reverse" discrimination and expropriation of private business assets. To be fair, some of the latter stuff came about when they had a subsequent president representing Mandela's party, who was partially illiterate and couldn't count, but he was one of Mandela's cronies and hand picked to succeed him. To be fair, Harry Enfield is right in pointing out the fact that Mandela could just about get away with anything, so why not promote these products

Yeah our Dad watched it as if it was top class entertainment, while we kids were just bored sh!teless by the whole silly palava - I never, ever found out WHAT the attraction was supposed to be ... same with football ... he stared at it like it was "Open University" ... and to this day, I still don;t understand the fascination of watching people chase a ball ... I guess that after TV was invented, it was only then that they realised ... "HEY - WE'VE GOT NOTHING TO TRANSMIT!" - and it took a few decades (which Nelson mandella pronounces "Dik heds") for them to come up with enough material to fill the few hours just two channels were on air. It's like ANY moving images would do - people in big hats - people would sit and watch people in big hats for HOURS when we were kids, while we were bored out of our little skulls wishing we could shoot ourselves rather than watch yet more showjumping featuring people with big hats, or people in church, featuring people in big hats, or tsome boring royal "event", featuring big hats with people underneath them, - The Good Old Days - people in big hats - Tom Brown's DEPRESSING School days (Kids in big hats) ... I eventually realised we humans are a bit nuts.

God Save our King Boomer, Long Live our Queen Boomer, Long May they reign. There was a hilarious sketch show from the BBC called "The Fast Show" it was an utter scream and launched the career of many very funny people. I am sure you and your misses would have a few moments of hysteria watching some of that stuff. Brilliant.
