Our girl is super reactive. She's a rottie/Staffordshire terrier/bulldog rescue. Been watching you for years. We ended up in a situation. I took her from my husband and said watch... I started turning and avoiding, she did great! Did it several times and avoided several unwanted situations. My husband was amazed. She still has issues, but she is a thousand times better than when she got here. She's the best pup ever and she was almost killed in a shelter 😢. Thank you so much Tom!🩷🤍🩷

yo suz, same here my boy is a 6 year old black lab mix, because of Tom and @beckman'sdogtraining together my 6 year old labrador is a respectable ESA and therapy dog in training for the 1st time in 18 months Tom ha been only 1 to help me break from my anxiety, 1 day i was at a local park and this blue tick hound barks at me and my dog , so my boy turns his head and stares at the blue tick hound as if to say what the hell that guy problem??? that cause of tom my boy is rescue that is so much like his dog lakota

Laughing at your comment….you took your dog from your husband….. This is a big problem for us. My husband is not too assertive with dog training. I went through training with my Border collie/Belgian Malinois, and she does really well with me. Occasionally we come across a dog that she is uneasy with and reacts. So I get her on track asap. I’ve had multiple neighbors say to me, "Ohhh …so you’re the one who actually does the training!" Or "Your dog is so well-behaved when she is with you" or" Do you think your husband might benefit from a training class?" This is so frustrating! We went to the same classes. He watched, but refused to take the leash. I truly believe my dog‘s behavior would be so much better if he would consistently do what we were taught to do. It is essential that he sometimes walks her. But I think his laidback attitude towards training is extremely detrimental to our dog. I feel as if I am always cleaning up bad behavior that he allows her to do :/

The good news is, she is a daddy's girl, and she is the most trainable pup on the planet, other than being super reactive 😂, so when he does get serious, she does listen very well. However we had to have a heart to heart on how he HAS to be on my side. He was WAY to, "oh she'll be fine." He's come around and actually told me I'm right 😳. He broke his heel last year and now has a bone spur and has issues walking long distance. It's actually worked out well for the whole, I'll take them (we have 2) for walks. I'm the proactive one. We have a state park that's not far, with a huge open area with a shelter and paths. We take them there often and he is watching us at all times, but I walk them. Go dog mommas! ☺️

That’s what you have to do! Push your dog THROUGH their fears and triggers. Not isolate them. You can change his responses to other dogs with consistent practice & well timed corrections. Good luck!

Watched Tom for a couple of years. This video is one of his best short compact information filled he has ever made ( my opinion), for beginners to experienced dog walkers. I take tons of notes and still find a new idea every time I rewatch his videos. It like my brain can’t take it all in at one viewing , so watching again and again feeds it to me in pieces I can assimilate. The stage I’m in with my dog also brings out points that are now very relevant.

My pit bull Buddy, who is long gone, used to LOVE trash trucks. One day, when he was a puppy, we were out on a walk and a trash truck driver stopped to ask if he could pet Buddy. Buddy had a good time with the driver, and from that time forward, every time he saw (or heard) a trash truck, he was excited to see if his friend would stop to see him. 🙂🐾

When my old Pit, Pauley, was a puppy, we made sure he met the mailman and the UPS guy and got to know them so he wouldn't go nuts (like most other dogs) when they showed up. He loved them. If we were outside and he was off lead, he'd jump into the trucks with them. We got a Boston for Pauley, and Spike started doing the same. UPS guy would be getting a package from the back and the boys would go see him. I lived on a dead end and he'd take them for a ride in the truck while he delivered the rest of the packages on my block and drop them off when he got back to my house.

I want to leave a comment to support what you’re saying. We have a two year-old reactive dog. When my son brought her home at three months old, I started doing the techniques you’re showing. And even though my son does not require her to do any of the calm behaviours when out on walks, she will calmly walk on a leash with me because of all the practice we’ve done. She has learned that our relationship requires her to disregard distractions and focus on me and what I’m asking of her. And I had to do this without food or treats, because she has a G.I. issue that requires digestive enzyme every time she eats something. It took a lot of effort, but was well worth it to have a relationship where I enjoy going on walks with her. I practice daily in the house….out the house, whenever we’re together.

Ditto for me. My friend’s dogs behave completely different with me than with their owners, Once I had to take care of two miniature poodles and two high energy, goldens. I took all four dogs walking,. Then I asked all of them to sit on a bench for a picture. One viewer asked I could hold all them back. I said I never walk when the leash gets tight, And when tho youngest golden was a puppy, I gave her a treat every time she looked back at me.i A year later, I could take her with me while I was using a walker and she waited for me to take pictures and was was very reactive to me.

I do this in general while walking my Cane Corso. He’s 15 months old and weighs 140lbs. I can’t have him being reactive. I change directions, stop, have him sit, down, take a few steps away, go back to him. He’s at the challenging age of testing his boundaries, but I’m doing what I can to keep him engaged on me and keeping my pay scale higher than whatever he sees.

Seeing other things is now a good thing - the engage disengage game. When you build up the bank, especially when you're first training, helps to eventually either not need a treat or not need as many now that he's been rewarded so much when you first started. With my Dobe I will say No Bark, Just Watch. It acknowledges their alert to someone or something (dog, feral cat, etc) in the environment then lots of praise when you can pass without incident. Hope that helps.

Thank you. I adopted a 3 year old female lab that had been abandoned at a boarding facility, she lived there 8 months then was taken to the pound. I found her shut down. I adopted and found she is very well trained but is also very reactive to dogs on our walk to the potty location. I will try this and work hard on these because at times on the day there are many dogs out. She is extremely reactive if they are reactive first. So thank you!

She did finally see the dog and we had a small reaction and I reversed direct took a few steps told her to sit then walked and turned again to where she could see it. I have a Belgian Malinois and my problem is mostly the other dog owners. They see me correcting my dog and still they come up to me with their dog and say stuff like "Hey they want to play!" Exactly!! I deal with this all the time as well. My dog is still a puppy and really cute/small but i train her very strictly like she’s a huge dog. People regularly see me actively training her and will still make kissy noises at her to get her attention away from me as we are training together out in public. And I have to tell people often to please not touch her. It’s so rude! I can’t believe people are so idiotic and selfish, even the ones with dogs of their own. Unbelievable. Then I look like the bad guy for asserting myself and asking them to please stop 🙄

Agree: Do what works. I was told by a positive only dog trainer never to use a prong or pinch collar. Well, the Dobie escaped twice from a harness, and corrections don't work well with a harness. So on went a Starmark training collar. I have much more control, and corrections work better. Thanks for all you do.

Tom is awesome. I rescued what I think is a German shepherd mix and be struggling for the first bit, but turned around quickly. I find myself coming back to these videos when I need a refresh on how to handle situations that might arise. This dog has become very protective of me and has some stranger danger like I do, I really want to work through it with him, and these videos are a God send. Your videos are extremely helpful, im a newly single mom and can't afford a trainer now. we got our dog 105lb german shephard husky mix from the pound 18 months ago. He was about 1.5years no issues at first reactive excited and loved to run and play with other dogs, now that he's 3 he's matured, a few months ago he started getting dominant at the dog park and aggressive reactive towards other dogs but it's inconsistent. Currently, prong collar training and your guidance is so helpful for me to learn how to keep him and other dogs safe.

Thank you for your free advice! It’s very helpful. I’ve hired a trainer who comes once a week for about an hour (it’s not inexpensive). There’s a lot of down time in between sessions, so it’s my job is to practice every day. I will admit, I get pretty bummed when we have a fail and my big white GSD barks at other dogs and my neighbors look terrified. Thank you Tom! My dog does well on leash unless the other dog is bigger and looking at him and/or staring him down. I haven't decided if it's insecurities or excitement. He does better when we pass dogs on narrow trails vs. Passing another dog accross the street. Great reminder to incorporate obedience in our walks more often.

I loved this I am a guide dog user whose guide has been attacked several times no blood but we have had to do those key things for her safety and mine due to me being blind we have modified but like the other day two huge dogs and my girl has a tell now when dogs she is not happy with are coming and she actually took me away on her own and sat got her treats they started coming at us again she noped out of there and took me home which is fine we were out just having bonding time in harness but it’s so important to work with your own dog and communicate to others

Hi Tom. We have a 4 year old red heeler mix rescue. Yesterday I tried the drawback recall on three different occasions on one walk. All within 10 minutes of leavong our vehicle. Used her favorite rope ball toy. Worked perfectly. Not a bark or tug or angthing. Finished the lap and after some frisbee play called it a good session and went home. Thank you. I rescued a 1 1/2 year old doberman. She's like you said, not aggressive reactive, but excitement build up. She has great focus, great obedience inside the house, when we go on walks, she's right next to me, etc., but the moment she sees something that excites her, all bets are off. I do the drawback and recall, but she is so fixated on that *thing* no matter what I seem to do. I use a fitted prong collar on her during our training/walks and only apply pressure if I see her alerting to something. I can pull her attention away, but her reactivity doesn't seem to ever decrease. She can meet other dogs after I've had her sit and wait, but even if she sees the same dog approaching from a ways away, she goes crazy. I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing wrong.

With my Dobes, I will say No Bark, Just Watch - it acknowledges their alert, gives them a job, and then lots of praise when you can pass without incident. In classes, we teach an (empty at first) dish across the room. You're just doing 180 degree turns (about turns) away from the dog until you can get to the dish on a loose leash. Once good there, then add some boring treats; once good there, higher level treats. Next, start adding distractions, are they still able to focus on the task at hand, almost like they're asking you for permission to go to the dish. Then you can take it to the back porch, back yard, then driveway. Had an instructor who had a Rottweiler. She spent a whole week in her driveway with a cigar string cheese hanging out of her mouth going back and forth. The neighbors were all laughing at her. Guess what, they're not laughing anymore, because the dog doesn't want to leave her side. They earn their way on the walk. The other thing you can practice in the house first is leash pressure. Leash pressure means find Mom/Dad so leash gets loose. I walk my two 100 lb Dobes on a DiDog harness with the clip in the front and 2 fingers. Nose Work, puzzle games, and games of choice help wear them out until you can actually get on a loose leash walking. Hope that helps.

The other option, which really works like a charm, is No Bark or we're going home - your choice. You have to follow through that very first time so they know you're not crying wolf. And you're going back home on the boring part of the walk that you've already been on. Next walk (might even be later that same day), same thing, No Bark or we're going home - you're choice. You can almost see the wheels turning - hmmm, do I want to bark or keep walking with Mom/Dad? They almost always choose the walk. For dogs barking in their yard, will say No Bark, he's doing his job, you would do the same thing if that was your yard. I usually get one whine and we continue on our walk. Hope that helps.

Really helpful ideas here and great conceptualizing of the dog's experience with the stimulus and with the human at the end of the leash. Our 2 year old GSD-Cane Corso mix has come light years in her reactivity but has a long way to go, especially with strange males, and it will always be baked in her DNA. What works for us is using a Halti in high-stress environments ( weaning off it now) but a martingale collar in the forest trails.

Video is VERY helpful!! Gave me (reminded me of) some great tips and tricks to use w/my 3yr old 170lb English Mastiff who seems to get more and more reactive when we take him and our Lab out for walks. 75% of the problem is probably me, but he's a tough cookie to train. I've had 4 separate trainers/training classes helping us to work w/Duke. We rescued him at 1 yr old and he was 'easy' to work with... as he's matured, he's become more protective and reactive. I've worked w/him more than any other dog we've every had in over 20 years and it's a struggle. Anyway... I VERY much appreciate your videos and taking the time to share w/those of us who can't take your classes in person. If you every make it to Northeast OK for some training or a seminar I'll definitely sign up. :)

I can't even tell you how many times I've had to avoid other people and dogs. My girl is better with people, but she'll never change her feelings about other dogs, and like you said, I'm okay with that. Great video!

Loving your videos; I have a semi reactive 23 month old Male Bullmastiff. He is super Gentlemanly indoors and in Cafeterias … Out in public - roads, town, walking through shopping centres ‘He ignores me, disrespects me, pulls to get attention from strangers and other dogs. He has a habit of coming to a complete Stop when sees another dog and refuses to walk with me. I’ve tried turning “As In your video,” and my dog just keeps his body and head facing the dog behind us and has no real interest in Me ! FIVE Different trainers/ behaviourist have come in so far and NOTHING ! I have disabilities and need my dog to focus more on Me ‘Than the outside world 🙏

Great points. I also walk on the outside of dog parks or go in the solo training section. Do this enough and you'll see the disasters inside. For real exercise, much better off going to large, leashed parks. Practice with a long lead and gradually get your dog closer without force. Much depends on the level of activity. Most properly socialized mastiff breeds are generally calmer, more confident, and could care less about other dogs 50 yards away. High energy dogs, the ones that can constantly run obstacle courses, are in another league. My pit/Weimaraner has an insane amount of energy. He loves to chase the green laser pointer. I use this to run him in large open field. Swimming helps to. After we address this, then he's good for a calm walk. Neighborhood walks: Turns and alternating circles do help condition both my mastiff and pitty. Walk one at a time for best results. We start our walk on a calm street, little traffic, with lots of shade first.

Thanks for making this video. My (older) dog can be pretty reactive. I've made headway with him, but lately he's been slipping back into some undesirable habits (pulling, not adhering to "heel", becoming reactive to small dogs when he used to ignore them in favour of larger, more threatening ones, etc.) I think you're the first person I've seen not expecting the owner to just go right back home; everyone else I've watched always makes it seem like it's the only option, which is counterproductive when you just want to get your dog out to burn off energy/take a poop (mine hates going in the yard unless it's winter; I suspect biting flies are the culprit). We also have a new puppy, so I really want to get her started on the right foot. Looks like they're both going to get some one-on-one leash training. 😅

Very useful information Thank you I will definitely try this on our next walk my girl is reactive to dogs she wants to play no barking she loses it and does the pull twirling sometimes she'll sit nicely and wait until they pass and then she drags me uncontrollably to pick up the scent! I'm really working on it! It's definitely challenging!
