The only time I've ever been turned away from a nightclub on the "no trainers" rule was when I was accompanying a girlfriend who wanted to keep on drinking late into the night. It was a really nasty looking club and I was gently trying to reason with her before the doorman gave me the perfect excuse and we both went home instead. I think he was amazed I was so delighted by his response. I suppose that's the thing with clubs. When you're a teenager you're absolutely desperate to get into any of them, no matter how awful they are. By the time you're nearly thirty, your attitude becomes "Oh God, do we have to do this again? We've got drinks at home and music we actually like".

Nightclubs have very specific quotas on how many men are allowed in, they can't legally say that so they invent lots of reasons why they can't let you in. There's no real dress code for women and you'll often see a guy in a vest on the dancefloor who for some reason didn't have the rules applied to them. All about who you know, the dress code is just a convenient excuse.

When I was 18 I went to my mates sisters uni house to go out clubbing with the older kids. When the taxi arrived it waited up the road, everyone left but I had to get my shoes on, but suddenly theyd gone missing. I was frantically searching for like 5 minutes, with a taxi and everyone waiting a minute up the road, and was starting to stress out like what do I even do, my shoes arent here. Then I noticed this girls size 4 Ugg Boots that were a big thing back then, and stuffed my size 9 feet into them, with my heels basically crushing the backs of them 😂 she didnt notice until we got to the club, and then she went nuts as expected, the boots were ruined. Somehow I still got in all the clubs though, I think the bouncers just thought what a lad 😂

The no trainers rule was only because they marked the dance floor, kind of like a basketball court. They relaxed the rule around the time this came out due to nightclubs becoming less popular among young adults and things like warehouse projects and music festivals blowing up. The only other rule British clubs usually have is no football shirts; as loads of drunk rival fans together is a recipe for disaster

I cannot emphasise enough that you should NOT drive in Central London, especially as a tourist. It's insanely expensive, insanely slow, and insanely inconvenient. Getting taxis everywhere (or even Ubers) would also be ridiculously expensive, so avoid that too. In London anyone with any sense uses the tube (fast, reasonably cheap and very easy to figure out) and buses (slower and more challenging to work out, but worth it because they're very cheap, go absolutely everywhere, and let you tour many of the sights for almost nothing). Just also DO NOT travel during rush hour, by any method. Outside of London though, driving is much more worth it, especially in rural areas.

I didn't carry any because I was 35 and I told the door staff as much. "WTF. I'm 35 and my girlfriend is 29!" The imbeciles still would not admit us.
