I am so grateful my dog - my first- was too huge to not train properly. I see small and medium dogs out of control all the time. These are the same people who tell me “let your dog be a dog!” lol. My dog has a great life because we always know what we’re doing together and he gets to play a few hours every day. Love this channel.

Something some owners dont understand is how important consistency and follow through are! A great productive training session is instantly ruined by an owner who will let the dog off from a command. Just like you mentioned. As soon as a command exits your mouth, its YOUR responsibility to make sure the dog follows through with it. If you walk away without doing that, the dog learns you dont mean it, and old behaviors, or even worse ones will come back stronger, and will be harder to correct. Repition, consistency and follow through, will make training your dog much easier. 🙏

Im very suprised when people stop me on the street and tell me my dog is amazing and ask how did I get her to be so good? If they only knew that Im retired and me and my dog train daily at a multitude of new and old task and commands. I also give her time to be a dog. I always focus on a give and take healthy relationship. Recognize that I control her world and she has wants and needs outside of just obeying me. I make everyday an adventure for us. 2 training sessions, 2 play sessions (this is also training) 2 - 3 walks everyday. I also pick an activity daily. That can be skateboarding, hikeing, agility, bite work, sled pulling, fetch, playing with another dog or off leash in the woods. We also spend time in public spaces like malls, restaurants, train stations etc. With so much activity she's a happy dog. Although we are trying to figure out who is keeping up with who. Some days I get wiped out before she does 😂❤ but she keeps me young

I had dogs for 30+ years but was most of the time a roommate and not a leader. Since I rescued a Malinois Mix 2 years ago (she's now 5 yo), I have made - with the help of your Videos! - a quantum leap in understanding, handling and training my dog. We have still work to do, but she is on a very good way 👍 I bought the reactivity course a few days back, but I am considering the kickstarter too, just because I think there is no such thing as too much training or - for that matter - too much knowledge 😊You rock! 💝

@Inish I have owned several dogs over my life, but just a few reactive ones who have all been rescues. They're definitely not made from the same mold! Each reactive dog usually became that way for different reasons. Unfortunately, dogs can't tell you their life story, so it's up to us to interpret their cues, and see what and why it causes them to trigger. A Belgian Malinois is one I KNOW I don't have the skills for training or happily owning one. I'm a bit envious that you have taken in a rescue and have those skills. Enjoy your baby and learning with him! They're amazing dogs!!

I've found the biggest obstacle to training my GSD in public isn't necessarily my GSD but other people and their dogs. He knows and I know that 95% of these people have zero control over their dogs and everytime he starts getting over his reactivity, another careless person lets their dog right up in our space reaffirming his bias and it's back to square one. Unfortunately in dog training though, even if it's other people's fault, it's still my fault and I have to pretend to not hate these people and their ineptitude. I'm not even really a negative person but it's frustrating having people interfere with my activities on such a regular basis. Half the time they don't even apologize and don't understand how much grief they are causing me on a personal level.

Another good tip/rule I learned that i implemented with my ridgeback x amstaff puppy from day one is Never playing with my hand, letting him paw or bite it. It's a hard temptation because it's super cute but I teaches them you're a play toy and can their way with you. Instead I only play with a designated tug toy that he can grab only with my permission. It's worked great, I can move freely around with anything he desires and has never put his mouth on it - toy, food, or anything. He knows how to ask for it. He's 11 months now and has impeccable manners.

There's so many things I've learned online, but to me personally is hard to replicate that in person. I didn't get heel with my dog outside of the house (only worked inside the home) until my friend had explained it to me for a moment at the park. That's when i did it properlyyy, and it clicked. I've watched so many videos. Probably mainly your videos bc u show us actually using dogs. My dog knows many basic commands, i can still use better communication polishing it up for him to be patient, like sitting in a rlly random spot, for random reason of mine that he doesn't see. He sits confused and easily breaks, i put him back to a sit until i say so. But small things like that, i wish to polish up with my doggo. He's a teddy roosevelt terrier🥲❤️he's been an awesome little doggo. He does have reactivity and thats getting nipped in the butt!! Would love to implement the e collar but thus far, he connected it as come to me onlyy, vs hey you broke your command, thats why I'm buzzing it. So tryna figure that out!! 🙂still early

So VERY much better than other trainers that follow the belief that you have to prove you are 'Alpha', establish your dominance, and 'make' the dog 'respect' you. Training in a way that they have to blur the corrections on their KZbin videos. 🙁 I cannot share your channel enough, 🤗 - just the other day saw a gentleman with a crated dog in the bed of his truck, on his way to have him meet another dog for the first time, telling me that no, he had no ideahowtogo about it - I immediately pointed him to your channel! 😁 Thank you for all you do!

@@tomdavisofficial Oh, sir, I definitely do NOT follow them under any circumstances!! It's more of 🤔 education, ammunition? for those that I share you with, using the comparison of how you do ~not~ do 'this and that' as other aggressive bully trainers do. People look for all types of trainers on KZbin, and when advocating your channel, I can truthfully say how you train the owners of aggressive, or reactive dogs, giving comparative examples, or how you teach confidence such as for the therapy/service dog that was in an auto accident. I also tell of your videos of how to properly use an e-collar, and your demonstration of a prong collar on a balloon. ☺️ This last one is especially important, as when they see pics of our 'new' pup Zane and the infected wounds he had in his neck from, you guessed it, a prong collar, I can explain to them how it wasn't the use of the collar per se. I am able to share the slip leash, and your videos of how to use it, and encourage them to visit your store for any items not available locally. You, Tom, have put into videos how I have striven to train my dogs for the last 30 years of being owned by them 😋 - and by watching you 'fill in the blanks' of what I self taught, I can truly share with others that your 'no bad dogs' philosophy is not just rhetoric - the most often given example is the white shepherd in the kennel that at the beginning did not want you near the door, and how the incredible transformation was by the end of the video. I'll end this with you, sir, are indeed an inspiration and giver of hope to those that are faced with that final decision of either fix or put down. Thank you for all you do! 🥰

But I actually followed a 1 on 1 e-collar training course, I walk him everyday day off leach and each walk is infact a joyfull training, not just an uninspired walk .He loves working with me, he loves following commands. The days , I am a bit tired and working with him less active on the walks , he just tries to get my attention to work with him , to connect with him. It is true, Those 5 things are key to a joyfull relationship and lovely connection between human and dog. love your video's btw

@@tigertalks1567 If you think working and training with an E-collar is shocking a dog, you clearly have no clue what it is and how it is supposed to be used. Please stay away from it and keep your foolish woke comments to yourself. Anyone can hurt an animal with a stick, a leach, your boots , and also an e-collar if that person is a psychopath. I recommend a training with a serious trainer before even using an e-collar. You know....the first courses were without the collar, making sure Abel knew all the commands very well, using my voice and a leach, me seeing and reading his mind, with weeks of training without the collar , after that , the trainer put on the collar himself, to make sure I used it properly. Then the level is tested in a way that my dog just "feels" it . But again , I should not even be taking the time to explain it to someone , as narrowminded, giving reactions as yours above. You have no idea , the trust and bond between Abel and me, when working . You can actually notice very well, when a dog is in a perfectly relaxed happy state, not stressed in any way while walking and training. He is my 4th German Shepperd, and the first I train using an e-collar. It is a very good tool when properly used, but it can ruin your relationship with a dog in the wrong hands, but again, you do not need an e-collar for that. I have a 1.5 year old German shepperd that has now the freedom to be off leach on any walk for the rest of his life, because he is well behaved, bonded with me, never chasing a cat, another dog, another animal, being gentle with other dogs, humans, 100% sure of any recall, need I go further. I pitty all those poor dogs (and owners) that have to live on a rope (call it a leach if you like), barking and pulling and reacting towards anything out there that exites them, being unsure and not having clear direction. owners , afraid to let there dog of a leach, because they do not have trust.... One last thing, just like humans, to be able to live in harmony with others, dogs need to be positively stimulated, but also learn bounderies.

@@tigertalks1567 You have no idea who I am, you don't know me, you don't know my dog, You have never seen me work with him or other dogs, you have no idea about the bond established between Abel and me and yet.....there you are. and yet you find it necessary, without any background, to vent your anger and frustration to a stranger. I refuse to walk the same path. I will not criticize you or your way of working. At the very least I know that you love dogs and that you are there for your animals. So I gladly accept that you have to vent your anger and frustrations online to a human, a stranger. Better that, than to take it out on your animals, something you certainly will not do. Last one I am guilty of. She is some what like velcroed to me. Our walks are perfect since I started working with her after her owner spent the first 8 months of her life letting her do whatever she wanted. I think he was afraid of her, because the second day at my house, she growled at me when I stopped her from trying to chew on a chair. Attitude adjustment made and she responds wonderfully. Leash with a hermspringer collar changed everything. Now I can walk her off leash (though I always do so in a fenced area and not at a dog park).

Great information! But I think trainers need to talk about the owners energy, affection at the wrong time, making corrections at the appropriate time, etc...and yes, I'm referencing things that Cesar Milan has taught us over the years. We have to look at dogs in a natural way, and how they tick. Full disclosure... I have the absolute worst energy for the dog I adopted almost a year ago. She's extremely fearful, and reactive. I suffer from depression and fear based anxiety. She will always feel that she has to keep us safe until she feels the energy of a calm, confident leader. Fact, almost all dogs with issues is the result of the human. Great dog trainers know that most of the work needs to be with the human. Train the owner!

We’ve recently welcomed a new puppy to our home, and my training has been going pretty well. However, my wife seems to be trying to intervene by constantly trying to get her to be with her, always telling her to come lay by mommy, come sit by mommy, giving her little goodies at all times during the day or whenever she’s eating. I guess she’s just jealous, I don’t know. But it’s starting to kinda get to me. We had to put all 3 of our babies down last year and just recently got a puppy. I don’t know if I was quite ready for a new pup but it is what it is. I’ve been growing close to her through the training, but this constant manipulation is driving somewhat of a wedge between the pup and me. Now I guess I’m getting jealous 😂 Anyway, the situation is concerning because I’m starting to distance myself from being her primary caregiver and best friend. I wanted a trusted companion to be by my side, but I’m losing the desire to be her true friend, and not just the human that feeds and takes care of her. I might just end up going to the shelter and finding a friend that really needs my care and companionship. but it is what it is.

I did use what I learned with my first rescue dog, but I now have three dogs and was wondering if you have any tips on a) walking three dogs together and b) how to train them (it's difficult if they are all in the same space, but then they need to work together).

It can be really hard for a pack to work together if they feed off each other. The walking can than be more of a mjs direction agression. Coming from a rescuer always w a pack feeds off each other. The walk could be your most important tool for each dog separately even if that means now only 30 minutes. Alternate and trade offs one dog may get rhe big walk and an outing or you dog rotate when cooler. Not every day each dog will get the same time same outing or experience. But the one to one for ME has been most important

But no one has been able to tell me what to do safely when we are out and about, but she can get very reactive towards other dogs. She is very well behaved at home, but not so great with distractions. So how would you go about this when both arms are needed to keep yourself upright and walk. Any tips are greatly appreciated 😊

Traffic and people are his biggest triggers, seems like any trick is useless on him because he is too busy being completely freaked out. You can try to find a area for him and you to sit down or tell him to lay down and stay. Everytime a car passes by, tell him stay and pop the collar if he moves from the sit or lay down position at all. Stay calm and firm in your voice. When the car passes, and he doesnt react or reacts a little less each time, give him a treat and say good boy and pet him calmly but make him stay in the sit or lay down position. Do this for like 15mins a day and it could help. My dog used to attack the fence of the dog park whenever we passed on our walks through the area..and it was so reactive and scary. I took my her to sit about 20 feet away from the fence and made her sit on a big flat rock and stay there. Whenever a dog would come near the fence and bark at her, if she got off the rock I'd pop her collar and walk her back to sitting on the rock. The point was to let her observe and learn to not react to the other dogs barking through the fence. When she didnt react Id give her treats and let her hop off the rock and go for a small jog in a circle with me and then jump back up on the rock and practice staying put for a few more minutes again and ignoring the dogs. Eventually she just observed the dogs in the dog park and laid down and relaxed after a few weeks of doing this for 15mins a day.

Search beckman's dog training channel. He's got good, practical stuff. Also, on beckman's, I just saw a vid discussing life stages and relevant training. Basically, if you're 5 month old dog is freaked out outside, don't take him outside to areas you know he'll be scared in. Search beckman's dog training age appropriateness. You don't need to be socializing a 5 month old. You need to be making them feel safe and bonding with you and basic obedience (sit, down, settle). I've also been doing dog behavior crash course as I recently rescued an 8 months old stray puppy. If your pup can handle a car ride (maybe in their crate covered by a sheet if needed), take them somewhere quiet so they can get accustomed to outside without the things they're scared of. Otherwise, just save it. Potty training is much easier if you're using a crate. At 5 months he should be able to wait 5 to 6 hours but should have a chance 30 minutes after eating or drinking. Try to avoid baby wet nap things, those blue mats as some dogs won't differentiate that and carpet.

I had to do this w a rescue. We drove to a quiet street corner and did 15 minute increments. Have you seen Tom block the dogs visual ? You need to block the visual and practice Look and Down. And palm food in the face but identify the stimulus. Try not to touch the dog allow them to calm and adjust 'car' plam food in face w Look and redirect. This dog was 13 inches and a foster did drag the dog. I did use behavioral herbs and ended up using medicine which helped a lot

I would add one more, which I did recently by my stupidity 🤪: trying to train a dog after his/her breakfast 🙈 he was so ignorant, so I learned my lesson: dogs can be trained only with an empty stomach 😅

Thanks for the video, it was helpful. One question I have always had, why do some trainers have the dog on the left side? I live where there are many bike/pedestrian trails and it's very annoying when dogs are walked along the center line of the trail. Dangerous also when I am biking. Wouldn't it make more sense to keep dogs separated by walking them on the right side of a side walk or trail? -Thanks

How do you train dogs like beagles and other scent-driven dogs to come when called? I’ve noticed they are generally pretty difficult about recall, my dog being no exception.

In this video, under step #3, you state that we can save 100% on your course, essentially making your course free. Is that true? I have used your methods on my rotweiller with great success... just a couple of fine tuning on his leash training needed while on walks. Mainly dealing with distractions... people, dogs, squirrels. LOL I would love to learn more about what I need to do better for Buster. He trusts me, too. Thanks for all you do.

It is interesting how you compare a dog to a child. Children grow up and become adults and we have to stop commanding them as we both mature.Dogs also grow up and mature and yet we continue to treat them like children. Training needs to be progressive and we must accept the nuances and be cognisant of adulthood and maturity, dog or man.

I have an issue with my on lead break. I have a 4 year old intact male bullmastiff cross. We have had reactive issues and he doesn't like strangers touching him which I've accepted but my issue is if we are walking and he's done 5/10 minutes walking to heel (heel will do more) and I say break he goes mad. Like he has to smell all the smells and pee on everything in 0.1 second and he will bolt from one side to the other. I've tried shorter heel then breaks so working right back up from 30 seconds of each nothing works. Please help

We also see many older people with perfectly respectful relationships with their dogs each for the other. Obviously these relationships evolved long before the advent of KZbin dog experts/ trainers who “btw have been doing this for 10yrs” I guess he started in nappies. Many of these YT experts seem to be men. I wonder if this is only about power and domination over a dependent beast and perhaps these areas are lacking in their human relationships. After all it’s easy to control a creature who is completely dependent on you for food, water, shelter and freedom and it’s obvious if you yank the leash around its throat it’ll do as you want. These kids make my skin crawl.

I find all these issues first and foremost with my younger clients like Millennials and Gen Z. In these generations, there is a lot of "treat others as you want to be treated" and not enough of "treat others a THEY want to be treated" going on. But a dog simply doesn't feel well without a clear, hierachical structure, which Millennials and Gen Z apparently are not willing to provide because "that's so outdated".
