The Amish wedding I attended around 10 years ago was held in their barn. The bride told my lady friend and me not to come until 11-1130 so we wouldn’t have to sit so long but it still it lasted until nearly 1. They had 2 nice lawn chairs for us to sit in the back of the barn. We were invited to both the lunch and supper. We also got to watch them open their gifts outside. It was in June. When we got my car parked out came one of the bride’s brothers to show us where to go for the wedding. We were the only English ladies there for the ceremony. I felt so honored. I’m hoping as an Amish Uber that I’ll be asked to attend a few more weddings.

Being an English guy, I have been to many Amish weddings. I was very close to one family (still am) But when their last daughter got married. I was part of the cook staff (More like food transport, Truck,) I have my Amish suit, but i got to wear the colored shirt like others. That was one of those 1200 people wedding.

This takes me down memory lane! Amish weddings are fun, but I always had fun with my family (the only Amish weddings I've been to). I think the Belle / party crashers were always my favorite. They always added some excitement to the night. I always loved the dry ice punch too, it looked so cool. And of course as a kid, we all loved the candy bars. The Amish make the best pie too, my grandmas did in particular. At one of my cousin's weddings when I was in my twenties, they asked us English cousins if we wanted to get go outside and line up to eat with someone and I remember we all opted out bc we thought it would be awkward lol. I think you're right, it would be better for them if they just lined up and whoever you matched up with would be who you eat with would be better. My aunt said she always felt sorry for the girls who go chosen last. It sounded like it was often the same girls. Another aunt said the whole dating thing was a lot of pressure, if you didn't have a date every weekend, you felt like a loser.

Well! That was fascinating! My tummy got full just listening to the day's activities! I live down the road from a very large Mennonite community and just found your channel, which I subbed to. The folks around here always talk about how rich the Mennonites are because of all the farmland they own and work. Lumber mills, sod farms and so on. Can you do a video on the wealth of the Amish and Mennonites? I'm curious as to what they do with their fortunes since they do not purchase big ticket items like cars and fancy houses. I'd enjoy a video about that. Thanks!

Whew!! After all of the wedding activities, I'm tired and full of food..it is a lot of work for all involved, but they do weddings so often that it is an organized activity..the more you do, the better and easier it is..the now married couple usually help with cleanup the next morning, in most cases...some married couples take time (the honeymoon) and visit those older relatives who couldn't travel to the wedding, mostly those out of state relatives. I don't know if I missed this being said, but all Amish married within the church have to be baptized (I'm sure you've said it in previous videos)...all in all, it would be a wonderful experience to attend an Amish wedding. Thanks, CJ, for your personal insight of Amish weddings..looking forward to the next video..have a blessed weekend❣

We are definitely not as organized, nor do we have matching colour coordinated dresses, but this sounds a lot like my gigantic French Canadian family reunions! I always loved spending the day in the kitchen cooking with my aunties, great aunties and Grand-maman! I live amongst the Old Order Amish community in SE Minnesota. I wish they weren't so standoffish. Don't get me wrong - they are friendly enough - they wave at me all the time as they ride by in their buggies, but I'd love to talk with them....I have questions. And the children in their Sunday best - cutest kids I ever laid eyes on! I love to buy their baked and canned goods in the summertime! I bought a pecan pie once from Mary and my God, it was the best pecan pie I ever ate! My dad drove 2 hours for Mary's blackberry jam. He couldn't get enough! My aunt drove 3 hours and bought a bunch of baked goods from Mary and to this day my aunt thinks the Amish put something "addictive" in their food to keep people coming back! She wasn't serious - at least I hope she wasn't! I know why Amish food is so good - because they use *_real_* ingredients....real butter, real whole milk, real whipped cream, real potatoes, etc. Not instant potatoes, not margarine, not CoolWhip and none of the fat-free milk, which is just cloudy water. They use *the good stuff!*

I believe they are a super strict community so that might be why they are more stand offish. I interviewed Lizzie Hershberger who, if I’m not mistaken, comes from there.

Hello! I love your videos, thanks so much for taking the time to explain the Amish ways. I’m originally from the Caribbean so I find Amish culture very interesting as so many other people. I moved to Waterloo, Iowa (in the middle of winter) in January! Not a good time to move but oh well…. And I LOVE that I’m only about 40 minutes away from the Amish community in Hazleton, Iowa. I’ve found out that the ladies are very nice and love to chat. Someone said they love to waive when you drive by them but I feel silly waiving and then finding out that that someone was just playing a joke on me. Anyway, my question about the wedding is, where do they get all the porcelain plates from? Does the community keep them all for weddings? That’s a whole lot of plates!

I think the 3 days of rest and prayer after the wedding would be very helpful to the bride (and groom too) to have the space and time to physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually rest and recover from that intense pre-wedding planning and that extraordinary day and to process all that bigness of the wedding. Need to calm the nervous system and get settled in to being married and together in a new way before adding the big new layer of physical intimacy into the mix. Sounds really wise rather than rushing into something that is so new and can be quite awakening of all new sensations and awkwardness and fun.

Quick point, most of the time if you are wanting a specific date for your wedding, the cook wagon and refrigerator trailer need to be ordered a year ahead at least. If you are good with whatever date you can usually get them 6mnths in advance

I grew up in a non Amish farm community in Indiana in the 1960’s-70’s. There was a tradition perpetrated by the older folks called “Chivaree” where friends and relatives of the bride and groom, soon after the wedding or return from their honeymoon, would quietly show up at the couple’s house or residence after dark with pots and pans and various other noisy objects and proceed to “serenade” the newlyweds with a great din of noise and shouting. I don’t think it is done any longer, since all of he old timers have passed on.

What I would have loved as wedding gifts even though I am far from Amish lol. But my family though my ideas of wedding gifts were crazy. 300 acres of Land, 2 horses, 4 cows and a bull, 6 sheepand a ram, 20 chickens and 1 rooster, seed for crops, fruit and nut trees, Farming tools, cast iron cookware, Mason jars, lids, rings, canners, canning supplies, shelves for a pantry, quilts, sewing supplies, cotton and linen fabrics in solid colors, wood burning cookstovecwith oven, gardening leather gloves and gardening tools, a pulley long clothes line, a smoke house... practical things or the money for them.. Lol Having grandparents who saw the times before and survived raising 9 children in the great depression in Idaho made it where I saw great value in those type of things. Yet, my parents and rest of the family saw those things as going backwards in how society was heading. Looking at how things are now they see that what I wanted had more sustainable value. Too bad I never got most of those things.

I'm not Amish but my family says I eat too much I actually consume so much food that its probably not good for me to be eating as much in one setting as I do LOL. I actually got to point where I ate so much red meat during each meal over the course of my life that my triglycerides are at 400. Which is actually pretty dangerous so I wouldn't generalize people by how much they eat honestly because even non-amish people can eat a lot as well it just depends on the individual person.
