Sunday roast is a must. I've no idea why other people don't have it. The idea is traditional, from way back, you eat really well one day a week, then make broth, soups, stews and other basic meals from anything left over

I adore my mams roasts. You’d always make sandwiches from the leftover meat on Sunday then yeah, fry ups and the such throughout the week. In fact, seeing as Christmas dinner is one big roast, we do the same for Boxing Day. Home made chips, cold cut meats and lots of pickled cabbage, onions, etc. Roasts are king

9:50 Whitehall is a street in London which has most of the central Government buildings either directly on it or close by to it. It's located close to the Thames in Westminster and runs between Trafalgar Square and Admiralty Arch (part of the Old Admiralty building) to the north and Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament to the south. On this road can be found the Treasury, the Cabinet Office (responsible for running the Civil Service), the Foreign Office (which is right opposite 10 Downing Street), Downing Street itself, and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) building. Horseguards also backs onto Whitehall, it's main frontage being onto Horseguards Parade Grounds, where the yearly Trooping of the Colour and Beating Retreat ceremonies are held. Horseguards is the traditional home of the British Army, much like the Old Admiralty building is the traditional home of the Royal Navy, even if neither of them are used by the MoD any more. Also off of Whitehall is Whitehall Place, a street which leads into Great Scotland Yard, where the Metropolitan Police had it's first headquarters, and where the name Scotland Yard comes from. The Cenotaph is located in a traffic island in the middle of the street outside the Foreign Office. It was originally unveiled in 1919 in a wooden form, intended to be a temporary memorial to the fallen of WW1 for a parade held that year including veterans from the USA and France. Because of the public outpouring of emotion and sentiment, it was carved in stone and was unveiled in 1920 as a permanent memorial to the fallen of WW1. In 1946 it was rededicated to include the fallen of WW2 but has since become a monument for the fallen of all conflicts since WW1. The design of the Cenotaph is a pillar of Portland stone (the same sort of stone used for Buckingham Palace's frontage and lots of other public buildings in the UK), decreasing in width as it gets taller, topped with a plain tomb chest (which is empty). It always has the flags of the three armed services hanging from one side, and has a wreath carved into one end. Otherwise it is mostly undecorated. The Cenotaph was unveiled on the 11th of November 1920, at the same ceremony the King interred the body of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey just down the road, to represent all those who fell who could not be identified or who had no known grave (much as you have the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in the US). Being in an Abbey however, it has no permanent military guard and the UK holds remembrance ceremonies using the Cenotaph instead of the grave of the unknown warrior. We also do not have an Eternal Flame as you would find in many European cities such as the one under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris (their place of remembrance for their war dead) or in Belgium on their Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at their Congress Column. On the next traffic island up Whitehall towards Trafalgar Square, you'll find a monument to the Women of World War II, and beyond that a monument to Field Marshal Douglas Haig, one of the Army commanders during WW1 and who (whilst having a divisive reputation as all generals of the time must have) has been recognised as one of the better commanders of WW1, and who tried after the war to work to get his former soldiers better peacetime conditions (as they had been promised by the government). There are various other memorials and statues down Whitehall in either direction.

The vertical lines are all curved outwards...... All the vertical lines are curved outwards, because the Greeks discovered that if a column is built with vertical lines, it will give the appearance of narrowing in the middle. The curve outwards gives an optical illusion of straight lines. Even the surface is curved upwards to allow for the illusion.

Well done, but it is still sick that we asked you to take an un British test. What have actors, Olympians and in my sister in law's case, Hansard., got to do with anything at all. Rather than knowing what Chartist was, you should know what a peer is. Knowing who built a castle in the 11th century does not help you if you dating a 15 year old. As you are from the USA that last point may pass you by. As you are over 18 the age of consent is 18 in the USA. It is simply 16 in the UK, but 14 in Italy, both the latter are regardless of your age. A Polish man who was starving killed a swan on the Thames, between Oxford and the sea, and went to jail. Agreed almost anywhere in the UK killing a swan is illegal and unacceptable. However you don't invoke ancient crimes against the king. Killing a goose or even a duck would not have garnered such hate. If you drop a banknote then you stamp on it to stop it blowing away, but accidentally injure an animal in an accident and you better show contrition. None of this is included in the test.

They resulted in the Kingdom of Great Britain which lasted from 1707 until 1800 when it was merged with the island of Ireland to create The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, now, following the independence of The Irish Republic in 1922, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A Sunday roast can be with any kind of meat - beef, lamb, chicken and pork are all standard fayre - the key factors are (a) a big joint of meat that will not only feed you on Sunday but will provide leftovers for meals for another day or two, and (2) everything that goes with it, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, a selection of vegetables, gravy and stuffing. Although Scotland is famous for its highland cows, they aren't traditionally beef cattle, other breeds are much better for meat!

My partner failed a few of these mock tests too, but gradually improved and when confident enough to take the real test, passed first time. Very good for a first attempt without specific study. Of course most people who take it spend a while reading the book which contains all the answers so it ought to be pretty easy for them. I got my wife through it even though her English was poor and she couldn’t read the book. I spent 3 months going through about 1500 possible questions giving her a strategy for each. Eg. A list of words. Fawkes, gunpowder, fireworks, November, Parliament, King James. She didn’t know what those words meant, but she knew if one of them was in the question then one of the others would be in the answer😂 She passed first time!

There are so many varied aspects of British life, it's impossible (and pointless) to cover in a short multiple choice test. But to bring some aspects together, one could be British if: you start the day with a full English breakfast, then have a cup of tea, stand in a queue to watch a Wallace & Gromit film, listen to Test Match Special on Radio 4, go to the pub for some real ale, chase a wheel of cheese down hill, engage in a bit of welly wanging and bake a Victoria sponge using a recipe approved by the Women's Institute.
