I'm not a dog trainer but a hobbyist and an avid fan of Michael Ellis and Leerburg site. As an English teacher, I find many similarities between training dogs and teaching children. Teaching children involves not only teaching the child him/herself but dealing, managing and encouraging the parents and find ways to let parents enjoy the little hurdles that the child has overcome. Listening to the conversation it sounds like when you are dealing with pet owners, it takes patience and need to have the intuition to see what the pet owners capabilities are. This pod cast teaches us that to achieve success in any genre, hard work, patience, experience, passion and courage to point the finger at yourself is the key.

As a pet parent, I need patience, consistency, small steps on a daily basis with my dog. It won't happen overnight and it's not glamorous. Most of all, I have to love working with my pet in order to eventually get results. Watching and hearing Tom talk about Leerburg and Michael Ellis only reinforces my confidence in the quality of information I am consuming and learning from. Thank you, Tom.

Just started a job at a dog daycare. I pick up poop I make sure they don't fight I make sure they dont hump. I also make sure to appreciate the beauty of how they communicate and correct me if I don't come in with the right energy. Your videos helped me feel confident as I've never been with more than 2 or 3 dogs and now am ok with groups much larger than that!

Late to the peanut gallery here. As a longtime GSD lover/ owner, Michael Ellis is one of my favorite trainers ever! I've never done any sort of protection training, but his sensible and informed approach to handling dogs in general was so refreshing after all the "pure positive" nonsense here. I was happy he and his training business moved to my area in California. He and his team have likely saved a number of dogs from euthanasia at the local shelters due to behavioral issues. It was certainly a roller coaster for us here too, what with the devastating fires in Sonoma County and then the "global health issue". You are starting to become a close second favorite Tom :-). Love the lifelong learning displayed by you both.

I just love Michael Ellis natural, rational approach to teaching. What a gift for us to listen to him. It's very encouraging for us "layman" dog trainer with our own personal dogs.

You actually turned me on to Michael when you’d mentioned him in one of your vids. He is brilliant. I have a rescued Pit and have become so frustrated with “trainers” in my area- ineffective at best and rip-offs at worst- and let me just say it’s so refreshing to watch both of you. Your collective understanding of dogs, their drives, their fears, their motivations- combined with your own unique philosophies and methods - you guys rock!

Thanks for having this conversation with Michael Ellis, it was really interesting to listen to! You might want to think about cutting back on your "air time" when you have a guest on your channel, as it's typically nice to let the guest have a majority of the speaking time. I understand that this was a conversation, not an interview, but there were times when you talked for nearly 20 minutes without Michael saying much of anything.

What a treat for us. Tom and Michael Ellis together talking. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Tom can you please do video teaching us different techniques to work through dog reactivity? i.e. working from a distance praise and treats and how to do some proofing as you get close. How much correction and when so that we don't make the problem worse i.e. dog thinks everytime I see dog I get corrected.

Wow tom, i was just listening to your story of how u got into dog training and it seriously gave me goosebumps. Like I said in previous messages, I didn't know u knew Michael at all. and to see that u guys r friends, being my too favorite dog trainers. And as far as your story, its exactly my story so far. I started training as just a hobby. Working w my own pet dogs at the time and I learned a lot from that experience, making lots of mistakes and learning from them, along the way. Then one day, I came across one of Michaels videos and immediately got interested in Schutzhund/ ipo. However, I never had the money and/or the means to hire a professional trainer to teach me. I began reading/ studying a lot, primarily Michaels techniques. But it was always just a hobby and something I loved doing. However, about 2 years ago, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career, as a professional dog trainer, instead of it just being a hobby, When I came across a video of you. I learned a lot and started watching your videos as much as I could. Then the more I learned from u and Michael, the more my appetite to learn as much as I could, kept growing and growing and eventually made me want to pursue professional dog training career. But I definitely can't afford hiring a trainer, to teach me how to become a professional trainer. I wish I could go to Michaels school Or be able to learn from you one on one. But its around 20,000 to attend his school. I absolutely love and admire the ways u get dogs to respond to you. I know a lot about training and I'm told I'm really good at, by ppl, who see me with one of my dogs! Especially when ppl see how well they're trained, often they will ask me if I could train there dogs. That happens atleast 2 or 3 times a week. I always say no, cause I have this fear that I will fail in training other ppls dogs and not b as good as I thought. So for right now I'm going to keep building my knowledge and techniques the best I can, until I can afford to learn from a professional, I just wanna make sure,, there is no doubt in my mind. And lately, I've been emailing back and forth with Cindy the last few weeks and she invited me out to one of there events or seminars, after this crazy virus stuff is over with. So I just wanted to share that with you. And please if u have any advice as to how I should go about transferring from a hobby/passion, to a career in dog training. So anyway I just thought it was awesome, that our stories have so much in common and it gives me so much more hope, and also reminds me, if I keep working hard at it, it will happen eventually, like it did for you.

I'm a dog walker in a small Alaskan town who loves dogs. I initially came to learn more about teaching the dog owners to handle their dogs easier. They see them behave so well for me they want to do it too. Then people see me walking around town and ask if I can help train their dog. What tools work for me don't always work for them. I am always just trying to learn more. My job is to help dogs have the most fun :D thanks for the content!

I worked with a dog trainer that is awesome but with COVID she had me do a lot of videos that I send to her over 1 week and then she can review them. Then we meet via zoom and review what she observed and what I need to do to fix this dogs behavior. It worked really well. Just tossing that out. I will also say that I am an more experienced dog handler and I work will foster dogs with behavior issues. I’m a RN but am working to get get certified. I do everything for free and am in dog rescue. You have really opened my mind to use of other tools such as the prong and e-collar. I’m also already part of the No Bad Dogs Army.

U r one of my favorite dog trainers that I learn from and look up to. However, w that being said Michael ellis is everything I want to b as a dog trainer. He is the reason I got into training, specifically Schutzhund/ ipo and Protection dog training in general, 17 years ago. I would say 80 % of what I know about training, is from him! I just found out a few months ago that u were friends with forrest micke, another trainer I have learned a lot from. I had no idea you learned from Michael. Then to see my notification alert tell me its both of you together, pretty much my idols, I absolutely lost my mind. I'm not trying to sound corny man, I'm just super excited to watch this!!

I train service animals for a non profit for Wounded Warriors. A couple of my handlers complain constantly as well as myself about smaller dogs not having boundaries around a service animal. Primarily its the owners obvious fault but you know you cant tell small dog owners anything. I feel service animals are at a disadvantage because hes not allowed to exhibit any aggression and is trained to stay in his down to a certain extent. Should i teach from now on a bark command so little dogs know not to approach and start humping my service animal hes a DA and i can tell as well hes getting a bit annoyed. My only fear is that i shoo the smaller dog away or push it away and the smaller dog snaps at me and my DA then will probably kill that dog. Please advise hes 6 months old and i have been training him since 8 weeks. If he wasnt on service training he wouldnt allow that to happen obviously. He doesnt mark bark bite jump nibble no behavorial issues at all but i can tell when another dog tries to hump him his patience wears thin.

Most dogs don't like that. Sorry I don't have an answer for you other than don't allow other dogs to hump your dog. Dominant behavior like neck and paw throwing and mounting can ignite an aggressive reaction in dogs that don't typically show any aggression. By DA I'm assuming you mean "dog aggressive" so your dog may at some point decide enough is enough and actually do serious damage to or even kill another dog who tries to hump it. My girl isn't aggressive and typically loves other dogs and will put up with obnoxious behavior without reacting badly but she will act out when dogs try to mount her. While at this point she hasn't reacted aggressively she will start to bully them and play too rough so I don't let her play with anyone who will hump her and I don't let any small dog's who approach her try either. It's just part of advocating for your dog and in an aggressive dog's case part of protecting others and them from getting hurt or worse!

I would love additional information on this. Like what do you do with customers that just don't get it or will not train their dog. I'm a good dog trainer I'm a good teacher but these people drive me nuts and that's why I will not become a professional dog trainer.

I have been dog training for about nine years now. But I have problem with my four year old border collie. Once upon a time she was an out door dog but my family recently moved into town and now I'm happy to say she lives inside with me. However, my parents own an indoor cat. When ever I take my dog upstairs or so much as out of my room she will immediately start looking for the cat. When she locates the cat she will stare and start to stalk. She will not move unless forced. If she happens to get off leash and find the cat she will attempt to chase down and corner it. I have tried various methods to get her to stop but nothing will keep her from going after that cat, this has been going on for almost a year now. Because she is cooped up she is starting to develop other behavioral problems. I fear for the cat's safety and I really don't know what to do, does anyone more experienced have any suggestions?

Yes, people want shortcuts. Some good natured people get a dog, but know nothing about training. Saw the same where I live in Colorado when ppl would buy a horse. Knowing not how to ride. So. I have a friend who yells at her dog bcs it barks at everyone who passes by the apt door. Or when someone is talking half a hall away, or going out their door. I suggest she leave leash on get up out of chair and give dog a correction. Funny that a lot of ppl haven't given any training. Like, sit, heel, etc. Then they can't stop the dog from doing anything else, like barking. So friend is getting a buzz collar. Well it's charging as we speak. Idk if I'm wrong but I would pop a newspaper on the floor and say no. And give verbal reward with treat when the dog looks and stops. She took dog from adult son who got a 2nd dog and that dog bullied her now dog. Her dog is chihuahua and pitty. No joke. Very stubborn. Friend doesn't have good boundaries with ppl. So boundaries of dog's behavior are almost non existent. She is pushed around by dog.
