i'm american and i started watching this when i was 9 and i always understood the dialogue and plotlines. also the dog doesn't only stay in the car, she is sometimes seen around the house and onslow takes her in the car in one episode. and she isn't a main gag in the show, the real gag is more the fact that hyacinth doesn't like dogs in general but pretends to when she is around upper class people who have dogs

How can anyone not love Keeping Up Appearances? I am an American and I love my British comedies. I have been a fan since the early 90's. My collection includes My Hero, Father Ted, Vicar of Dibley, Waiting For God, A Fine Romance, Butterflies, Fools and Horses and so much more. When it comes to comedy the Brits have it going on. Hyacinth is my favorite though.

I watched Father Ted, a few days ago. As well as on the nineties. One of my favourite of all time comedy shows. My other favourite one's are - Royle Family, Trigger Happy TV, Friday Night Dinner, Keeping Up Appearances, IT Crowd, Two Doors Down, One Foot In The Grave, Open All Hours. I just absolutely love dry humour, or sarcastic humour. 😊

But then you get shows like the Simpsons, South Park and Louie where the main characters do have flaws and the characters satirise not only themselves but America as a whole too. Keeping Up Appearances has been popular in the United States for more than 20 years and has been airing on broadcast television in every media market pretty much nonstop the entire time. They don't have our class system. Or it's context in the 90s. They probably interpreted Patricia Routledge's bang-on performance as a working class tory desperately trying to "pass" for something she's not, as just a a "posh English woman having trouble".

+cx1735 This video looks like all an act to me. I think a lot of (maybe just more mature? older?) Americans love Keeping Up Appearances for what it is - a well-written comedy of manners. And unlike, say, some other UK-grown programs rerun here over the years, we get the dialogue (without straining to understand the dialect or quite grasping the context)! As for the class thing, I never fully understood the differences between the U.S. and our former colonial "parent," but your system sure has led to some great comedy. P.S. In the U.S. the word "posh" was never quite used as you use it over there, but recently it seems the British use (to describe what we would call "rich" or wealthy) is becoming much more common.

+70sleftover Yep, you've definitely got it. Except for "posh", that's something to do with class, rather than money. For example, Wayne Rooney has a lot of money, nice cars and a swanky house, but he's definitely not posh, because he has a thick working class accent and has little in the way of panache or style. Keira Knighley would be considered "posh", because she has grace and a Home Counties accent.

"Keeping Up Appearances" is hugely popular in the U.S. It has a cult following and has played on PBS for more than 20 years. These arrogant young people are idiots, and whats more, live under a rock if they have never heard of the series. They are not representative of Americans, either in their narrow ideas or their level enthusiasm for the series.

and these three guys evaluating the show represent the whole spectrum of american audience ? I lived in Los Angeles 20 years, and watched every saturday this show on PBS, I LOVED IT, loved the characters, the humor, so did lots of americans.. ..sorry you only knew these three kids to help you do your video. They don't represent my diverse and rich group of friends in US that adored this show, and so many other british shows. I watched Sherlock, Absolute Fabulous, Downton Abbey, the drama The Forsythe Saga, As Time Goes By, Spooks, Luther, Miranda, etc etc, all in the US...and used to comment episodes with my american friends who were very fond of british shows...so back to the "actors" in this video, I think they represent only a group of audience...a very dumb audience....sorry if these are your friends, time to explore other venues...

Watched reruns on public tv for over 20+ years. Loved it from the start. Social class satire/comedy at its best. As an actress Patricia Rutledge is supreme bar none. Your choice of american viewers must have been reared in a bubble of obliviousness. It appeared only the middle one could understand spoken English. The dog used to sit on Onslow's lap in front of the telly. The car is like his doghouse. The comedy in the dog barking only at Hyacinth = she never learns to expect that he will be there & that he will bark at her. Daisy & long suffering Elizabeth are my favorite characters. I find "Daddy" & "Rose" to be questionable characters at times.

I love this show I started watching them on KlRN. I was born in the USA and I understand the show. Its about a middle class family that leaves a good life in a nice neighborhood Hyacinth has poor relatives that leave in a poor neighborhood. Hyacinth tries to keep up appreances to be a high class lady with lots of money. There is lots of Hyacinth everywhere .Mrs. Patricia Rudledge is a great artist.

And yet, Dame Routledge is doing something that successive quasi-left-liberal US administrations (quasi-left-liberal by US standards, anyway) have been unable to do,ie, move US politics substantially to the LEFT!!! I'm sorry if you don't like to hear it but in a nation with 2nd Amendment guarantees, Hyacinth 'Bukay' would likely be in constant physical danger and further more, Dame Routledge would no doubt have to have her own security detail for the rest of her life. Now, if this is too uncivilized/uncivilised for you to deal with, I suggest you appeal to your local mp to have the US ejected from NATO, and all other security agreements, seriously. If this should actually ever occur, it can be said that Dame Routledge has had a far greater influence on geopolitics than Baroness Thatcher ever could have imagined in her time, and that's no mean accomplishment. (and it will keep the UK from any further BLUNDERS in the Middle East, at the request/behest of dubious US leadership. It could work well for all us!). Well I live in Canada and have my entire life. I religiously watched Keeping Up Appearances as a kid, it came on Monday to Thurs nights on PBS right after Are You Being Served?(another favorite of mine btw). Friday nights would have Red Dwarf and Chef!. I watched those all the time as well. But I guess I have to blame my mother for it, since she is 1/2 British (he mother was British) and that makes me 1/4 British. I do have a slight accent from what I have been told by people when I say certain words (as my mother has a slight accent all the time).

Please! This show is hilarious! We "discovered" it during the OJ chase in the Bronco on live TV. Maybe because we're more British than anything from our heritage but we love it and watch it whenever we can. I think also, like everything else, when you can identify with the characters and know people in your life that are like the characters you will find it much more entertaining.

Eh I watched it in my house growing up and still have a fondness for it. I'm 32 now. Patricia Routledge is a comedy legend. Recommend checking out the opera sketch she did on stage and possibly KItty, written by Victoria Wood, although I've shown it to non-Brits and they didn't get it.

There are a lot of Americans who have heard of this show and love it. It comes on every Saturday morning with other British comedies. There is a huge following here for those kind of shows. Also unlike what a former poster had said its popular with younger people to. I am 34 and have been watching it since I was 17 or 18. I always thought this was one of the more well known and well loved britcoms in the United States. Started watching Keeping up Appearances and other pbs aired British comedies in the 90s when I was around age 5 only to stop when our local station quit airing them. I have been happily watching British TV for the past 50 years or so. I LOVE it! I think "Keeping Up Appearances" is hysterical, and Hyacinth and all the cast - and the barking dog are "lovely" as a Brit might exclaim. Those 3 young American viewers strike me as less than bright, as well as borderline illiterate. Good grief. Honestly - let's pick a few viewers that have a least one brain amongst the 3 of them! Ugh. You have to think of this show as slap stick humor with a running theme of a snobbish woman who wants to better herself and her social position but is shown by people and her environment that she is no better than anyone else. Americans may not understand the importance of some British people on social position and traditions.

I'm an American and KUA was always my favorite show. I'd been watching it since 1995 and I totally "got" the humor of the show. You do have to watch several episodes in order to understand what the characters are all about, then you'll get humor of it.

This magnificent show just embodies what really makes a good sitcom work: extensive characterization and development, strong plotlines, and a healthy serving of zingers and one-liners. Some of the tropes do tire, admittedly, like the blonde bimbo, but overall, very entertaining program whose emphasis lies in the frugality of its humor, not in overzealous special effects.

My local PBS station shows this and Are You Being Served? every weekend. They were my gateway to a few shows I really treasure now like Fawlty Towers and A Bit of Fry and Laurie

It’s also funny how she tries to hide Onslo but he ends up being popular with the upper class people she tries to impress. Favorite one is when The high class lady Mrs. Fortisque ends up playing darts with Onslo and the Pub while Hyacinth is outside getting stuck on a truck with her skirt flying up. She was also in a series about a detective- had a completely different personality and starred with Dominic Monaghan of Lost and Lord of the Rings fame. The Heighty Wainthroup mysteries

I’m American and my entire family grew up watching this show in the 90s. We both understood it and loved it! And honestly this show has never stopped airing on PBS since the 90s, it’s hugely popular nation wide. I genuinely don’t get why these people can’t understand what’s going on. 😂 My grandpa grew up in Alabama in the 1930s which is quite culturally different and yet he could understand everything about this show and thought it was hilarious!

This show was written by one writer Roy Clarke who also wrote Last of the Summer Wine which ran for over 30 years, he always wrote alone and just posted the scripts in , he had nothing to do with the production or casting & only went on a set 2 times. he is in his 80's and still working, his show Still Open All Hours staring David Jason is still running - Remarkable !

+Michael Jarrett my favorite steptoe and son ironically is seance and a wet rag and bone. Or is it come dancing ...i always have trouble deciding. Oh but I LOVE one foot in the grave when meldrew gets his car back from the mechanics and they sing the mr meldrew song on the cassette for him ...its great.

GreyPathos My favourite episodes are Men of Letters, A death in the family [Rita Webb is hilarious], Upstairs, downstairs, I love the Seance one too. But Steptoe is definitely my favourite ^^ I havent seen a lot of One foot in the grave, but the parts I did see were pretty good ;]

I love british TV. "Keeping up Appearances " is much like life in an upper middle class neighborhood in the 50's abd 60's. If you had relatives that lived in slums you visited them. They seldom if ever came to your house. Ladies dressed up to go to church, doctors, downtown, even to the grocery store and hair salon. You showered in the AM, creamed, powdered and made your face presentable, styled your hair, made sure your shoes were clean and accessorized with a pin, broache, bracelet or small necklace and of course colonge. Most women wore dresses, slips and girdles. My, we have changed. I'm not sure it is for the better.

we have this show over here on PBS. If you think about it, we have our own version of "Keeping Up Appearances". It's called "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" and "Real Housewives pick a City" and there have been many comedies where the plot in an episode arc, specifically in comedy is to fool others into believing you are something that you are not. Over here we call that mentality "keeping up with the Joneses"

Keeping Up Appearances in the US wouldn't need to go to the Midwest - Massachusetts, New York or New Jersey would fit fine. You just have to remember that Richard and Hyacinth live in a upper middle class neighbourhood while Onslow, Daisy and Daddy show where Hyacinth originally came from.

But, frankly I wouldn't go around saying that because you might be singlehandedly sabotaging what little chance we have in the US for ever having universal healthcare. And that shouldn't be so difficult for a person with only British intelligence to understand. In other words, on the US side of the pond reactionaries will read your comments and get the idea that the NHS must be no damn good if it doesn't afford the public better psychiatric help than what you apparently need. I wish this were a joke, but sadly it's not!. This hopefully shows just how much the US and UK have grown apart. Cheers. Also, was there ever such a thing as "British Intelligence"? I must be a unique american. I grew up in the 80's - 90's and I love British TV at least what we could get here in the US. I grew up in New Jersey by the shore. I watched Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served? and the spin off Grace and Favour or Are you Being Served? Again! The Black Adder, Faulty Towers, The Good Neighbors, Doctor Who (The Original Series), Absolutely Fabulous, Last Of The Summer Wine, The Vicar of Dibley (love that one), and many more. I've always thought British TV is better than the rubbish they broadcast here in the USA.
