I am currently a fifth year Electrical Engineering Major, ( yes it can take that long for a BS in EE), and when I feel my back against the wall with 14 and 15 hour days, including long hours in the lab, preparation for presentations, heavy research for homework assignments, and of course studying for midterms and finals, I think back on my time in Nuclear Power School. Suddenly my life doesn't seem so bad. :)

This in no way conveys the full extent of the life of a Nuke. Especially not sub life. Your division will be between 9-15 people on a sub. As an EM1, I was constantly working. Most of my career was 60+ hours a week. You will have no life if something breaks. You stand duty every 3 days. This means that you are on the sub from 7:45am to 5pm the next day. Then you have a normal workday and the cycle repeats. Naval Reactors will constantly pressure the engine room. If your engine room falls from grace, may God have mercy on you. Also, this does not convey how intense the power school training is. My BS in Electrical Engineering I got after the Navy was easier than P-School.

Aight I watched this before I joined the navy and lemme run you through the pipeline now that I've finished: you go to boot camp, if you get through and you're not medically disqualified (one guy had a nuke contract and then he got to boot camp and was disqualified because somehow he passed a colorblind test but ended up being colorblind) then you go to nuke A school, its NOT 9-5 its more like 0530-1500 or 1630 (hours are pretty much the same for Power school) then in A school you have mandatory study hours and don't even get me started on A school homework (EMN btw) so you'll start on 4 hours and after a few weeks your SLPO will look at how you're doing and can give you reduced hours. If you make it through A school you go to power school, power school is more lenient when it comes to study hours (for example the electricians didn't have mandatory study hours every day you just had mandatory study hours for the week so if you did 7 hours over the week and you have a mandatory 12 for the week then you go in on the weekend and make up the 5 hours.) DO NOT SHORT YOUR HOURS OR YOU WILL GET SHAFTED in some way. (usually extra hours on top of your 12 hours) Power school isn't too bad, maybe for MMs cause their A school is only 3 months compared to EMs or ETs which is 6, but its not as bad. Once you get to Prototype you'll think "its gotta get easier from here" it doesn't, in my opinion prototype was a little harder just cause you have to study stuff on your own and then get signatures in your qualification and that's probably the hardest part. Prototype is 12 hour rotating shift work. once you're qualified in rate you go to the fleet, idk much about that yet cause im on my way there but thats the training pipeline in a nutshell. quick way to get masted or kicked out of the nuke pipeline or navy? 1) lying 2) drinking underage 3) drugs 4) just being a shitty person and being bad at your job. The pipeline is stressful but you're literally being paid to sit and study so at least perform better than the minimum needed to pass.

I am not out of the military and working in the corporate world. The Navy prepares you best for the civilian world. Next up is the Coast Guard, then Airforce. I don't meet many former Marines in the corporate world. Neither Army nor Marine training translates well when it comes to the corporate world. My Marine and Army friends all seem to be working as bus drivers, security guards and so forth. Nothing wrong with that type of work. It's just an observation ...

I am a Retired 24 Year US Navy Submariner. Yes, I was a "F'ing Nuke" in the parlance. I think the presentation was well done and some of the posted criticisms below are way off the mark and seem to originate with some males that seem threatened. The the video describes her off-time activities she describes the situation as not being too different from a regular 9 to 5 job. She takes crap below. IN PORT, we generally had the Duty Every Third Day. The other two days were off if on the weekend or 7:30 - 4:00 and then off. Have no misunderstanding, if something was broken or otherwise required additional people THAT TOOK PRECEDENCE. Being a F'ing Nuke is not for everyone, any more than being a Submariner is not for everyone! The young woman presented herself well and made a good pitch to help get more recruits. Did she paint a sometimes rosy picture? Yes. I have to wonder if some of the nonsense below would have been posted had she been a male!

It's an exceedingly hard job in the most stressful job field in the world that pays very little while you are in, so if you are disciplined with your money and get scholarships going to college or trade schools and starting your civilian career sooner is better in the long run, BUT if are not able to get many scholarships (ie. not as smart or disciplined) and you want to have them pay you for your education, get some experience as a technician, and THEN go civilian side (since that's where the money is for nukes), then you will find yourself with fast money (6 years being fast here), little to no debt, and on the path to early retirement. So, the somewhat longer, far less stressful path (with much less chance of being masted for stupidity on your part or your buddy's.) go civilian and plan ahead. If instead you want almost all of you work and stress in life frontloaded into 6 years so the rest of your life can be much easier (assuming you don't get roped into a 2nd sea tour), then go nuke. Unfortunately, this is as much as I can write right now as I need to answer the demands of my own choices on the matter.

I was in the Nuclear Navy from 82 till 91, I have been in the Civilian Nuclear world since 92, (10 Frigging months unemployed... my ultimate shame). For the Past 26 years I have been in the Civilian Nuclear Power World. The first thing... Dramatically bigger plants...When you get hired as an ex Navy Nuke OR an Operator from another Civilian Plant... It is dramatically easier for you to qualify. About a year ago.. One of the Nubs on our Crew graduated from his University with a Masters Degree in Nuclear Physics... (Good Guy).... he went through all the usual phases we all went through when we became Nukes in the Navy or the Civilian world...He was MAN enough to admit..."My most Humbling Point in my Life was when I started working as an Operator at our Plant" He expected the Navy Guys To be Moron Knuckle Dragging Low Foreheads...(that is what the University taught). Instead he was shocked at the Knowledge level and Difficulty of being an Operator in a Nuclear Power Plant. (He is a Great Operator now.!, Welcome Aboard!).

I was a Navy ET for 6 years. She is telling the truth. The nuke program is top notch. You will work with some of the smartest people in the military. Actually just about all Navy schools will drop you if you don't cut it. It's a honor to make it thru an A school. So yes, you can quit school but nobody likes quitters. If you get dropped or quit, it's up to the Navy where they place you. Nuke school is hard, hard, hard so be ready. I am talking physics, electronics, chemistry

Depending on how long you are pulling into a port you are lucky if you get to spend 1/2 the time exploring and such as the rest of the boat. 4. Being a nuke is the hardest thing I have ever done and parts of it suck so bad that you will wonder why on god's green earth did you ever agree to do it. But when I got out after my 6 years (as a nuke ET) I got job offers starting at $31/hr with no prior experience. So as much as it sucks, its almost impossible to find something that will set you up for a better future.

Navy Nuke ET (Class 9836T; last A-school class in Orlando) - did Power School in Charleston (then a brand new facility), and NPTU in Ballston Spa (S8G). Then four years at sea on CVN-71. It's funny seeing videos like this surface these days, back when I joined there was nothing like this to even give me a hint at what I was getting myself into.

I understand that ODU in Norfolk has a great program that allows credit transfer. I went there and got my BSME after I got out. Great job, sailor!

The nuke field actually is the only one i know where you can quit the pipeline at any time. All you have to do is tell them you're stressed out. I can't remember how many people i knew who got out of it and just re-rated or went undesignated for that very reason.

I joined the Navy in 1974 (Yes, we used slide rules). At that time, if you signed a nuke contract at enlistment there was only a 3% chance (that's 3 out of 100 for the mathematically challenged) that you would make it through all the schools and qualify on a submarine. You lose a few in boot camp (Orlando, Fl), a bunch more at "A" school (Great Lakes, Il.), a whole bunch more at Nuclear Power School (I went to Mare Island, Ca.), and a bunch more at prototype training (A1W in the Arco, Idaho desert). I spent a total of 8 years in the service and spent a tour on two subs, USS Gato (SSN615)(Shellback)(SubQual)(Reactor Operator)(EngineeringWatchSupervisor) and USS Jacksonville (SSN699)(EDTPO)(RO)(EWS)(Plankowner)(RCLPO). There will be very little time off. On those rare occasions when you are in port, you will be on duty 24 hours, followed by a regular work day, followed by another regular work day. The only time off you will have is if your duty day is on a Friday and you are able to be off Saturday and Sunday. If there is any major evolutions going on, you will work 7 day a week shiftwork. The only satisfaction you have being a Navy nuke is knowing that you are better than anyone else.

@ Danley144, Actually going the the US naval academy will NOT give you the skills or the specialty. The graduates of the US naval academy who decide on nuclear power as their specialty MUST also undergo the rigors of Naval Nuclear Power School and Prototype once approved to pursue that specialty. I graduated from the naval nuclear pipeline as a Reactor operator ( read Nuke ET). class 9304

Sean Morin This is correct. I just signed my Nuke contract and didn't have to take the qualifying test. I'm guessing the minimum ASVAB score to waive the NAPT changes with the needs of the Navy (depending on how many people they are looking to recruit for nuclear). But I believe my recruiter told me the minimum ASVAB to skip the NAPT was 90 or 92.

I have a historical question about Nuclear Rates. When I served, there were 3 nuclear rates. MM, EM, and ET. However, were there ever Navy Nuclear IC'men back in the 1970's? ie. Were there ever "Internal Communications" Nuclear Engineers?

To chrlbrwn2, yes she is a REAL MM, in fact i met her as a recruiter earlier in 2011 for a brief before came. Yes, i agree, not an 8 hour work day, especially if you are hard working. For some, barely getting by gets you nice off time, or for those with amazing learning skills can have a shorter day as well. I'm usually home after 12 hours, on normal days, and anywhere up to 15-18 hours on typical prior to examination days. I'm an EM3 3 weeks from graduating at NNPTC Power School.

They try to touch the reactor controls and the Nukes have to tell them to go back to their paperwork. Enlisted get to do this job because it is technical. Lol, this video never really lies... but it doesn't say the whole truth. Just be wary of things that sound too good, and be ready to roll with the punches. Listen to what people tell you to do, but still think for yourself! Start off well, and it's not hard to maintain your momentum. Likewise, if you're a turd at the beginning, don't be surprised when you get flushed. And know that the six years of hate you build up will disappear that day you finally separate :)

Many colleges with nuclear engineering/nuclear engineering technology degrees give credit for it. And nuclear school has 3 segments, each one lasting 6 months each (except for MMs, who have 2 segments of 6 months, and one of 3 months). And NNPTC students do anyone from 12-15 hours of school a day, 5 days a week for this entire time. Do the math and realize how much more work that they do than college students.

Oh for advice on the training pipeline, don't be lazy, put in the effort, don't be afraid to sacrifice a big portion of your weekend, don't screw over your class/roommates, oh and excellent physical condition will get you PT vols, which in turn, gives you more study time => shorter day. I don't think the curriculum is that difficult, its the extra non-academic work that amplifies the difficulty. BUT, my chief (EMC) instructor, breaks 6 figures out at sea soooo.... yeah

Well, being an astrophysicist must not be too mentally challenging if anyone can do it. Not many people want to be or can be USN Nukes. It still has the highest ASVAB score requirement out of any job in any branch of the U.S. military. I'm not going to go out and say that the ASVAB is hard, but I'm not going to say that Nuke School has up to 40% attrition rate because people find it too easy.

I was a "Nuke" when I enlisted as a MM in 1964. I soon came to the realization that I was nieve. I know of many guys who were smart enough to differentiate between the recruiters BS and reality.

One: Anyone else notice the obviously missing tongue piercing that was getting in the way of her talking? Two: She is not a real nuke mechanic, surface nuke mechanics only do half, if not less, that what is available to you on submarines. Way to Nuke it out Choice989, I'm glad that you can count, but the enlistment mentioned is only taking into consideration the active duty status. If anyone has questions about Nuke school feel free to send me messages. I am an ET3, been in the Navy for well over a year and I am currently in Power school which is the 2nd of 3 training phases once you arrive to NNPTC.

18 months, now? They must be taking it more seriously. When I went through, I did about 8 months in ET A and C schools, then 6 months in classroom and 6 months in prototype, so the nuke part of it was 12 months. It was interesting, and more hours crammed into a shorter span than college, but I would say nothing above the 200 level college classes. Best of luck to you.

I hope you get this message before it is too late. If you aren't prepared to teach yourself don't do it. Also there is "A" school, power school, and prototype. You will be there for the longest 18 months of your entire life. Unless you live and breath in a classroom that is.

Hahahahahaha good pitch. There is no time off when you are on a sub. in port you might get lucky and get 3 section duty. if you are an ELT, good luck with that. The navy will destroy you trust me, if you want a normal life working 40 hours a week you are looking in the wrong place.. Also, nuke school is great but when you finish youre in serious trouble. Please dont let these imposters fool you ive been through this.

You can request ET, or EM, or MM... but in the end it's the "needs of the Navy" roulette wheel that determines where you go... I have perfect on the ET and EM sections of my ASVAB, and missed 1 on the MM section... I requested ET, EM & MM in that order, and got MM...

Just curious, are ET and/or EM more desirable then MM? My son is considering enlisting, and scored 99 on ASVAB, and recruiter is telling him the only two jobs he can get are either the nuclear program or Crypto Tech.

The recruiter is not "entirely" truthful... (Keep in mind, his/her job is to tell you what you want to hear, to get you to enlist, and fill critical needs in the Navy) I got a 93 on the ASVAB, and I was told I could have ANY rating (provided there was openings in that field) I wanted, from the most menial up to Nuclear or Crypto Tech (which now includes Language Interpreter) I got perfect on the ASVAB sections that deal with Electronics and Electrician, and I missed ONE question on the Mechanical section... I placed my preferences as ET, EM then MM (in that order)... the "Needs of the Navy" made me an MM... I was also top 10% in MM School, which was a separate school AFTER Boot camp, BEFORE Nuc School when I served... (I believe that the Nuclear "A" schools are now integrated with the actual Nuc School now) I joined in 1984, so your son's "mileage may vary"... I also only got a 58 (out of 80) on the Nuclear "Pre-test" (which may not exist any more, I don't know) (you needed at least a 48 to get into the Nuclear program, and if you got at least a 68, you went to an "abbreviated" 3 week long Math and Physics "boot camp" between "A" School and Power School, otherwise with a 48-67 on the test you went to a 6 week Math and Physics "boot camp"... This "boot camp" was 6-8 hours a day of lecture on Math (from Algebra 1 up to Pre-Calculus) and Physics topics plus a guaranteed minimum of 2-4 hours a day of "homework", 5 days a week... It fries brains... it's like being fed from a fire hose... Even this material was considered "classified information" and was not to be taken from the Nuc School building, so you did your homework in the building, not in your barracks room... (this was when Nuc School was in Orlando, FL; again, it might be different in Goose Creek, SC). Also, no matter what the recruiters say about fantastic amounts of College Credit for all this Math, Physics, and Nuclear Theory... my college gave me NOTHING, because the Navy declared it "Classified

What college gives you credit for classes in nuke school? Nuke school is cram and jam, very specialized and narrowly focused. How does a six month course get you half way to a BS degree? This sounds overly optimistic to me. Anyway, good luck. You may need it.

@LaVitaMusic8557 2 questions: what was ur asvab? are u getting an enlistment bonus? nuclear field require a high asvab in the areas of math, physics and chemistry, also with recent economy issues a lot of rates are not getting bonuses or are getting smaller bonuses, if u are a nuke good luck, its a pain in the ass for 2 years, if not, conventional mechanics are some of the coolest guys on my sub, but every one of them is bat shit crazy, i'm a nuke EM btw

Hi just looking at this video since I'm becoming a nuke. Nowadays nukes have a $38,000 sign on bonus plus I'm getting $14,000 right after boot camp for shipping early. I'm also starting as an E3 going into boot camp. Everybody said nuclear is hard but I got a 95% on the asvab and took physics, Chem, and calc in high school. I was told by a nuke that it's not hard since they give u all the materials u need. Was wondering what your experience was and if u have any advice. Thank you!
