I just love the fact that she's so innocent it flies over her head that Sheridan and Tarquin are in a long term serious relationship where they live together. Well maybe this is Britain's way of working in a gay character without really seeing a gay character . Have you ever seen are ""You Being Served"?? Back in the 70s about employees at an department store. Short little guy comes across as gay never spoken.. but the implications of obvious I think.. just like with Sheridan here. Hyacinthe I guess tries to get that out of her mind when speaking with Sheridan.. trying to convince herself "our son could not be one of those"" I guess my mom was saying the same thing rest in peace.. please take care and be safe in this pandemic were in

I wouldn't say its an old Britain's way of working in a gay character. In fact, it's a quite common thing actually- many sitcoms include such unseen characters - "friends" and Ugly Naked guy, "will and grace" and Stanley walker, to name but a few. They're all introduced during the 1st season, to beef up the plot. Moreover, an unseen character is always over the top - be it their looks or whatever. In case of Sheridan it'd be his lifestyle and eccentric personality. And when a show turns out successful - as Keep up appearances did (as well as the other two i mentioned) it's simply easier to leave it this way cuz a) it's funny to have a character that's only heard of, and b) it would be difficult to find an actor/actress to portray someone the show's fans most likely have already made a vision of.
