Best Dutch MRE are the 'wednessday rations'....the indonesian food variant. In multinational combatexcersizes they are very wanted by other nations....high worth trading stuff.

yeah, we looked at the other menus and that one sounded super tasty

Absolutely! We (used to have, mostly) the canned rations as well, in like an oversized sardine can, usually made by Struyk. the hutspot with beef was especially good. There were a lot of other dishes as well, nice portion size, all very tasty. These are still around but no so common anymore.

Your video brought on so many memories; I've backpacked a lot (in my younger days) in the mountain areas throughout Europe and it was of course essential to minimise the weight on your back. So we always had everything freeze dried and vacuum sealed with us, never this luxurious as this though. Breakfast was Brinta (a well known Dutch kind of hearty porridge) with milk powder, lunch was Bever hartkeks or muesli bars and/or more porridge, dinner consisted of mashed potato powder, freeze dried vegetables and a vacuum packed piece of meat. For inbetweens we had cup-a-soup's in various flavours. We got into trouble sometimes though, if we couldn't find drinkable water ... Your video made me relive those times, sitting by a camp fire at night, cooking on it while gazing at the Milky Way. I will never forget all the landscapes, the wildlife we saw (and met: giant deer with antlers as big as trees fighting right beside our little tent, that was scary). And believe me, after you've hauled 30+ kg on your back that day for 25-30 km, everything tastes great ... Though I do admit that if we happened to come through a village with a restaurant-like establishment, we always cleaned their supplies out 🤣

Now that the cold season has started it’s really time to investigate the Dutch winter foods. Snert/erwtensoep, (split pea soup) Stampot boerenkool met worst, (crushed potato’s and kale with a smoked sausage) Stampot spruiten met kaas en gehakt, (crushed potato’s and brusselsprouts with cheese) hutspot, (crushed potato’s onions and carrots with a piece of meat of your choice) I mean fried fastfood is nice but it’s only like a 60 years old. The winter foods are far more nostalgic and traditional Dutch.

we just had some split pea soup yesterday! i’ve never heard of the rest though - we will definitely have to check them out :)

Pate is the best snack food from any European ration . Growing up as a kid I had pate with bread for breakfast at school every morning . Also my mom always had them in the fridge so eating them after school snack when I got home .

There was nothing wrong with the paté. The "greenish" stuff on the edges is fat. It is normal around the edges of paté.

yeah, i’m sure it was fine, but given it was past the expiration date, didn’t want to risk it 😅

How is tuna on pizza a Dutch thing?😅 Pizza Tonno is a typical Italian dish.
@buncharted Жыл бұрын
i suppose you’re right! we’ve just never encountered it before moving here. we lumped it into the same category as the tuna tacos we’ve seen at mexican spots here (which is also something we’ve never seen before and just assumed it was being adapted for locals).

As many Mres, imp's, orp's, among countries, I have not lucked into Dutch. It does look awesome however. Try cocoa powder and coffee, it works. Never be afraid, to explore other countries food. Be aware of off taste and, any issues on metallic taste. That friends, is, key item. May I be of assistance, please ask. I am familiar with most countries' rations, be it good or bad, LOL. Peace and Prayers, John.

I was rewatching this video and I thought I heard Michelle say "it's not as good as the pindakaas we keep in our fridge". I hope I didn't hear that right. You don't keep pindakaas in the fridge. It ruins the taste. There's no need to keep pindakaas in the fridge because it doesn't go off. Espacially not Calvé pindakaas. That's why the top of the jar isn't sealed. I keep my pindakaas in the cupboard, next to the hagelslag. Nothing better than a peanutbutter and melkhagelslag sandwich.

For a Dutch MRE it is severly lacking in Pindakaas and hagelslag... a travesty... unacceptable. 😂

MRE stands for militair ransoen eten 😁😁😁
@dutchladylover Жыл бұрын
Actualy it's an American/English term: Meals Ready to Eat. In Dutch it would be Noodrantsoen- Emergency ration (what most people call it) or Gevechtsrantsoen - Combat ration (what is the correct military term)

Hated most of them btw..... But these look(!) a lot better then the ones I was provided in my time in the army 😂😂
