You could see those owners had tried really hard to sort things out and had some good skills in managing their dog. What a breakthrough with the ecollar. Having all the tools, an open mind, know how to use them.....success....and he looked a much happier dog. Nice for them all.

My dog used to be like this. Very reactive GSD. But with balanced training, prong collar, and now an e collar she is learning that she doesn't have to react. Of course she isn't perfect, and sometimes if the other dog we are passing by is reactive it is hard for my dog to ignore them. But she is SO much better now than a year ago.

I love the trial and error of what works the best for this dog not using a forced template on him. From what I've seen a lot of "dog trainers" try to use a general template on dogs that it doesn't necessarily work for that specific dog. Thank you for amazing love and respect for each and every dog that comes to you.

This is my dog!! only Koda is hyper-sensitive from 100ft away. It's taken me 2ys to get within 20 ft of a new dog. I have both prong collar and e-collar. When he starts to build sometimes a buzz is not enough to distract him. I have to use stimulation when we do happen to get close to another dog (when on walks). He now has 4 other dog friends thanks to what I've learned through your KZbin channel! (He is still reactive to any new dog)

I have always judged people who use prong collars or e collars but seeing your videos has changed my mind. My border collie puppy grew up and was so bonded with me so I never once had to punish her. She learned everything with positive reinforcement. Then I had a super reactive foster dog and 6 months of positive reinforcement and love did not create a balanced dog. He was adopted eventually and is still a handful. I have a new rescue coming in a few days and she is dog reactive so I am going to watch all your videos and try some of your balanced training methods. Thanks for all of this fantastic material!!!!!

Pro tip... turn your mic audio down to avoid clipping, (you can boost in post if its too quiet with next to no issues)... also put on a neutral density filter to limit the amount of light coming into the camera so you can lower the shutter speed to something close to a 180 degree shutter (for 24fps have a shutter of 48th or 50th/sec) . It will reduce all the choppiness of these videos . Love the content and the training style you have. I have a 1yr old GSD that needs some work with reactivity towards other dogs while on leash. Your videos have helped a lot

I walk dogs as a side job, and currently I am saving up money for an ecollar because of how versatile and good it is for reactivity. That is the number one thing I see with the dogs I walk, is dog reactivity. While I train them around dogs for months with the tools I have available, I just know an ecollar would work in weeks, especially on my more receptive dogs. Great video!

I just got a female pitbull who acts the same way.. I KNOW 100% she was never abused or hit at all, she just wasn't socialized properly at the right age and got too used to being in the middle of nowhere where it's dead quiet all the time. Now I've got her in an in-town area & she's just terrified of EVERYTHING 😢 it's only been two weeks though now & she's getting her confidence little by little each day! Just takes some time and work. Once they trust you & know all the new sounds and people won't hurt them, they start to come around

Mike, I agree it takes time. I contacted the guy we got her from a while ago and was told her parents are the same way. So...lesson learned, I shoukd have asked about the parents! I hope sometime they will post videos about a genetic disposition on dogs with fear. Until then, I am thrilled to report that today, for the first time EVER, she let a stranger (to her) touch her! I about passed out at the park when it happened. We are making progress!!!

I totally get how those owners feel but at the end of the day, Tom is the expert and no matter how hard we try to get our dogs to behave how we want to, we need to accept that some answers while simple and right in our face, don't come to us because we just don't know enough. For me, it actually says a lot about Tom's expertise for being able to quickly understand what the issue is and immediately get it handled. You want experts to get things handled quickly and not actually struggle with the animal they get.

This video helps so much to know I am not alone! My 1 1/2 year old GSD female is super reactive on the training field. Her reactivity started in January out of a fear event. She is great on walks and in public, but sitting idle waiting for her turn to train at our group training field is another story. She is a pup that is a great working partner-working on earning her 4th AKC title, but her reactivity is getting the best of me and I am not sure how to solve it. We use a pinch collar, high value treats, verbal commands, distraction by way of tug toy or telling her to do something so she is not sitting too long staring at the dogs around her and building, etc. When she is working on the field she can be right next to every dog and does not react at all. We even went in public with many of the same dogs she goes after on the field and she was perfect with them. I am at a loss as to how to stop the behavior. She has fired on a trainer here and there, especially when they come from behind and she gets startled. Is this a situation where the e collar would be our best bet? She does not resource guard at all and we can have people at the house, I just initially have her on the leash or in “place” when they come in.

I have a friendly dog who is fearful reactive on leash & all of this is so helpful I will be looking into these tools. The biggest problem I have that I can’t figure out how to manage is off leash dogs. There are so many off leash dogs in my area, even in places they are supposed to be in leash. we’ve encountered this situation many times, dogs that aren’t friendly that have come at my dog growling and the owners haven’t cared and I don’t know how to get out of the situation and how to give my dog guidance. I think it’s why she became reactive in the first place. What do I do when an off leash dogs come at us how do I react in that situation?

We recently purchased some citronella collars and they have worked wonders with our dachshund cross and gsd cross that love to bark at everything. Our dachshund barks constantly mainly during fetch when he doesn't get the toy and after one session he's much more quiet. Our gsd loved to bark at any sound from neighbouring dogs day or night and she is so much better now. Both had positive reinforcement for not reacting and are much better.

My dogs are super friendly and love playing with other dogs. However, when we are leash walking (as we have to do if we stay at my parents’ condo), they bark like crazy at other dogs and sometimes people. They’re not aggressive at all. So it helps when we bring the dogs to each other, because then it’s like they can say hello, but most other owners just give me dirty looks. This only happens when leash walking, or if we are in the house and they see someone walk by walking another dog. I feel like it’s never going to change, so this video gives me hope!

I appreciate your help with these videos and the quality!! Looks and sounds great. 👍🏼 My dog is also reactive to other dogs and sometimes if they bark at her first she doesn’t bark back but other times she waits till they get closer to bark and sometimes she’s just barking at faraway dogs as well. After our last walk around the park she was tired out and didn’t bark at the two dogs who barked at her first. For once i wasn’t embarrassed. We’re working on it though. Thanks to you!

I have a 7 year old gsd and she’s absolutely hates other dogs constant lunging and barks like crazy. Tried everything and she doesn’t learn! But she is very loyal and does all her commands when said, just can’t be around other dogs with her.

Can you come to PA and help my German Shepherd? 😥

I have 3 dogs. A gsd, a German rotty, and a Dutch shepherd/pit mix.. the dutchy is horrible on walks whenever he sees another dog. He was a rescue, abandoned by his breeder and left to die so I suspect there’s some trauma there. He is an incredible listener, sharp as a whip, calm yet protective with people, but an absolute monster with other dogs. I’ve tried everything, I’ve done so much research and I trained all my dogs but this issue I can’t seem to fix. It’s embarrassing and saddening because I want to help him.

Tom you are my hero!!! Your videos have helped me immensely, my (rescue)Shepherd mix is currently in board and train for low confidence and reactivity to humans and dogs. He wasn’t socialized as a puppy, and your videos have helped prior to the board and train and give me so much hope for my dog. Thank you so much for educating us. ❤️❤️❤️🦮👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Is Lakota a Dutch Shepherd and Hawk a Malinois? My friend and I are debating. Both beautiful dogs regardless.

OBIE *IS* MY DOG. She's a GSD who is anxious and feels she has to "protect" me on walks. She barks like a lunatic at other dogs as well as kids. As fate would have it, I have an E collar so I am *definitely* gonna do this.

This is exactly my dog. And i haven't been able to get him to stop or pay attention to me. I use an e collar now but i find all dogs we pass walking aren't neutral dogs so it's been so difficult trying to teach him otherwise.

I am from Switzerland - and I love to watch every video of yours. Video Idea: I would be interested in dogs you failed to change - dogs that then got killed because they were not bearable - you probably filmed it a bit. And then you may analyze it. By the way: Your technique you use here is called "Exposition therapy"

I’m a nervous and insure person. Last week we got a 14 week old all black German Shepard. I’ve been watching you channel to learn how to train her and build a relationship with her. The more I work with her I realize I don’t even know how to be in good relationships with people. Like I avoid them and conflict most of the time. So, trying to be her leader is hard. My question is Tom, can you make a video solely about the command “leave it”. I use this when she is barking at our sheep (she’s scared of them) or chewing on something or I just want to stop a behavior. Recently with chewing I’ll say ‘leave it’ she will slow down and look at my but keep doing it ( I get frustrated with her for not listening). Eventually I have to get her to come to me or physically take it away to stop the behavior. Is that okay? Or do I need to say it once firmly and keep saying it until she stops then reward her with praise “good leave it”! Or is it something different all together? Would be great if you made a video about this! How did you address this with your own dogs when they were little?

I’ve decided to give a e collar a try on my rescue Blue Heeler ( got him at 8 months but is 1.5 now) After getting him he kinda adopted the dogs ( around 10-12 all different breeds) he met as buddies but is really dog aggressive towards most new dogs but especially Huskies at my apartments dog park. Although he had no issue recently with 2 of his dog friends aka my neighbors first dogs, when they each got another, so it can be random at times. Around people and kids ( kids aren’t people 😉) he is great and very loving. Oh...he also hates golf carts, 🚴 and skateboards. His sister a rescued collie/Heeler mix i was easily able to train with proper manners/obedience and in excellent in agility courses with treats only ( I credit Stonnie Dennis videos)

I wish the vibrate worked for my dog. Unfortunately it just scares her, and then she wants to run home and hide :/ Our trainer wants to layer the prong collar with the mini educator to help get her used to stim at a lower level because she’s so sensitive but we wanted to try to do off leash training with her. Great job with this dog!

@@tomdavisofficial similar to this, focusing too much on other dogs/reactivity. Started off trying to snap her out of it with treats, she doesn’t care about treats in that situation. We’ve had some success with prong corrections but it’s not enjoyable to use prong corrections in front of people. What seems to work best at this point is keeping her in a heel on walks, a directional change if she’s focusing and correcting her if she isn’t heeling when I change direction.
