I have speech problems because of cancer in my throat. So my throat hurts and impairs my speech. I've trained my stubborn Bulldog Bam Bam with hand commands. He knows 10 different hand commands

Impressive to me, Suge…10 hand commands. The silent signals made me assume the dog was highly intelligent. I’d have to use a book to suggest clearly differentiated signals.

I've seen these statistics from a study done at my alma mater UW(Wisconsin). It does vary pretty widely by breed. EVERY breed tested correctly responded most often to a visual signal by 50%+. Herding/and sporting category breeds both learned commands most quickly (fewest repetitions and reinforcement), gave the correct behavior most often, and responded above 90% for visual and 80% both/sound alone. This makes sense as those tasks require tons of communication, what's fascinating to me is that the other "groups" of dogs learn a visual command MUCH faster than vocal commands. I studied neuroscience and clinical psychology (human), so I only saw the data and conclusions because I had no classes with Patricia McConnell PhD because she is in the Zoology dept. and I was out of credits to burn on interesting classes or I'd have loved to take one of her classes! As usual you are totally on point!

This resonates very loudly with me. Compared to my other dogs, I was able to communicate with my deaf dog FAR better than any other dog.

I train my dogs with both hand and voice commands. We train/prepare for multiple scenarios. Hand commands if we need to communicate in silence in a sensetive situation. Voice commands if my hands are restrained/unavailable. I also utilize dramatic facial expressions as well to signal my dogs.

I only recently learned this. Truck driver and I started telling my 7 year old to stay with a palm out to keep her in the passenger seat so she doesn't take my seat and I can't climb in. Was doing the hand signal because she couldn't hear me through the closed window and it was just my frustration lol. She learned incredibly quick. I was super surprised and then did it without speaking and Maggie picked it up immediately!

This is so true people think my dog is trained because I have deaf and blind family members but it’s actually because the dog pays attention to your hand *provably because he knows we hold treats* but this makes them always pay attention to hand movements a dog that is obedient is a dog everyone loves they are such intelligent animals they know who they can jump up and be silly with and when to stop and they know to be softer with the blind and look for hand contact with their noses with the deaf it’s like they just know

That’s definitely debatable. One instance obviously is when you’re out of sight of your dog. Teach both verbal and visual commands simultaneously and you’re covered, done.

I am autistic and selectively mute, especially in social situations. Comes in really handy that i taught my dog very subtle gestures like sticking my tongue out and moving the thumb like im using a lighter (this makes him nod profusely, the "hidden" gesture is merely for a better party trick effect 😂)

My service dog, when I finally get one, has to be strong on hand commands because I am semi-mute. I can't rely on voice commands or expect him to obey my mom's voice commands when he is working. When he is off duty, I need him to obey my mom and brother, not just me.

I had a trainer get on to me because i trained all of my dogs to both voice and hand. He said it should be voice command only. Then, further belittled me by asking if I was trying to be like law enforcement or the military. Long story short, I fired him and continued to use both. My Cane Corso is now going to be 11 years old and losing her hearing. However, we are still able to communicate because I use hand signals. Her eyes light up when she realizes I am talking to her, even by signals.

100% correct. Once you got your dog to the point that he understands that he has to keep eye contact in a calm way to interact with you, it’s all easy. And the less you need vocals like no No Nooo!😁 the better it gets. But to get there is hard 😁🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽 for the most people, let us be honest. Like 70% of dogowners don’t have enough time, experience and patience to achieve goals with they’re dogs. At this point you see the lack of knowledge because dogs only learn over positiv response and connection to positively learned command on long term. So what you what to teach em when you scream no No Nooo 🤷🏻😂😂😂

We recently rescued a dog who's ears had been infected for so long they had to remove her ear canals and sew them shut so she's mostly deaf. She can hear if you yell or clap but those tend to spook her. We eventually came up with hand signals for her and she picked up on them pretty much immediately. What's even crazier is our other dog who's like 13 years old picked them up just as quickly. If I hold up a hand like ✋ they know to stay and they do really well. Dogs definitely understand hand signals and body language a lot better than verbal commands.

Nonsense. They are all olfactory. Watch all the videos of dogs meeting their owners after a long absence. Invariably they will react as most dogs do with strangers when they first SEE them; but, once they get close enough to sniff then and only then do all those memories come flooding into their brains and they react upon meeting a long lost love. So…nope vision is secondary to dogs NOT a primary. Just FYI.
