The Amish attitude of using technology wisely and respectful of others is a lesson for rest of us to practice also. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I see electric bicycles are widely used in Holmes county Ohio because the terrain would be difficult without the electric assist.

Great information! I've often wondered about my neighbors' use of the cell phone. I'm one county away from Lancaster.

Im English but live in the Midwest near a large group of old order Amish with stricter more traditional lives/rules. It is interesting to hear how diverse the Amish culture is.

Sure thing - the one this is excerpted from is already up on the Patreon (Ben & Erik Show Episode #1) so you should be able to view it here: www.patreon.com/posts/ben-erik-show-1-98683382. This will probably be the last excerpt from that episode though, then on to #2 😁

Love both of your commentary, however things in upstate NY are polar opposites than in Lancaster.

Well noted and thank you. And as Ben and the vid description suggest, your results may vary.

I enjoy your videos and Old Pappy is funny. I have an interesting question for you. In our little order up here in Northern Michigan a young Amish couple were expecting their first child when the Mother started having problems. I drove them to one of our larger Hospitals where they took the baby very early in the pregnancy to save both lives. The baby was less then 3 pounds and is expected to be in the hospital for what could be several months. The Order up here is very small and the Bill could be well over $500,000. Have you seen these things before and just how do they pay for it.
@kimfleury8 ай бұрын
There was an an Amish woman who needed a lung transplant, which not only her community paid for, but Amish around the US, and non-Amish as well. She didn't survive, sadly, but the bill was rightfully owed, and they had pledged to pay it, so they did. It was more than $1 million.

Wow… this is new! As the son of an old order Amish bishop, I heard of churches like Lancaster, and Nappanee that were more democratic in their process. My father was from Buchanan county Iowa and was much more dictatorial; he called those churches “ist barely Amish” 😂 Good info thank you 🙏

I always enjoy your videos, Erik. As I was watching you and "Pappy" 😊 I was wondering if you ever did a video on why Amish men don't have mustaches. That is something that I've always been curious about.

Thanks!! If I'm not mistaken, I think we did touch on this in the latest conversation we did. I haven't gotten to putting out clips from that one yet though. But if not, I might try to ask Ben in a future talk.

So Fascinating. I live in Amish America, some great people to live around but very strange rules, especially the button pants, hilarious.
@kimfleury8 ай бұрын
Button pants now? That's modern! Pants used to be fastened with drawstrings! At one time the Amish weren't permitted to use buttons. I read a children's story when I was around 9 years old, about an Amish girl of the same age. She asked her father why the Plain People weren't allowed to use buttons, as she had seen her English classmates wear buttoned clothing in school. Her father probably didn't know why, so he told her that the devil hangs onto people by the buttons. The history is that in the 1700s, and earlier, buttons were fabricated out of precious jewels and metals, and were actually used as money. The wealthy liked to flaunt buttons. So the Amish of the time rejected buttons, and eventually forgot why, because buttons became mass-produced out of cheap materials, and were no longer used as currency.

In the end, the bishops are behind the excommunication. If the bishops all refused to excommunicate, then everyone would become free. However, that will not happen as long as the majority of Amish are the stricter Amish who believe that you could end up in hell upon excommunication.

The Amish are getting scared that they are becoming exposed negatively on the Internet. It looks like they decided to hop on here to try and protect themselves. I was born and raised Amish, and this is typical Amish behavior. Usually they have non-Amish inviting/aiding them in the process.

Haha. Don't know where you got the idea that they don't use the Internet. Interesting how the idea is almost borderline racist.

Mark 7:7-8 (KJV) 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, [as] the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
