Amex offers are the key. Everything else being equal, a good Amex offer on a restaurant or any merchant can boost its value beyond the annual fee. The problem for most is the barrier of entry of a high annual fee even with the credits.
@tylerpartin3676 Жыл бұрын
I get what he’s saying but if people who are tighter and don’t spend as much were wondering….. You only have to spend $520 a month or $6,200 a year in restaurants or groceries getting the 4x points to break even on the annual fee and that’s if you don’t buy anything else for travel, etc, or use the credits. So that helped me see if I would break even or earn somethin. Hope that helps someone.
@SolidLiquidFox2 жыл бұрын
Anyone using the Schwab cash out method at this stage of the game needs to evaluate the Citi quadfecta. MR points should be used for aspirational travel. That's the only way the annual fees make sense especially on the Platinum. The Gold card in its current form is the best Amex card. The $250 AF is the sweet spot for 4X if you are looking to generate lots of MR points along with a BBP for general spend. The moment they raise the AF on the gold you'll see lots of people move on because of the physiological barrier of spending too much on fees. Regardless of credits or coupons that they may add.
@KR-oo5xn2 жыл бұрын
Many MR points hoarders overlook how difficult is to redeem MR points for aspirational travel. Try to get 2 "saver" business tickets to any attractive destination on any partner airlines - it's impossible. If you find 1 way, there is no return, or crazy connections offered making it useless. It became totally impossible now post-Covid when many airlines do not allocate enough seats for redemptions or do not have advanced schedules in place to book award flights at the earliest possibility.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
The two main reasons I tell people to not get the Amex Gold card are if they can't get value from the credits naturally and if they don't want to use their points for travel. Of course, there are more reasons you should avoid it as you mentioned here, but there are also a ton of reasons to get it, so you just have to weight the pros and cons for yourself. Great video Sebby! 👑

The gold card really is my workhorse card. Restaurants and Groceries. Add in the Uber Eats and Dining Credit and it is only a $10 card and that is before the coupon book offers all year long. A few fav restaurants end up being 6X with offers. On top of that I tend to move my gold card points to Hilton when they have a high transfer bonus so in effect I get 9.6-12X Hilton points from using the gold card. Far higher than my Aspire card earns for non-Hilton expenses. Even at .06 cents each, that is 5.7 - 7.2 per dollar spent on the gold card and I tend to get Hilton redemptions at not .06 each but .099 each this year. I couple this with a couple platinum cards, the Aspire card, and a few more Marriott cards. My latest Diamond Status experience in Santa Barbara, California was spectacular and it was all points and certificates and sitting looking out on the ocean. 👑 Johnny-O

Same! It’s my workhorse card and has been since 2019. Credits are a tad annoying to have to use but it’s not hard. I set a monthly reminder to use both credits and I always eat out on the weekends so I’ll just get food via Grubhub and Uber eats and do it that way. For a net $10 AF card this is a heavy hitting point earning card. As long as you’ll play the annoying game of using the monthly credits, easy decision to use the Amex gold daily. Nice job on your redemptions with your MR points!

👑 Where the Gold Card really comes into its own is if you can Maximize all of the credits AND you carry a corporate card. I personally value the Gold’s credits at 50%, based on my situation, including the hassle of remembering to use them each month. This year I got the Citi Premier, with its 3x on groceries and gas. Being a single person household, the extra 1x (4x v. 3x) the Gold gives, doesn’t cover the extra annual fee cost, in my personal card value calculation. *My calculation doesn’t even factor in that when my Chase Freedoms have a 5x quarterly gas or groceries category, I use those cards for gas or groceries, and buy some gas or groceries gift cards to use outside of those elevated quarters. I have platinum and gold. Still learning how to maximize having both cards to warrant the fees.

I currently have a 3 card set up, the Blue Cash Preferred, Chase Freedom Unlimited and the Costco Visa Card. Works pretty well and my thought behind it was I can always get the Gold Card at a later date when I see myself spending more on food when either I get a girlfriend or family, as I am single right now. So for my spending habits, it just makes sense for me to get the Gold later. I dont travel too much other than 2ish times a year at most domestically, so it doesnt make sense, but I am open to it in the future and maybe by then AMEX would have refreshed or updated the card with better perks or benefits. If not, I might look at the Capital One Venture X as my first high end card

I love the Costco card.

The big thing pulling me towards this card is the 3x points on booking direct with airlines. Are there any other cards that offer that??

Love the Gold. My largest expense every month is food so getting points is very easy.

I really don't get the arguments against Amex Gold: you either eat out (diner), or you cook (groceries). Both of which you get 4X reward from the Gold. What's not to like? And besides, air travel is prob your next biggest expense anyway, which this card also covers.

👑 I currently have a gold delta Skymiles card. I am looking into getting the gold card but I like the online shopping credits with Blue Cash Everyday Card. Not sure which one I want to look into getting in the future.

👑 - I did read a post on Doctor of Credit not too long about AMEX sending out a survey to Business Gold users about a potential increase in the annual fee ($295 to $350). When I read the fine print, one of the potential changes floated was additions to the 4x categories for rideshares. Wonder if that could be the case for the personal Gold

It's really hard for me to use the Dining Credit and I suspect that's true for a lot of people, Uber/Uber eats are mainly usable. I suspect I won't renew past the first year because of this.

Appreciate the realistic analysis! I think a lot of people overhype #4 and CPP. It's not for everyone.

👑 Can you do a video on good end game cards to go after? I’m at 4/24 and I’ve been sitting here just applying for business cards instead lol. Also for the gold card the perks overall are good. I just wish I had a shake shack and Cheesecake Factory that were closer to me. It’s a bit out of the way to use that $10 credit so sometimes I’ll just do a pick up order for Grubhub instead.

👑 I didn't do enough research before getting the gold. I spend time out of the country and expected the uber credits and restaurant points to work...... they didn't. Uber credits are in USD but not foreign currencies. It's not worth it for me currently

Just canceled my Amex Gold last week - kept it one year. This card is weak compared to the Amex EveryDay Preferred and Amex Green, both of which are FAR superior cards overall, have no gimmicky and useless credits, and have the best multipliers for regular spending for almost any credit card combo for less money than the Amex Gold alone. Those are my Amex keeper cards. I just got the Delta Platinum, and get a lot more value out of $250 on that card. I liked the rose gold metal, but that's about it. The dining credits were fun for the first four months, and then after that it got really old. 👑

I spend a lot at restaurants and on groceries. My platinum is essentially grounded unless I'm traveling.

If you're spending $3k on dining get the Platinum (yes, the Platinum, not the Gold) through the Resy offer. Right now it's 125k + 10x on dining (yes, 10x) for the first 6mo. Get that, _then_ get the Gold after 6mo.
@boogeymanw96432 жыл бұрын
but then you would pay the $650 without having a chance of using all the credits if you are not plan on traveling for the next 6 months. ALso having a card that short and cancel is not an idea tho. Also too short of a period for retention offers.

Can I combine my Uber eat credits from plat and gold onto one Uber account?

👑Well all I can say is oops too late. I just got my gold card in the mail this past Tuesday. I do use the monthly dining benefits because I allow myself to get takeout once or twice a month. I occasionally use Uber, but I'll have to use it as Uber Eats to make up for the slack.

👑 I do not like the changes they made a few years back on the Gold Amex. I do not use Uber or Uber eats. $10/month credit at certain dining establishments is tiresome, I forget to use it at times, I wish they would roll over. I would rather have the annual pre-check or airline credit return to the benefits. I feel like it’s a waste of my annual fee.

I've definetely loved my Gold card, but I'm in Year 2 now and will have to see how it does. The credits are honestly pretty useless to me, so I'm just in it for the 4x on dining & groceries. I've been able to get a couple good redemptions with it, but not sure how long it will take to rack up those points now that I'm in Year 2
