For Amiga heads who still play this on their real machines, you can use the Sega controllers (or anything with two independent buttons) with this game and fire with button 1 and attach/detach "The Force" with button 2. I'm shocked that people found this difficult. I used to storm through this on one credit and without cheating. You just have to memorise the patterns. The arcade machine with the DIP switches on hard, that's tough! R-Type II for the Amiga, that was insanely difficult.

I only ever played the Turbografx version, but that port is soul crushing. I have no idea how you would even begin to beat that game without savestates, let alone on the default two continues.

Wally Beben really did the best job with the music conversion for the ST - while the Amiga may have had the more advanced soundchip, the ST music in this game just seems to bounce along better, despite the less sophisticated chip.

A good adaptation from the machine, the background was of course combined and the animation was simplified, but in general it is very good and the music on the computer is even more contrast..On a 377kb machine on an Amiga 635kb, but considering the capabilities of the computer, this is a typical port! 1987....!!!!!!!

Great conversion of the arcade. I remember playing this back in the day and really enjoying it. It's also a better conversion than the X68000 port despite the 68000 being more powerful - there was terrible slow down in that version. (I'm also looking at you Super R-Type on snes lol) Oh yeah and the music is great. Was really enjoying the title screen music that the arcade didn't have, and then I noticed that it was composed by Chris Hueslbeck - No wonder it was awesome :) Btw I know the obvious choice for best Chris Huelsbeck music is the Turrican Soundtracks, but for me I prefer his Apidya music. That soundtrack was epic, heartfelt and had some awesome 90's dance music to rival Yuzo Koshiro's Streets of Rage tracks on the Genesis :)

Id love to correct people who think they know something but in reality what they represent is spreading false information. Amiga has hardware suport for parallax scrolling. It is called Dual Playfield mode. Thanx to other hardware capabilities Amiga games can even have 4 independent playfields like in the game AGONY. I guess you didnt have Amiga hence your knowledge about it is poor.

Well, the competition with ATARI ST has its sideffect where multiplatform games were downgraded to lower spec computer then ported to Amiga with small or even none enhancements. R-type is such example. There are some games which were programmed directly for amiga and those can shine. Check this website. We were talking about possibility on paralax on Amiga and if you cant understand what you are reading then i Wonder what you did in the school... You are right thought X68000 was superior to Amiga. The problemm was you couldnt buy it or software to it. One last thing SEGA GENESIS was just console, Amiga was far more than that. There were the time where all TV studios used it.

Ahh, I see. Yes, that would explain it. I've seen the Amiga when used to its full potential (those Shadow of the Beast backgrounds for instance) so this rather disappointing conversion took me aback a bit.

@@robertwilson3866 I still think the Amiga could have a better version of R-Type. But back then they had to work with the 512 kb RAM limitation and they were still learning about the Amiga Hardware You just have to see what the same team of developers achieved with Turrican 2 a few years later.

disagree: even r-type1 is actually quite different to the ST version. -the ST didn't have backgrounds, used OR rendereing (color-clash..) instead of propper masking and preshifted sprites in 4 pixel increments - the amiga version does appear to use hardware scrolling and blitter, and hardware sprites for the player's craft and force and yes r-type2 also used sprites for a paralax background

I love the Amiga but I was very surprised of how much better even the hu-card versions of the TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine is compared to sound and graphics, it came out at around the same time, not to mention the CD versions of both the PCE and TG-16. I mean Shadow of the beast was amazing for the Amiga and compares nicely to the cd versions of the TG-16 and PCE versions (except for the cut scenes)

@MattTheSpratt I'm forced to agree and I'm an Amiga die-hard who loved this game. Compared to the arcade original and considering the talent of the Rainbow Arts/Factor 5 programmers, it's a disappointing conversion. Far from dreadful but falls short. The magazines back then got carried & away hyped this as being a flawless translation. There's loads of enemies and features missing and yet they're all in the PC Engine/TurboGrafx version and that was far less powerful than an unexpanded A500!

Whoa...! What the...? This is really not using the Amiga's power at all, is it? No parallax scrolling on the stars, black background instead of the parallax mecha landscape inside the base... and the music is okay but hardly at the level of the arcade or the iconic C64. Speaking of which, even the C64 version had the proper parallax and whatnot... The Sega Master System version had a tiny tiny fraction of the Amiga's processing power, yet still has the backgrounds and parallax stars, etc...

I always wondered why they left out the background in the second part of the first level and the level edges on level 3. It's not like they would have required any more processing power to do. The other levels prove that it could have easily been done.

Always asked this one myself. My theory is, that they lacked the colors to do that, since they only used a 16 color palette. It's weird though. With some copper tricks, they could have done wonders.

That's part of the reason and the other part is that we only had 3 month development time which made it impossible to do conversion as good we'd loved to.

Didn't Rainbow Arts get sued because Katakis was a direct rip-off or R-Type...then they had to get them to do the port as the in-house version was so awful?

It's not that hard actually. The amiga version is lots easier to beat than the original arcade, the bosses in particular are far less tough. Still an excellent port, each element of the original is there, I'm particularly surprised at how accurately level 1, 5 and 6 were adapted.

@turbografx Yes, but a X68000 wasn't a computer you could buy for a mere 500 Dollars/Euros, And this port isn't perfect NOT because the Amiga isn't powerful But the Amiga can't do a perfect port because it differs in hardware, the X68000 is identical to the arcade machine therefor much closer, And Stardust shows that Amiga kicks ass ! >:) (is there a game that rivals it ? on the X68?)

This was a rush job. I think Factor 5 were up against the clock to get this out on time and it shows. Other than the title track, the sound is awful. I'd say it's inferior to the c64 soundtrack which is much rockier than the arcade!

PC-Engine version was released on two(!) cartridges which you had to buy separately. First four levels on Cartridge One, last four levels on Cartridge Two.

Which amiga? there were different amigas at that time. I own a amiga that kicks the x68000 ass FUN FACT Until more powerful systems came along a amiga actually animated some of the CGI in star trek the next generation. I would like to see a x68000 do that.
