Tom, whereas there are a lot of people watching what you do with the dogs, I'm watching how you interact with the owners to better learn how to communicate with dog owners that I work with. As an aspiring trainer, the dog owners are the bulk of my problems. Thank you for releasing these videos!

I recently got two GSD puppies 8 weeks old they’re now 10 weeks old. Fully potty trained, cat trained, crate trained, van trained, on leash and off leash trained. Your advice and tactics are so mentally good it’s amazing. The voice thing helps too. I have a hella deep voice so doing a lighter reward voice/specific dog voice has allowed a interesting connection too. I trained my 2 pit bulls entirely differently and they’re amazing now but they took so so much more work.

Absolutely. It's also safer than a flat collar. A dog will do more damage to its throat by constantly pulling on a flat collar.

I live in southeast Texas and I would LOOOOOVE to come visit you and learn more about how I, as a trainer, can better hone my skills with teaching owners about their dogs. I always tend to either sound like a vacuum salesman (overly excited and overly explaining without them actually understanding what I'm saying) or I simply don't communicate enough. I've been filming myself and getting better, but I would love to have the confidence you have. I definitely need more experience, so it's always refreshing seeing your videos (they almost always coincide with what I'm doing at the moment lol). Keep up the good work!!

I love this video, it is on point, shows and explains what the prong-collar actually is and does. In the country I live in the prong-collar is called a “choking-collar”. I hate that word, it reenforces the idea that the collar is hurtfull to the dog and is part reason why absolutely nobody uses it here. I try to tell people sometimes but as soon as they hear “choking-collar” they just shut down and wont listen. It is so sad. People should really educate themselves a little bit before getting a dog. Anyway I love You guys, the amount of dogs You helped, not just saving their lives but saving them from a life in stress and missery, it is really something.

I’m a big fan of prong collars. I’m using one on a little 15 pound Chihuahua mix, because if I don’t there is absolutely zero correction. Soon as he has his “school clothes“ on. he’s quite awesome and very few corrections are needed. However, he doesn’t watch me very well. So I have resorted to using a little food to get his attention to look up at me. Also working very well.

Try an e collar stim first and teach the dog to walk by you with luring first. While prongs aren’t bad at all, on younger puppies who are very flexible all you really need is a lure, treats and if necisary an e collar to help them focus on you when they get distracted, then if that doesn’t work consult a trainer about what type of prong would work best and how you’d use it on a puppy because of how sensitive they are

Some one may have asked this: Why did you use a 2.5 instead of a 3.0? I ask because I've been working with a feisty 4 yo Lab who I want to try a prong but don't know if I should use a 2.5 or 3.o She is a puller who I've had some success using stop and reverse directions to get her to engage, and this is the third week of walking her only 1/2 of block. and on 1 side there is a 7 foot redwood fence, so we have minimal distractions as it is a very quiet street. ps. THANK YOU for your passion and teaching us.

I really want to try a prong collar with my 90lb pit because he absolutely does pull me down the sidewalk every time we leave the house. We’ve tried harnesses, and different types of slip leads with only make him reactive and frustrated with with us when he pulls. We don’t even get to try to work on actual skills because we’re too busy corralling him. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and the rest of our family are absolutely against them and think they’re awful.

I have been watching a lot of your videos, and I really enjoy them. If I understand correctly, the prong color should be a training tool, that you use to build the relationship, and eventually, down the road, you shouldn't need it. Every time I have seen a dog in a prong color, they are just pulling, pulling, pulling, so the owners are banking on the collar doing all the work, and for the dogs to self-correct which doesn't work since it's constant pressure? Do you have any videos that go more into detail on prong collars? I am very interested.

I adopted a 13 month old Cane Corso in the beginning of March. He walks great on a leash. Still doing some heel work, but he's getting a lot better. I've noticed though that if I'm out in public, he's starting to become a little more reactive to other dogs. Not humans, just other dogs. And it's not bad, but I don't want it to progress. Would a prong collar be good to use in some of those situations. I've become pretty aware of his body language when he seems about to react a bit. So maybe a simple slip lead and "leave it" would be ok to work on first. But seeing how you (and some other) trainers and behaviorists can whip a dog into shape so quickly with a prong is making me strongly consider it.

Hi. I’m not a trainer, but I had two Rottweilers (many years ago) and now own a Dane. I would recommend getting the basic commands down first and maybe do some training going in and out of doorways. You can practice inside first then yard, then outside. Try to walk everyday if you can. Maybe try an area that has few people, dogs, etc first. Personally, I would hold off on herm sprenger until you get the loose leash and correction technique down. Maybe get a professional trainer local to help. Or Tom might have some good videos, I’m sure to reference. I see some people using these incorrectly and the dog is still pulling, which adds to the negative perception of prong collars. Good luck!

The guy kept on rubbing the dog at the beginning. He doesn't realize that for an anxious dog it revs them up and puts more energy into the dog. I know he probably is doing it unconscoiusly but that would probably help 5% of the problem is if that guy stopped rubbing the dog so much.
@kairu_aname
@kairu_aname 3 жыл бұрын
You get more of the behavior you endorse and promote. That's why this guy trains people more than dogs. And no, at this point him stopping would not help at all. As soon as he stopped the dog was still trying to roam and be anxious. Both the guy and the dog need direction and this behaviorist helped with that

My husband and I recently rescued an american bulldog who had been sitting at the shelter for months. We take him on an hour walk in the morning, three short potty walks during the day, a 2-3 mile walk after dinner through downtown, then another short potty walk before bed. He gets, what I believe a sufficient amount of exercise. He is just like this dog in the video. He is very sweet and loving, but is very overly stimulated once we step out of the house, he only listens to commands with a treat, and is not focused at all on us during our walks. We are going to give this collar a shot, because the shelter gave us a choke collar, but he will just choke himself and I don't like it. We took that off and used a harness instead but he will just drag me, and pull hard. I like the idea of having small pressure points around his neck instead of him getting choked. Treats worked perfectly for little chihuahua, but not this guy. I know he only follows commands for a treat and not to be obedient. Wish us luck! We are rooting for this guy.

The owner is also messing up in the beginning of the video because they are petting the dog while they are amped up and nervous. You have to encourage good behavior by petting them when they are calm and doing what you want, not give them attention when they are being anxious, reactive and not obeying. Exiction is a consequence that is a tool in the positive training community. If you fail to do that, then you have to turn towards more desperate measures like prong

Thank you so much for this video Tom. Is there an age suitable to start using a prong collar. My daughters pup is an almost five months old, high prey drive working German Shepherd. She is over the top.....not aggressive....just hyper......has an "off button" on her ears! She CAN sit, down, high five, and wait for her food and not touch it for a short period (impatiently and hyper even when she lays down to wait). She is sooooo strong that my very slightly built 19 year old daughter can hardly hold her. I have a muscle weakness disease so can be very hard for me to hold her as well. She's a beautiful loving girl when she's calm, which is ONLY when she is one on one with me and no one or nothing else moving around. Please help us before she gets out of control.

Question: I have a rambunctious, very hard to settle down and walk 2-1/2 year old Male American Eskimo who would be fantastic at agility but will not focus, and has a 2.5 second attention span. I know it has alot to do with me not burning up his energy walking him consistently. I have purchased Harms Springer Prongs, and an nice e-collar but the prongs get caught up in his long hair, and the e-collar freaked him out with the tone noise, and vibrate. but the prongs even though I bought longer ones dont make contact because I struggle to buckle the collar high enough (maybe there is a collar modification I don't know about that allows me to quickly snap buckle it instead of typical belt style. but I figured just use the sensation prongs but it is real hard to get the collar on and touch skin even with longer prongs. I am sure this is my user error for both, the prongs seem to pull his hair not do the right reactive job to get his attention, I bought a plaster version that also just gets tangled. I know some will say shave his neck, and I have tried that, but its not ideal, and wondered if others have suggestions on what has worked for them. Oh also, slip collars were hard to get off, slip leads got tangled at the snap thing, and harness just make him want to lunge. I look forward to ideas. And Tom, thank you for all you do! Are there videos I haven't found yet on long haired dogs?
@hippiebits2071
@hippiebits2071 3 жыл бұрын
Is your dog full of a ton of under coat? You should be able to easily part the dogs hair with your fingers and see skin (anywhere on the dog) and also should be able to get a steel comb thru the fur going from against the skin up all the way up towards you thru the coat fairly easily. With all that said I highly doubt the hair is a major factor. I'm not a dog trainer but a prong isn't going to work effectively if it isn't BOTH sized and fitted properly to the dog and it sounds like you have gotten way off track in that respect due to a belief that the coat is the main problem. By the sound of things if you have a real interest in doing agility find a training facility in your area with THAT focus. Many offer basic obedience training classes that promote focus on the handler in ways that will build a strong foundation for future agility work (or they should at least be able to offer you a referral). Prongs and e-collars are not generally tools used in agility training. I think it would benefit you and your dog greatly to find a local trainer to work one on one with you and go from there.

I've had several clients who have used this tool improperly and very badly injured their dogs. It needs to be fitted correctly and needed to be used the way it was intended for it to be successful.

Sometimes it's worth reteaching a command to be absolutely sure your dog understands. I know it's disheartening at times but all you can do is keep trying!

I love all dogs but some are true stand out gems and I hope this training helps them realize they genuinely hit the lottery. A naturally sweet temperament with that much motivation makes for the greatest companion imaginable. He's not trying to challenge anyone. There's no intentional disrespect or ill intent. He just desperately wants to please and didn't know how. That's a once in a lifetime, if your lucky, sort of dog.

Nice training, at first I had a very bad conception of your techniques due to using prongs and e collars, but then I realized how you use them minimally and overall mostly train in positive reinforcement. I don't use a prong collar as I already trained my dog loose leash walking using a front clip harness, treats and walking the other way when he pulls. I got my results but took about a year, I guess we could have do it quicker with a prong or slip collar. Nice videos and keep the vibe of No Bad Dogs!!!!

Another great video that every new dog owner should watch. And do not despair when you as simple dog owner can not get it right at once. Tom as a professional speaks dog. Our oldest dog is now passing puberty an suddenly understands how wonderful it is to heel. The youngest is just entering the puberty meaning he gets selectively deaf and tries his own things. But we already know that by keeping up the rules for six months or so the result will be even better as we knew basics while raising him.

Practice! Spend an hour just sitting in one spot outside until it gets boring for the dog. Go to a place with minimal distractions at first of your dog is easily stimulated, like a big parking lot without much traffic (maybe an office park that's closed or a church on an off day). Reward your dog for self settling. As they get better you can go to other places like busier parks, sit outside grocery stores, etc. It does take time I've noticed with German Shepherds and other "intelligent" breeds, they learn REALLY fast but they don't generalize well. This is useful in some circumstances but it can be a challenge with socialization. You have to train for every conceivable situation and in every environment. Whenever I take my dogs new places I do a little training drill with them to set the tone, it helps a lot to settle them down and remember to pay attention to me.

I watch your videos all the time and what you tell the owners is invaluable to me for learning how to train. In regards to the prong collar, my dog, who is pretty well trained always had trouble with pulling on the leash, we tried all the gadgets and tools, extra training with them and just couldn’t consolidate the walking on the leash. It wasn’t until I walked someone’s else dog with a slip, who was so responsive and easy that I realised how different my pooch was. Totally disengaged with me on the leash. Bought the prong, and wow, the progress we have made is amazing and I hardly have to correct him. Engages and settles the brain, like in this video, it is amazing. Not sure why I waited so long 🤷‍♀️, think it was the bad press it gets and was afraid to try. I shouldn’t have worried.

I train dogs and am petite. It's a bad idea to muscle your dog with a collar or harness and the reason that a prong collar is so much more Humane than muscling a dog with a collar or harness is that those can crush the trachea depending on the location of them as well as harm the esophagus and even the neck bones and cause hernia Nations. Prong collars pinch the skin on the surface evenly when used properly and do not harm the dogs inner structures. They look for hricak and mean but they actually are the most Humane method for controlling a dog that pulls that's large or that won't listen. Also hand commands are very important because dogs don't have to listen they just have to watch. The ears are the last sensory that I engaged. @Upstate Canine

The problem areas can be alleviated by using a "place" and "leave it" command. Teach those two commands to your dog, and when they start barking "leave it" and "place" the dog on a floor mat. I suggest going to a professional to get help with your specific problem, but it might help.
