You just ate the entire chunk of lemon pickle in the first bite !! 😱 You are supposed to just touch your spoon on it and lick it ... may be a tiny pice of it... what you did there even Indians can’t handle honestly 😆 It’s like gulping half the bottle of tobesco in one go 😬

@@akashbhadouria6727 been to india. The food is a little different but I wouldn't say better. I would understand indian people saying its bad though, it's exactly like italians laughing at americans putting cream in carbonara. Both are nice, one is authentic. That said, there are a lot of restaurants now in the UK that make authentic indian curry. The competition is so high (there are over 100 indian restaurants within 1 mile of where I live) that quality has to be excellent or they go out of business and they do whatever they can to make themselves stand out.

Al Frash is my favourite balti place there, well worth a try if you're ever back in Birmingham! The minty flavour with the sauces was in the yoghurt on its own too. Mint yoghurt is really common in UK curry houses, and then the dark green paste was coriander (cilantro) mostly and sometimes with mint too.

Mmmmm - Lime pickle is my favourite. One thing I discovered when I visited New York - they, like the UK have the same idea about a 'standard' set of accompaniments when you order poppadoms - you might have noticed in the UK you always get lime pickle, cucumber raita, onions & cucumber and mango chutney. In New York's curry houses - they also all have the same accompaniments to their poppadoms - but they're different to ours, nice - just different. Was a pleasant change!

Aryan Girl1492 no I'm saying that the curries in the UK are specific to the UK because during Victorian times they were adapted to suit British tastes. The type of curry we get in the UK you don't get anywhere else. It's part of our colonial history!

Balti Houses seemed to kick off big time in the Birmingham area in the late 1980s and early 90s. Then the concept spread around the UK and eventually you saw supermarkets selling Balti sauces and ready meals. Always thought it was strange buying the stuff in supermarkets because the whole point was the serving with a bowl and naan bread! No rice. The first Balti House I went to was on an invite from a friend. The tables had glass tops and the menu was sandwiched between the glass top and the wood table top!

When I visited Birmingham "back in the day", my British friend took me to a "Balti House". Food was great and I was told BALTI cuisine originated in Pakistan and/or NW India, and somehow made it to Birmingham and later other parts of the Midlands and then the UK. Another story is that it originated in Birmingham itself by the immigrants from Pakistan/India. No one really knows for sure. But such is the role of the British Empire on food...

Gary L london is merely a gateway...but even in london..get out of the tourist spots and visit the local areas....get out to twickenham...camden....north london parks are beautiful ...if you like animals check out our shelters and city farms...go horse riding in Ealing...sailing on the many lakes...london is vast and different.

Jay, you are right, London is, of course, a great world-class city. The point I was trying to make was that foreign visitors, after being on the usual "tourist trails" (you know what they are), should make a point to go out and visit the rest of Great Britain; including "Greater London", not always on the "standard tourist itineraries." So much to see and do in your country and the British people are some of the friendliest people I know (despite the stereotype "British reserve").

Gary L yes of course....ive lived in london 35 years and of course you do the main attractions...my perfect day out is a wLk along the Thames on a summers day preferbly with a couple of glasses of wine and lunch on a boat cafe or in Covent Garden....but equally im happy spending a few hours in the beautiful Gladstone Park two minutes from my home and plus its free to do so. If i exit london im off the my second favourit place which is exmouth ...for a day on the beach or sight seeing in discovering in Bath or city of Cambridge...i love it .

Jay, I am with you-in spirit! Whenever I visit my British friends I know that we do not always go to places on the well trod tourist trail. Its being able to have the "best of both worlds" that make me feel very lucky to be able to travel around your country. I am an unabashed Anglophile.

My only apprehension is that when foreigners try Indian food for the first time, the impression about the dish that they cultivate and carry back with them ( either good or bad) is based on the cooking ability of chef. Not all chefs in restaurants are authentic or good in preparing Indian food. Some of them may ruin the whole thing and poor unaware customer who has eaten it for first time will go with an idea for ever that particular dish/ indian food taste horrible. In reality, however, that may or may not be the case. Like for example, keema ( minced meat) served here has good amount of veggies in it? Well i have had keema all my life ( at home and restaurants), but i have never seen it with so many vegetables. Its just a minced mutton dish. Also, the thing or the pot in which they are serving main course food is not even called Balti. Its one of the most common utensils used in Indian households and is called Kadaahi. Baalti on the other hand means bucket. It is much deeper cylindrical shaped (almost in the shape of a glass) with handle bar on it. Are you sure this place is really an Indian joint? I mean, who knows, may be its managed by our Pakistani or Bangladeshi friends?

eugeneluther I can’t speak for anywhere else in the world, but in Birmingham there is a dish called a Balti, and it’s served in the wok-shaped bowls. Those of us who’ve eaten it and enjoyed it for years and have happy memories of sharing them with friends in the Balti houses of Stoney Lane and Ladypool Road don’t really care if it’s authentic to anywhere else. The people who make it and sell it call it Balti, who are any of the rest of us to quibble?

Expert here. ;) Patrick is actually correct. Locally, we eat those mild spice curries with 1 or 2 naans (or rotis, because naan can only be made with special ovens, not available in homes) and end it up with some rice, basically like 1 - 2 scoops of fresh rice on those big spoons. I use that because there is no way I am going to end all those vegetables so I end the contents of the balti along with some rice.

BIR Indian food is different from food in India... It is a British modification of Indian cuisine. It's actually so good, that many restaurants in India are now serving BIR food... It's also hotter... Although Balti is quite mild in either case.

My experience of Balti is that they are served in a small bucket with a lot more sauce than that. That's much better for dipping the naan bread in (by the way, try peshwari naan if you like to combine heat with sweet). What you got definitely needed rice, and perhaps a calorific onion bhaji - but that's my personal preference!

We Brummies (people from Birmingham UK) love a Balti. We usually eat it straight from the balti dish, using pieces of the naan bread to scoop the curry up. When your bread is all gone, you use the spoon to finish off what is left. The plate is just so that the waiter can carry the balti to you. The balti is also cooked in the dish it is served to you in.

You should check out Hampshire next time! The birth place of the royal navy, the air force and the army, has the historic city of winchester, once the capital of the country, the old royal hunting grounds for william the conqueror, including the marked spot of one of his son's death from a hunting accident in the forest, and portsmouth has the historic dockyard, with a dredged up tudor warship, the first ironclad ship, and nelsons flagship HMS victory (from the battle of trafalgar). And it's right on the doorstep of the jurassic coast, wiltshire (salisbury and stonehenge) and the south downs national park!
