Hi Rob. I did some reading on Gary Indiana and they had a population of just over 100,000 people and when the steel mills closed,it put over 30,000 people out of a job and their city suffered a major financial situation causing the city to just about go broke and now their city is less than 80,000 people and almost one quarter of homes and businesses are abandoned. I thought you might find that sad.

My jaw dropped when I saw the title yesterday in my subscriptions feed. I was born in Gary, Indiana at Methodist Hospital - next to the church you explored. Several family members attended Lew Wallace. The other school where a body was found was the original Emerson School of the Arts, where I went before my family moved out of state in 1985. I appreciate the respect you gave the town. I still have relatives there, but I haven't been there in 30+ years. It was bittersweet to see my hometown. Great video, guys. Tisch Cistrunk-Parmelee I was born in Gary also. Went to Lee Wallace for my freshmen year then transferred to Westside. The city was going down when I was younger. I left in 2004.

Cistrunk isn't a common name. My cousin married a Cistrunk back in the day. Her name was Jewell Junikon. I can't remember his name. She passed in 2005, so I haven't seen him since.

Ok, my dad graduated in 38, I in 66 and my bro in 71. Lee Wallace was a great school. Gary had premo schools and was copied across the country. I had 500 kids in my senior class in 66. Gary had 5 high schools, all good. I was born in St. MARY'S. WHEN THE NUNS RAN IT, WAS PREMO. US Steel had 30,000 people when my dad worked there. It was a great place to grow up. When Wallace closed, it stayed pretty clean for a while. Then they had 2 fires. You didn't see all the football uniforms left behind. It's so very sad but thank you for your respect and comments.

I'm from Hammond and actually wrestled against Lew Wallace back in the 70's. Its a shame what has happened to the entire are called The Region. All the high paying steel mill jobs that went to China and other asian countries. I use to ask why and how this all happened until I woke up in 2010 to the world. This city's architecture and industrial/railroad history is so bittersweet. Once again, the overseas competitiveness caused the steel industry- U.S. Steel to lay off many workers from here. And as with most city's declined, crime increased while more buildings get left behind. You've documented quite well a part of history.

I was born and raised in the Glen Park area. I’m 25years old. It’s hurts me to read the comment about black folks and what we supposedly did to Gary. It was not the black by themselves. Gary thrive from the 30 til about the mid 60s. US STEEL was sold to people over seas. Meaning that majority of the steel mill jobs were useless in Gary, people were laid off. So what did people do they left and migrated to other places through out the Midwest. Another reason is when Hatcher was voted in as the first black mayor of Gary, the whites left. Majority of the business was the whites so when they left building were left there to rot. Majority of these builds were not destroyed until the early 2000s. Which I can say it was black who did the fires throughout the city during these times. But the city was pretty much already in decay. The building were all ready crumbling before any of this. Black have never had shit since we been in America. We can play stupid all we want but it’s the truth. The whites left these buildings I can’t stress this enough. Drugs were bought in the city in the mid 70s so this added a whole new type of monster. COCAIN AND CRACK. Which was a government doing. So let’s just actually do research and read before we just judge my black folk. I feel nothing about any race besides we are human trying to beat this wicked government system. When it’s all said and done we will all be in the same toilet bowl. This is what the elites want us to do blame one another. Great video also.✊🏿✊🏿

I worked at the Mecca building, and lived in Glen Park. 43rd and Grant Street. From 1994 to 2006. I was probably one of the only white people who could openly go anywhere in the city. Most of the people in Gary are great. Even a lot of the street people. Politics did more to hurt Gary than anything else. I hear Karen Freeman, Wilson is Mayor now. She was a friend of mine, and hopefully she can turn it around.

My HS was in a wealthy area (still there today), and we did not even have a pool! We had to go to another HS for our swim team events! WOW! This was once a very beautiful school, with everything to offer all of its studens. What a terrible sight to see! ;(

Can you believe that this church was open for only 50 years (1925-1975)?! I know someone who attended back in the day and they said the choir would come down from behind the sanctuary along both sides like angels. So beautiful. I heard about it for years and finally got to visit it a couple of years ago, which was bittersweet, heartbreaking but also fascinating.

The beauty of your work always draws me in, and this was no exception. What WAS different was the mounting anger I felt looking at these remnants of what was once a vital and prosperous community. You guys should check out the empty lot on Carolina St where the Demon house was. They say the spirits are still there. I live in NW Indiana and Gary has so many great abandoned places. There's a Methodist church that was once beautiful and is now decaying. The Hospital where Michael Jackson was born is partially abandoned. I think they use an area of it not sure. Just be careful there's a lot of shootings still as it was once the murder capital. Downtown Gary was so nice back in the day. It's a shame that city has gone to shit.

I was born and raised in Gary, IN. My mother and father were married in that church. Gary used to be a great place to live. My grandparents lived at 4th and Van Buren and we would walk to the A & P on Fourth Avenue. I live in west Gary, also called Brunswick. I attended Edison School for all twelve years. Something unheard of today. My friends and I would ride the bus to the beach at Maquette Park. Growing up was carefree and fun.

I was born in Gary, as were my parents. This city was built on the steel industry, and in the early 70's when American Steel was challenged and beat by foreign steel, the city was defeated. Corrupt Government and bribe-taking Officials was rampant. This was a City destined for doom. Responsible, tax-paying families moved out, and left the City to be overrun by the criminal element. My Grandmother lived on her own in Glen Park into the mid 80's until her house broken into in daylight, with her at home. We immediately rescued her and abandoned the home. Here is your video.

Gary was taken over by the criminal element so people left and nobody wanted to move there. The empty structures were constantly vandalized so nobody was interested in buying them to rehab because those would get looted of building materials.

Wow! This church (City Methodist Church) was built in 1925, used for 50 years and then abandoned in 1975. It has now been abandoned for almost as long as it was used.

As someone who drove those roads and taught in the public schools there for years this is a bitter sweet video to watch. I taught at Roosevelt on 25th. In high school, 20 years ago, Lew Wallace was one of our number one football rivals. The past two decades has seen marked collapse of Gary, a place my grandparents used to call home. Thank you for taking the time to stop here and explore. I hope you do again because you've barely scratched the surface of some of the beautiful abandoned places that are there. Today's Date: 01- 22- 2020 Hello.🙋‍♀️ I just subscribed! You were recommended by Midwest Flesh and Steel City Storm from The Steel City Storm Channel and Midwest Flesh Abandoned Explores Channel. I just watched the videos when you just recently stopped in Gary and you were in some of their vids. I wanted to tell you, your own videos are as Professional as they said they were. They gave a shout out to everyone to subscribe to your channel!! So I did. 👍👍👍 And I am very glad I did! Gary, Indiana was also my hometown during it's thriving 1960's Glory Years. I grew up there when everything was clean, new, with top of the line technology for it's time, and the schools were the best of the best. Back then those Schools you saw were so ahead of their time in every way: Beautiful, Magestic, and Huge in size as well! To a child anyway😊. Gary had a Great School System then. The Churches were Glorious! And there were many, many churches! EVERY building you have shown, was architecturally Gorgeous and unique. I wish everyone would have been able to experience Gary as my generation was able to experience it. I have to say Gary Indiana is a true dichotomy. I'm so happy I grew up there in the '60's. EVERYTHING you see here now was absolutely CLEAN and NEW back in the day. I also went to Franklin Elementary School, as did Storm and Midwest Flesh. We moved away in my 6th grade 1969-1970 school year before the beginning of Gary's downfall, resulting from the loss of so many jobs from Steel Mills, where my Dad worked. He continued to work there until he retired, making the long commute after we moved. So my recollection of Gary is all good. Fortunately, I didn't experience what you and your subscribers see here now. I love your Channel! Thank you for stopping in Gary to see "my" guys and their crews and having a little fun with them along your way too. They were so happy to see you!✌

Thanks again for a great video-- superb drone shot, photography, music, et al, as per usual. Being Canadian, I am more than dismayed to see this kind of decay in the American Rust Belt! In Canada, we really have no equivalent to what American cities have suffered over the years for a variety of reasons. Such a tragedy to see these beautiful churches and schools falling into ruin. I can't understand why the authorites would allow such things to happen. You can see that the school once had first class amenities in including: swimming pools, auditoriums, school bands, etc. The photos seem to show happy, healthy students who were once thriving. I don't know why this school board isn't held accountable to it's citizens/tax-payers. Years ago, we used to visit with family in Dearborn, Mi. and we would pass 'thru the decimated heart of Detroit, a place I was once familar with in the Sixties. The powers-that-be ought to be ashamed of themselves! :(

Hubby says that this middle class prosperity is only a glitch in time- and we will one day descend back into the rich/poor dichotomy! So here in Kanukastan I suppose we shouldn't be too smug here in the Switzerland of the Great White North -- as while we all hope to be pulled up into a higher standard of living-- it's even more likely that we will all eventually descend back to the kind of 19th c. netherworld where our ancestors came from! :(

My Grandfather worked in the No 1 BOP shop as a crane operator, he retired from the old US Steel. My dad also worked there when I was too young to remember him doing so. It's good to know those old furnaces might get fired back up

I grew up in Gary Indiana and was born and raised there. Spent my entire childhood living there before moving to Merrillville and on to Fort Wayne, Indiana where I currently reside. This vid meant a lot to me as much as it was so sad to see my city in ruins. I was born at Methodist Hospital in 1982 and lived there til I was 14yrs old. I have so many memories of Gary and believe it or not, they were all good; great actually. I’m thinking about going back to take a vid of my city just as you’ve done.
