The “chanting” of Kabbaddi is a fine science. As children we could ONLY stay in the opposite court until you can chant in ONE breath. So it’s literally non-stop. So u have to (1)concentrate on your breathing (2)keep chanting (3)try to catch/out opponents (4) save yourself (5) get back to your side - all in basically 1 breath.

Kabaddi (Tamil: கபடி) originated in the modern Tamil region of the Indian subcontinent, which is predominantly present day Tamil Nadu and parts of other South Indian states of India. Tamil empire spread this game to South East Asia during their sea trade. The word kabaddi has been derived from the Tamil word "kai-pidi" (கை பிடி) which means "to hold hands". The exact origins of Kabaddi are disputed, although there is no solid proof, theories from religious believers states that Kabaddi originated from either the Vedic period of ancient India, or the Sistan region of present-day Iran. The game was said to have been popular among the Yadava people; an abhang by Tukaram stated that the god Krishna played the game in his youth, while the Mahabharata contains an account of Arjuna being able to sneak into hostile areas also take out enemies unscathed, which they are claiming that parallels the gameplay of kabaddi. There are also accounts of Gautama Buddha having played the game recreationally. Despite these conflicting claims, India has been credited with having helped to popularize kabaddi as a competitive sport, with the first organized competitions occurring in the 1920s, their introduction to the programme of the Indian Olympic Games in 1938, the establishment of the All-India Kabaddi Federation in 1950, and it being played as a demonstration sport at the inaugural 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi. These developments helped to formalize the sport, which had traditionally been played in villages, for legitimate international competition.[3][4][5] After being demonstrated again at the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi, Kabaddi was added to the Asian Games' programme beginning in 1990.[WIKI Source]

This is the more commercial and fast paced version of kabaddi. Originally, it's played in a huge field like a cricket ground but all soil. The sport requires flexibility, agility, speed and power all at the same time. It's a matter of pride when you win a point and most players celebrate by tapping their hand on the thigh and try to annoy the other team by their actions.
@Kislay115 жыл бұрын
If it were on a field as large as cricket field, no one will ever get out. When we used to play we usually used to make boundary (of varying size according to number of players who came on that day) and then play, because if boundary are too large no one can ever catch someone as everyone will run far away

Dear Rick and Korbin! Hi! This is a sport that is completely Indian It is a sport developed in a resource poor country to get the young to play as a team combining strength,strategy and quick reaction time. No expensive equipment accept a fit, fast and a Person with a mind for strategy. India was a very poor country after the British departed, So schools took those sports that did not require expensive equipment.Its about couple of thousand years old. Some say around 5000.

the chanting of kabaddi in one breath was used in ancient times to "time" the raid when there were no mechanical devices to limit the raid time. now the raid time limit is 30 seconds and officials can monitor it. It was just a way to monitor or limit raid times, which later on stuck around as a tradition and also prestige among players to be able to chant while raiding!!

This is one of the most authentic Indian thing you are reacting on. Kabaddi is an ancient sports of India. I think it is as old as wrestling. Kabaddi is a manly sports with smart technic and tactics. Kabaddi always has potential to be famous world wide but no one promoted it. Good thing is that for last few years professional kabaddi league has been started by a popular sports channel. Which is succeeded to some extent to brought back the interest of new generation to this heritage of Indian sports.
