one of the best way to interview an artist is to allow the artist to express ... which most of the media lacks.. thats why i like this interaction as she was allowed to express her opinion... wonderfully done ..

Every universe is covered by seven layers - earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego - each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called limitless (Bhagavata Purana 6.16.37) Because You are limitless, neither the lords of heaven nor even You Yourself can ever reach the end of Your glories. The countless universes, each enveloped in its shell, are compelled by the wheel of time to wander within You, like particles of dust blowing about in the sky. The śrutis, following their method of eliminating everything separate from the Supreme, become successful by revealing You as their final conclusion (Bhagavata Purana 10.87.41)

Hey, I'm a Carnatic musician here. I would like to state that not everything in Carnatic music is structured. There is a creative space in Carnatic music as well! It's not like Carnatic music is so structured and rigid. When she said that Carnatic music is structured, she meant that there are more scales and compositions. She didn't mean to say that Carnatic music doesn't have creative part. In fact, in a Carnatic music concert, the most important piece is the one with creativity. Hindustani style is much liberation in terms of how things are rendered. For example: In a Hindustani composition, a singer can change the scale, change or ignore lyrics. But in a Carnatic performance, you cannot change the lyrics or emotions set by the composer. But, you can do the creative part after you singing the composition once, and then change the way you sing. This is done because in Carnatic music, we have a principle that we should not dilute the emotions and lyrics of the composer. So we sing the composition completely, and then we improvise. That's what she meant by saying it's structured. Cheers!!

I cannot agree that Hindustani Classical is so flexible as to allow, under musical regulations, to alter the notes to bend the emotions and change or ignore lyrics. I see musicians paying less attention to lyrics amid musical articulation, but I doubt if that falls under permitted guidelines of classics.

I think she said that Carnatic training is relatively more structured than hindustani. That doesn't mean Carnatic is a 100% rigid. Listen carefully. PS: it seems that she has also learnt Carnatic music as shown in Rajya sabha TV interview.

Music in India has always be been about the divine, hindustani or Carnatic. But in the case of Hindustani, it's later patrons were islamic rulers. It was just a form of non spiritual entertainment for them. IMHO, This is why it allows a lot of Liberty to change the lyrics as we please etc. OTOH, Carnatic music is still rooted in its olden values of spirituality. Hence considered slightly more rigid. But not wrong.

I have been away from India for 30 years...but India cannot be taken away from me. I have no musical talents other than singing in the shower, but I used to listen and watch Indian classical music on Doordarshan, almost had to force myself to do it, since I had no understanding, but just the sense that what I was hearing was the result of centuries of evolution of human artistry. Kaushikiji makes a very valid point when she says that people like Rick and Korbin being much more relatable to the present generation are doing a great service to Indians and to the world by venturing into Indian culture with the curiosity of a child, totally unknowing but discovering a hidden treasure that when shown to the world can only produce harmony and peace and love. And yes, I will be there to watch when Kaushikiji visits UCLA. Thanks a lot, all three of you.

She is a perfect blend of a singer, a philopher, a teacher, a mentor, a motivator, in one word I call her "SARASWATI" who appeared physically and talking through a mic.

Woohh, golden words. And the way she talks, so calm and composed. I see Saraswati in her and I'm not exaggerating. Amazingly talented, mannered, pretty and when she sits with her instrument in a saree, damn! She can be a great motivational speaker too I guess! Her and her father, Ajoy Chakraborty who is a Padma Bhushan awardee, their house is just 800m - 1km away from mine. Btw great interview, you folks interview way better than our own media houses.

I grew up in the very house which was once her Guru, Jnan (pronounced 'Gyan') Prakash Ghosh's residence. It was converted to a hostel for doctors (housestaff) of a Govt. Hospital sometime in the late 50s or 60s I guess, and fortunately, I spent my entire childhood(my dad was a doctor in that Govt hospital) there (first 15 years of my life)😎. I have heard stories of her father (Pandit Ajay Chakraborty) and Guruji practicing and composing magical pieces in those very premises way back in the 50s. Can proudly say I watched both her and her father performing right in the little courtyard right below my home back in 2001, at a program organized as a tribute to her Guru. My father played a huge role in making it happen, in spite of many, many obstacles from many quarters, in collaboration with Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh's family. 🙂 Although I haven't achieved much in life, I feel blessed to have grown up at such a historical place. 🙂❤️. We had to leave that place in 2006, when my father got transferred, it felt like a part of me had died. I miss that place like hell. 😔

The problem with listening to someone so evolved is that most of the words bounce off of your knowledge radius.. maybe if I listen to her 2 or 3 more times, I might be able to comprehend 10% of what she wanted to convey Truly salute her passion and understanding of her art, but more importantly the humility with which she delivers it to the world. So proud to be an Indian

Waaoo.... Shez Incredibly Sweet and Wise. ♥️♥️♥️ I fell a lot of Positive Energy Flowing from her towards Me, I can still feel the vibrations of her every word, truly speaking when I saw the vdo was about 51 mins. I didn't thought to watch it till The End but when she started speaking... OMG that was something very different from an interview. I fell so connected with her like she is talking to me only, & trust me what ever details She has shared with us about her music, no professional artist can ever do so, or I have never heard any musician sharing those tips or information about their work publicly like her. She is Really blessed by Goddess Maa Saraswati, her every word was So Pure Honest. God Bless Her🙏ॐ शांति
