This song was a favorite of my grandfather, Abraham Lehman. He taught Sunday School in German for over 50 years at the First Menonite Church, Berne, Indiana. He was the most godly man I have known. After listening to the lyrics you have heard all you need to be saved. Repent of your sin and ask Jesus to save you. He said He would if you truly believe and ask. I am now 81 years old and soon will see him again in Heaven ( after I see Jesus).

During the covid pandemic my brother who is down syndrome was being admitted to hospital. However he wasn't cooperating with the nurses who wanted to hook him up to an IV. His care giver was reaching out to the family for help. As none of his siblings were allowed to go to the hospital, I recorded a voice message and sent it to his care giver so that it could be played back to my brother. I asked him to cooperate with the nurses and I also sang this song to him. (As a child I remember my parents singing it to him often, when he needed comforting) When he heard my voice he cooperated with the nurses and had said, that's my brother on the phone It brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. And so does this song What an incredible message. God is love!

Definitely not an Amish song, but perhaps sung by Amish people. This old hymn is well known by German speaking people, especially in the US. Well known and sung by Lutherans, Reforemed, Baptists, and Mennonites, especially those who had come from Russia, it is probably the all time number one favorite German hymn,. When we had Amish tour the Hutterite Colony, they would ask if the school children sing? We would say, we will sing if you join us. The Amish would always say, "We don't know the same songs." We would then say, Gott is Die Liebe. Now the Hutterites sing that way slower than the Mennonites but the Amish sing it way slower even than the Hutterites do.
@sfdint5 жыл бұрын
It's not really an Amish song. It's common among Christians of German and Swiss descent. I grew up Mennonite in northern Indiana and our entire congregation of 400 souls often sang this song from memory, the last vestige of our German language background.
@blacksand424 жыл бұрын
Hm-m-m-m.....I probably grew up no more than an hour's drive from you in Indiana. I attended an anabaptist church, sort of a combination of Amish and Mennonite and "other". I'm Swiss on both sides, followed by immigration to France, and a few to Germany. I don't recall ever hearing this song, but I do recognize the unique "sound" of the music from the German hymnbbooks.

Four grandparents all spoke fluent German. I regret that I did not even attempt to learn it, but I can "get by" in French. Still have GGF German hymnal, printed in Switzerland.
