Damn, man, this is seriously impressive. Anyone can spend decades developing expert slight of hand and expert-level effects that only a very skilled niche of people can pull off, but what you did is actually a higher achievement. Not only did you create a profound effect, but the effect you created is extremely elegant, it practically does itself, and anybody can master it very quickly. *Simplicity is the cornerstone of brilliance* . It's easier for an expert to do expert-level stuff than it is for an anyone to generate methods that experts _and novices alike_ can master with such ease. Exceptional.
@KingstonCzajkowski2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the creator of this channel didn't create this effect. Oil and Water is a classic. It doesn't make it any less impressive - just know that it was originally developed by Ed Marlo.

Like you, I was surprised that no one had ever thought of something so simple before. Unlike you, I am very proud to claim it for my own, however! LOL! There is one subtlety you can add for this. When the cards are being pulled apart, there is a little sound of them sliding as they are pulled into different piles. What we can do is after spreading, take the blacks and reds in separate hands and strike them off each other to show the spectator while making the same sound as sliding apart. Thus, the sound is registered in the spectators head and they wont get suspicious when they hear it again.
@parkourandfreerunning42143 жыл бұрын
Sorry what do you mean? When do we do the strike? Do you mean when we show them the three cards red and three black cards, do we spread/ push over one card at the time with our left hand to our right hand while making the sliding sound, then squaring all 6 cards up and then showing the six cards again then do card switch and then do same thing when there are 8 cards?
@guzmas312 жыл бұрын
This is very important. I could notice the move from the initial performance and I believe it was because the sound hinted that to me the first time. Also, doing the same move three times makes it more likely that someone would catch it, so I wouldn't do it again.

this is awesome. I actually had a thought regarding presentation. the spectator might get suspicious by the added movement of "checking the cards" to make sure they're good on the second go around. it might be smoother to do it for the first time as well, even if there's no sleight of hand, just for consistency! also instead of checking the cards, what if you blew on them for...maaagiiiccc purposes lol. thanks for the great trick!

@AMillionCardTricks5 жыл бұрын
Don’t worry, that just means you need to practice the timing of the switch more. You were probably doing it too early, therefore he caught the switch. My advice is to do it quickly, but only switch the cards when the cards line up with the spectator’s eyes. In that short moment when they only see the edges of the cards, that’s when you do the switch!

First off, this is cool as hell. I'm happy to assume you found this out. Well done Secondly, I had an idea for this that might add a little more story and fun to it Do the 6 card part normally. Then when you do the 8 card part, point out how you're sort of adding more water and oil. Then when you come to the part before showing them, just actually show them the cards with 1 red and 1 black out of place, and say something like "hmm it must need a little more time to separate since we added more water and oil", and then you can do another card trick or something while you're waiting for it to "separate" then come back and finish.

Thank you for my first Oil & Water trick. Very very cool and novice-graspable sleights, though personally I prefer the six-card presentation to the eight-card one, as the 'checking the separation' part at the end puts me off. But bro the six-card version is sweet as honey and I now have learned, practiced and added it to my repertoire. Thank you so very much, You rock! Oh - and instead of only showing the middle cards, I show every one of them that comes up in the right spot whilst just casually tossing the others onto the pile. By the time I'm done, it totally seems as if those cards have been alternating - if that makes any sense, 😆. You and MLT are my faves!

I’ve been wading through Marlo’s version from The Cardician, and my eyes popped out when I saw how easy this can be. The trade off is in sacrificing the convincer of showing or pretending to show *each* card as you mix them. For that you do need more complexity. But after seeing this it seems like the law of diminishing returns kicks in when you start adding more.

@@magicbyspaz I checked out your version. The surprise ending was good, but you don't have a how-to for your version.
@tanm.nguyen73192 жыл бұрын
@@magicbyspaz But in your 6 card version you can't let your audiences examine the deck after the act and you must keep the "blacks" in your right hand when alternating (which is more suspicious than putting all of them on the table first)
@magicbyspaz2 жыл бұрын
@@tanm.nguyen7319 Please don't say things that are not true. I always let anyone who wants to inspect ALL the cards, do so. I actually encourage the spectators pick up all the cards and examine them, and they usually do. Yes ALL the cards. Furthermore all the cards are on the table and face up, and remain face up while being shown going down one at a time, so where does the suspect aspect you claim, come into play? What you said, makes no sense because no one has any reason to suspect anything under those conditions. Again, please don't say things that aren't true
@magicbyspaz2 жыл бұрын
@@tanm.nguyen7319 Actually I replied to you for making blatantly false statements. I actually did reply to him and he isn't the one trying to turn this into a pissing contest. He simply said I don't have a tutorial for how I did the version I do. Let's get a few things straight: First of all I do put all the cards on the table first then pick them up. So what are you going on about the trick would be harderif the cards were on the table first? Secondly: You keep trying to say what I use cannot be examined while ignoring that you've been told multiple times now that all the cards in the version I do, are in fact given to the spectator to examine. The spectator is also always encouraged by me to pick them ALL up and examine ALL the cards, which they they usually do. Third Your version cannot be cleaner because you fail to reveal a card while it is face down. What you fail to understand is that it is irrelevant if you have all the cards on the table, you do not show all the cards faces before you put them face down, which you do not do. Finally on top of that I use one hand to put the card face down after showing it making it even more convincing. If you seriously believe that me not only showing all the cards faces before putting them down, but also placing them face down out of one hand, then you say the spectator can't examine things when they can is suspect and not convincing, then you are delusional. Here is a reality check for you. Fact is not showing all cards before putting them face down is and always has been a major flaw in oil and water. Once again stop saying things that aren't true such as what I use cannot be examined. They can and are.

The most amazing performance of this trick I've ever seen was about 30 years ago on a TV special; magician Rene` Lavand, who had lost the use of one hand when he was a child. He didn't let that stop him from learning or developing his own methods of performing slight of [literally] hand. And so, on that program, using only one hand, he did "Oil and Water". His performance can be found on You Tube under the title "It Can't Be Done Any Slower".
