I guess travelling abroad helps a bit in making you pay more attention to maps :) They say about 60% of Americans don't even own a passport, which is shocking compared to people from other countries.
@guXchokiXpa3 жыл бұрын
@@geosophik9369 When you think about it, most Americans won't even visit all 50 states in their lifetime, which is why some Americans can't even name all 50 states of the country they're from. The US (from a geographic standpoint) has a little bit of everything from the rest of the world. The reason why people would travel abroad is to experience a different culture with a different group of people (and even then, one end of the US to the other will also have you feel that.)

We learn European and world geography/history like in middle school usually and unless students are taking specific high level courses in High school or college they only get it again in terms of the Wars we fought in and the boundaries and names of nations changes a lot in Europe from the late 1600s to the end of the Cold War and reunification of Germany. As a child of the 70s and 80s it was sort of a joke to learn places overseas because any moment they would be something different and we also knew the Soviet block would fall so why bother when you should just wait... stability improved during these girls lives but as someone old enough to almost be their mom I recall most Americans ßaw the world as always at war and things always so unstable and changing. Which made little sense to us in the USA since the only war we had with Canadians was war of 1812, when we mistakenly thought they might want to get free of GB too, oops what a big pain that was, and the Mexican War ended quite quickly and was more a don't mess with Texas statement than a War. Our continent is quite stable so we really never understood why the squabbles and disputes in other places require our involvement. So since the last History most Americans get in High school is US History, most Americans would maybe know the map of Europe during WWII better than the current map unless the person is into politics/current events or has business/ family there. This is why these girls struggled a bit, but did far better than the average American. I seriously doubt Europeans can name.all 50 states on a map AND territories like Virgin Islands, PR, DC, Guam, etc.. Unlike the rest of the world, we those have not changed really since 1950s hardly and they cannot say the same for Europe, Asia, Asia Minor , Africa nor South America!!! That seems like a fair thing to ask them to do since we are talking about geographical size and the states of California, NY, Texas and FL can rival almost any nation on multiple levels in the world (GDP, pop, size, diversity, import/ export, tourism, etc...) Western Europeans can name and locate their neighbor.nations the same way Americans can name all the states in their NCAA football conference or basically region. That is not very impressive really when you really compare apples to apples. Basically most Americans need to learn more about the states here than your counties there the size of small states here. And we just think you guys are always getting us into wars and things we do not want to get into because you can't figure out your issues so that does not help Americans want to learn about it either. Most Americans want to only learn what they think they will need or use in life and the vast majority are correct so it is not apathy or arrogance it is American pragmatism.thst says nope not relatable/ useful so it just gets deleted to make room for.something else. Sad but accurate and those girls are so wrong about the first meme. The avg 25 yo American in Red to Purple areas politically is exactly like the American dream of the young head of household man, driving a nice truck, starting family with lovely bride and wanting to buy a home for 2 to 3 kids. It is the goal, it was what the previous generation did so it is expected unless you are in blue areas and cities where it is more the goal of someone in mid 30s not mid 20s due to cost of living and city living. It was exactly what my spouse and I had accomplished by age 24. College grad, middle class career begins, Decent car for each of us, marriage, nice 2 story house with 4 bedrooms in the suburbs, pregnant. Our youngest siblings 9 and 10.years younger accomplished the same thing basically as the meme by ages 22 and 25 so the meme is very accurate other than maybe the last 5 to 8 years in the USA and guys dream of video games so I see it in my kids and Europeans if the meme is true. @@robertmifkovic6325 that's exactly my point. If anything they should be sitting in front of French and German flags respectively, not a flag for the European Union, since they're only representing two nations and not all of Europe. *This is either going to go surprisingly well or expectedly wrong* I have hope that they will do well enough though. So they help beat the stereotype of Americans not knowing geography because they are so self-obsessed. To be fair, the American education system is weak when it comes to certain subjects when compared to other countries. They tend to focus on general knowledge as opposed to actually being well versed in the subject matters. However, geography is one of the few things they did drill into us from elementary to high school. Mainly North America, South America, Europe & East Asia.
@frigginjerk3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'd agree that we're self-obsessed. In terms of area, we're roughly the same size as Europe. If the contest is "Name the political jurisdictions that are within 3000 km of where you live," then I don't think that Americans would fare all that terribly. Most of us might not be very good at pointing out European countries on a map, but that's not relevant to most Americans' lives. Likewise, I bet that Europeans would not do so well on the American version of that game-- how many Europeans can correctly label more than, say, 20 of the 50 US states?
